Wow, you lot have been so helpful. Thanks ever so much. This list of games will keep us busy for some time.

Turns out Kirby's Return to Dreamland is called Kirby's Adventure Wii in the UK. I wondered why I couldn't find a PAL copy anywhere, and now I know.

Well based on what my niece liked and had the patience for when she was that age I reckon:

  • Wii Sports Club
  • Nintendo Land
  • New SMB U
  • Smash Bros
  • Super Mario 3D World (might be a stretch but it's fantastic so it's worth a spin)

Six is a pretty great age to be playing games with a kid. When they're a tad younger they don't really get it and they don't have the hand/eye coordination. When they're a little bit older they'll be really excited about everything which is good but it also means they'll start pestering you to play their games.

Don't forget all the Lego games. Find one for the movies you enjoy, including the Wii ones. They don't get much respect from serious gamers, but I've had great fun with my kid.

  • Super Mario 3D World : You really have to look in to this Mario game specially for couch co-op, it's just something else. This game was made for multiplayer and I'd even go on to say that this game on single player is not the same experience.
  • New Super Mario Bros U: I don't know if you guys ( U & ur son) played the New Super Mario Bros on the Wii, if you guys did you can skip this, but still it's a different experience in HD.It's still Loads of fun.
  • Nintendoland : This is a No brainer, you have to get it it is so much fun, and in this your wife can join too.Well...her sister, your brother, and everyone else can join too ^_^ It's fun trust me.
  • Rayman Legends : I don't know the level of experience of you and your son, cuz this is a lil' difficult game but trust me it's awesome. One taking charge of the environment in the game and the other player getting the job done.
  • Lego Batman 3 : This is going to be a awesome for you and your son no matter what age or gaming experince.
  • Lego Marvel Supperheroes : Same can be said about this game too, this is the better game in two and also has an open world, sort of. It's loads of fun.Try It.
  • Wii Sports Club : You guys can have a blast with motion implemented sports games. It contains Bowling,Tennis,Boxing,Baseball and Golf.

That's all I can think of for now, If any other awesome game comes to my I'll update this post. Cheers

I'd like to big up Game & Wario some more. There's only a few multiplayer titles on it, but they're pretty good. The drawing one, which is like Pictionary, gets a lot of traction in my house. Wii Party U also has a lot of stuff going on with virtual board games and mini-games - even two-player table top ones that don't use the TV at all. Wii Fit U as someone else mentioned has some fun games that have an exercise component, though you'll need to take turns.

Pikmin 3 May prove a bit challenging depending on how well-developed hand-eye coordination is: the boss battles involve a lot of moving and targeting at the same time; I find remote and Nunchuk more accessible in that one. This is a single player game, but there are co-op missions and competitive modes for two players.

Lego City is great, but single player only.

It's also worth diving into the Wii catalogue: Wii Play Motion and Wii Sports Resort has some fun multiplayer stuff happening too.

I reckon Kirby's Epic Yarn is the main game I'd go back to if I wanted to do some co-op with a six year old. Everything else in the Wii's library that I reckon rates in that regard is trumped by Wii U experiences. Rhythm Heaven maybe being one of the exceptions, Wii Sports Resort as another purely because it has a broader collection of games than Wii Sports Club has.

The only stuff in the Wii's library I usually suggest people who missed it revisit is the more single player focused stuff. So unless you think collecting star-bits is something you think is worth it for co-op (and it might well be) then I'd stick with Wii U titles.

Unless I missed it I'm surprised no one mentioned Hyrule Warriors. Its a little bit more on the violent side but it's not over the top blood and Gore that's for sure. My son is 7 and I think we will start up some Hyrule Warriors really soon.

Also it's been mentioned but me and my son have got throat miles out of Pikmin 3. I can say without a doubt we have no less then 100 hours playing multiplayer together on that.

Of course all the 2d side scrollers are great as well which have also been mentioned.

Does Wii Sports Resort require a Motion Plus controller? We have three Wii Remotes, but only two have Motion Plus (One is a Wii Remote Plus controller, while the other has the attachment).

Yes it does. I actually just picked up an extra attachment like 4 weeks ago from Gamestop for like 10$

Wii Play Motion includes a red Remote Plus, so if you can track one of those down that's a nice way to pick up an extra one. A lot of the games are remote-only and are more accessible to younger players.

Or use this as an excuse to pick up those special Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi remotes!

If you like Wii Party, I highly recommend the sequel, Wii Party U. It has more games, it comes with a free Wii Remote and is overall so much fun

I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

I'm from the UK. The local game shop sells the Motion Plus attachment for £6.99. I managed to get a pink second hand Wii Remote Plus for £9.99 the other day, which my fiance is chuffed with.

If you are looking for extra controllers like the special character-themed ones, the official Nintendo UK online store is cheaper than retail or Amazon. If you're thinking of buying download versions of retail games GAME online is often 5-10 quid cheaper than the eShop price and you get your codes within seconds.

Happy gaming!

Kirby's Epic Yarn is a really easy game and should be easy to find for about $15. Kirby's Return to Dreamland runs about $50 used in the US.

The Lego games are the way to go for pure co-op fun. Lord of the Rings was the most open world fun for us but Lego Marvel the most colorful - though it constanlty froze my Wii U almost every other time we played. Lego Batman 2 is supposed to be one of the best, we're getting that next week.

If you and your son just want to help each other out Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are probably some of the best games on Wii. Not actually co-op, just picking up gems and shooting them at goombas, but still great games.

And of course if you want to spend obscene amounts of money on toys the Skylanders games are great. My wife and I played thru Giants together and had a lot of fun. We've tried Disney Infinity 1.0 and Marvel 2.0 and the building aspect is neat but you have to want to build more than play. Our 2 amiibo sit mostly untouched.

The best co-op part of Nintnedo Land is easily Pikmin. We play that 4 player w/ my wife, 2 kids and I. Zelda is ok on rails but Metroid is a bit difficult, Pikmin is just fun.

If you and your son just want to fight each other and destroy things there's always Godzilla: Unleashed on Wii. I didn't like it as much as the Gamecube version but it's still fun, and Godzilla.

Boom Blox and Boom Blox: Bash Party (both Wii games) are great games - the 2nd has more variety w/ shooting and other puzzles. Can probably find those really cheap used.

If your kid like sports Mario Super Sluggers is a much better baseball game than Wii sports, though the RPG lite sotryline to unlock everything is single player only, and Super Strikers Charged is a fun soccer game. Mario Sports Mix has a fun dodgeball game but baskeball adn volleyal were just ok. Nintendo really needs to get some Mario sports games on Wii U.

Someday we'll find it
The rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
