Topic: Most valuable Wii U games?

Wii U will definitely be a collector console. Give it 10 years.

Idk about rare games that aren't good, but I can give some suggestions for rare games that are good (if it's not a good game worth playing, it's not worth collecting imo).

Darksiders (late release, Switch was already on the market, low sales expectations)
Darksiders II (launch release, sold out within first year, never reprinted)
Wii Sports Club (the golf is excellent, game was never reprinted)
New Super Luigi U (special physical release of the expansion)
NSMBU + NSLU (combo disc might be one to watch)
Bayonetta 1/2 (sold out and reprinted without first game)
Devil's Third (extremely low print run, was a decent game)
Tokyo Mirage Sessions (late release, niche audience, get the LE if you can)
Wonderful 101 (low sales, never reprinted)
Watch Dogs (low sales)
Splinter Cell Blacklist (extremely low sales, and exceptionally good game)

There's plenty more. Thats just a start

The argument that eBay eradicates high prices nowadays doesn't seem to hold up in my experience.

A lot more 3DS' have been sold than Wii Us, but no one is selling a physical PAL copy of Etrian Odyssey Millennium Girl for less than about £45, and I've never seen Fatal Frame (PAL) going on high numbers or cheap prices.

Whether there's emulation or not in the future, they'll always be demand for original physical copies once a few years have passed.

Gamecube games don't sell for decent prices because there's no VC, it's because people want the original case and media.

Unopened consoles, especially Zelda, but maybe MK8. Unopened Twilight Princess. Possibly in the future- unopened Nintendo titles like Smash, MK8, 3d world, Yoshi, NSMBU (and Luigu) and Mario Party with Amiibo. Unopened Amiibo might have a value in the future, but the packaging will have to be intact- no creases or fading. Oh and then there's a few games that have collector's editions- Wind Waker, Xenoblade and Bayonetta maybe?

The ones that are scarce now are artificially jacked up in price- I doubt Hello Kitty, Funky Barn or Wii Sports U are going to command higher prices and might even come down in value later. Or IF somehow they do have a "book value" at that level, good luck finding a buyer.

I think Breath of the Wild is pretty much the most expensive Wii U game.

Definitely doesn't. But why would it? If you have 1 game that 50 people are fighting over, how much of an effect is ebay gonna have on that. People don't just play a game and then immediately resell it. Especially when it's a really valuable game. Most want to hang onto it.
The effect of ebay in that example is probably something like turning that 50 people into 47 people. Ergo almost no change in price.
It's also probably true that ebay adds to the demand as well as the supply. Before ebay, a lot of people wouldn't have even bothered trying to get hold of one of the few Wii versions of Xenoblade. They'd have seen that almost nowhere has one and just give up.

It's the unreleased copy of Project Giant Robot I stole from Nintendo HQ.

@Octane I'm thinking more rare as the years go by, rather than its monetary value.

Whatever you do don't sell your Wii U stuff, give it ten years and you'll have a little gold mine.

It is a Nintendo Product that did not sell well but still had good games. Seems like as good a scenario as there ever was for future demand. I have a feeling anything that uses the GamePad as a primary feature will see value over the years. Low sales, but good game. But 2017 is very different from 1995. Very few people bought games specifically for collecting back in the 80's or 90's. If so. I would have kept every NES game box in perfect condition. So the landscape is very different. I say prices go down before they go up. Wii Sports Club was getting $100, now it is about $50. It might be decades before values are really high. You might be buying them for your children's children history lesson.

Any game that sold more Digital downloads than physical disc. And Even though it will not be rare per se, I think Zelda BoTW will always command a higher price, maybe not super high, but higher because of how good a game it is.
I wonder how games that got really good updates will fair when a time comes when the data on the disc is all that is available. Most older games had no DLC or patches. The game on the cart was all there was.

@KevTastic84 get it while it's cheap. I actually loved the collection.

Bayonetta 2Pack is already like $50-60 used. That price will inflate

Maybe RODEO Sky Soldier Wii/WiiU pack will become super expensive. Loved that game btw

@Samus7Killer I have the Starfox First Print Edition. I feel its underrated. Just needs time getting used to. Patience isn't what it used to be with gamers these days.

I think you can add those to games that are more limited to find:

  • Mass Effect 3 Special Edition
  • Call of Duty Black Ops II
  • Call of Duty Ghosts
  • TANK! TANK! TANK!
  • Mario & Sonic

The first three you could never download in the eShop, just like the Skylanders games, they were retail-only.
And TANK! TANK! TANK! and Mario & Sonic got recently pulled from the eShop as well. You can't download them anymore and need to find the retail versions.

Nintendo became very conservative with its manufacturing runs during the Wii U era, so a lot of these games went extinct quickly. Super Luigi Bros., Mario and Sonic at the Rio Olympics, Wii Sports Club and Pikmin 3 are examples of games that vanished quickly. I collect because I want to play the games, so I buy whatever interests me before it disappears. Whether you're in my camp or collecting for profit, I recommend buying whatever Wii U stuff you want now, because it will be scarce later.

Of greater concern to me is the GamePad. Ten, 15 years from now, if your GamePad breaks, it won't be easy to find a replacement.

Here's the question though, in this digital age are any games "rare"? I know for collectors there's a certain level of panic about download servers going offline etc. But between the ability to download games, the likelyhood of Wii U games being ported and Nintendo's history with re-selling content? Most of these games will still be available one way or another.

Sure, maybe the Wii U two disc pack of Bayonetta 1 & 2 may be hard to find in 10 years. What I wonder is whether or not there'll be much demand for it if in ten years time you also have:
1. A new generation of "retro gamers" who grew up with digital content
2. The Wii U download servers still online
3. A port of the game on Switch
4. A "Virtual Console" version of the game on whatever comes after the Switch
5. PC emulators that can do a decent job of Wii U emulation

It just seems to me like a gamble that won't pay off. The factors that made some NES games and SNES games worth a fair amount just simply aren't there for the Wii U. And for those older systems it took decades for some of those games to be worth a few hundred, maybe a few thousand. Unless you have some not-for-retail Wii U stuff I wouldn't bank on anything becoming valuable.
