I bought my six year old son a Wii U for Christmas, and he loves it. He's got a few multiplayer games for it such as Mario Kart 8, Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, Wii Party (The Wii one, not U), and Rabbids Land. He likes playing games with myself and his mother, but we're not sure which other Wii or Wii U games to get which we could enjoy together. What games do you recommend which have good multiplayer and are suitable for a child.
Kirby's Dream Land 3, Kirby Returns To Dream Land, and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric are some Wii/Wii U/VC games I'd recommend that have multiplayer. All 3 of these games have a multiplayer co-op than can be played throughout the whole game.

Thanks for your response. My son has always wanted a Kirby game, so those games would be perfect. Which of those Kirby games is better, or which would be better to play first?
My son is 5, quite smart, and an accomplished gamer for someone his age. He loves playing all these games with me or his mom. His sister is 3 and she enjoys watching/mashing a controller as well.
Anyway, can't go wrong with just about any of these and don't buy dumbed-down games with the idea that they are easier for kids. Give him real games that you all enjoy and you will be amazed at his progress and ability.
Wii U: Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, MK8, Nintendoland, Super Smash Bros., NSBMU, Game & Wario, DK:TF (tough game, have him ride on your back and shoot peanuts when encountering trouble), Rayman Legends, Scribblenauts Unlimited,
Wii: Kirby Return to Dreamland, Kirby Epic Yarn, NSMBWii, Mario Sports Mix, Boom Blox,
I'd also highly recommend switching off on Zelda Wind Waker, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, LEGO City Undercover, and The Wonderful 101 (this one only if you are game).
...Gotta run, this is off the top of my head, but I'll be back later to edit with a more comprehensive list.

Kirby Return to Dreamland for Wii might be one of the best kids co-op games of all time, but it's also one of the harder Wii games to find at a decent price. 100% worth it though, I've never seen a group of kids who didn't become enamored with this game.
My 4 year old nephew loves playing New Super Mario Bros U with me when his mum brings him over.
Mario maker and 90's arcade racer are due out at some point, so you might want to keep your eye out for those.
Oh, forgot about Nintendoland. He has that as well, but we have yet to play it. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll look in to Kirby and Mario 3D World. I'll also check out the other games in time.
I prefer KDL3 to KRTDL, but KRTDL is much easier for someone who's younger.

It's infamous among the Mario Party fan base, but I really like it. You only need a Wii Remote too play it.

Check out Pikmin 3 too, it is an enriching experience with wonderful symbolism. It will teach him about life and ecosystems in charming ways few games have accomplished. Also great for teaching cooperative teamwork. (My son uses the Wiimote and his had-eye coordination has improved incredibly as a result of pointing with that controller. Great for kids' development. The touchscreen is good as well.)
Scribblenauts is also something special. Wordplay, exploration, puzzles, creation, a charming world... It has it all and is likewise a wonderful choice to enrich their gaming.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is one of the better spectator co-op games you'll find. Excellent for problem-solving and spatial management. Blissful game. Hard to believe this wouldn't be a complete hit, though your wife may insist on manning the controller...
Finally, SSB will whip your little one into an ace gamer faster than just about any other game out there, provided you understand the mechanics enough to teach him. Kids love SSB.
3D World is the easiest no brainer around though. Very solid chance it will catch your wife's interest as well. Start there.
Pikmin 3 doesn't really support multiplayer (I'd still recommend it), though, and the multiplayer in 3D World is really clunky. If you own NSMBU, I recommend skipping out on 3D World. Smash Bros is multiplayer... but considering your child is 6, I'm not sure you'd want to get that one just yet. If you're going to get a Smash game, though, I'd recommend Brawl over SSBU, if you're fine with the ESRB rating.

Mission mode might be the best part of Pikmin 3 and that is co-op, but the rest of the game serves spectator co-op well. My son cannot get enough of the Christmas bonus mission, working together to collect fruit and beat our high score doesn't get old.
Multi in SM3DW is near pitch perfect. My wife and kids demand to play it nearly every cganxe they get and we beat it a year ago. Skipping that would be lunacy, especially if you want to involve your wife. Kids do love the NSBM series though (the Wii version may bea better option).
SSB is the manifestation of nearly everything kids love about gaming... Just think about it. (The ERSB is no issue to me because kids roughhousing is a part of growing up and SSB never elevates beyond that... Now when I go to the park and witness a bunch of 6-10 year-olds enacting Assassin's Creed with sticks... That's where the ERSB's advice should be followed.)
Well, in my opinion, I found the multiplayer in SM3DW to be really clunky. I was dying left and right just because of the multiplayer camera. I personally didn't like the game, though, so I might be biased. I also forgot about the mission mode in Pikmin 3, but considering that there's only a handful of levels in mission mode (without the DLC), I'm not sure.

If the 6-year old can play co-op, the 6-year can play the Bingo Battle in Pikmin 3. And Bingo Battle is easy to balance for uneven players (when I play with my son, I give him 25 start pikmins, and I get 1 or 5).
Jumping on quick to mention that I asked my wife and she encouraged me to recommend Wii Fit U. Wii Fit U is like a great arcade experience wrapped around physical activities. With plenty of excellent minigames, it's a legit a gem for the family.
The only consideration is the need for a balance board and Wiimotes, but if you want to play family games on the Wii U, you should really have several Wiimotes anyway.
