Topic: Monster Hunter Tri or Ultimate?

I couldn't find any recent topic regarding this question, and reviews don't go in detail about the differences. Anyway, I have never played a Monster Hunter game, but I've heard a lot about it and I'd like to try it out. I don't own a 3DS, so I'm not talking about 4. My main question is, what is the difference between the two? Is it worth paying over double for the Ultimate version? I've looked up comparison videos, and visually speaking, the original looks just fine to me.

One of the best aspects of Monster Hunter is the online part, which is removed in Tri. So for that reason alone I'd go for Ultimate, which also has a lot more content.

I've read it before, but as I have no knowledge about the game, I don't know what the majority of it means. Perhaps I wasn't clear, but I'd like to know the experience of people with both of the games, how much better, or worse, was the Ultimate version compared to the original?

Personally, I'd be playing the game offline anyway, so I don't really care for the online multiplayer. Is there a lot of new content? Or is it reused content with a few tweaks to make it seem new? That's a feeling I got from reading about it.

There is a lot more content in Ultimate compared to tri. New monsters, a new area and much more. If you are able to play the game online, you really should. Online is where the game really shines and where most of the quests are. Even still, the singleplayer mode should last over 100 hours for a first time player.

No I wouldn't call it a few tweaks. There are new Monsters added, new weapons, new areas. Also for single player you have 2 amusing "minions" who side with you on quests, which helps a lot. In Tri you have just one.

As for introducing you in the Monster Hunter world and customization, Ultimate is better.

The double price of Ultimate is justified by the fact that it offers about twice the amount of content. 3 times actually, now that the online servers for Tri are closed down.
I own both games. Since the closing of the servers, Tri consists only of low rank*. The only reason I some times play Tri is because my favorite weapon - the longsword - got nerfed, so I occasionally play Tri just to have fun with the longsword. MH3U consists of low and high rank (offline) and an additional G-rank in online mode. Furthermore, you can access G-rank without going online, which makes the game future-safe. There are new monsters, new weapon types, and a new slime element which is really fun to use and is perfect for beginners (in that it can be used on ALL monsters and is generally the most powerful option anyway).
Don't do it for the visuals, do it for the 3x more content.

(*) Ranks are practically like easy, medium and hard. You need to finish them in order, and each rank introduces new monsters. With higher ranks you can also make stronger weapons and armor.

Thank you for your opinions. I guess I'll go with Ultimate then, perhaps I'll get them both eventually if I can get into the game.

No point getting Tri if you get Ultimate as Ultimate contains all of the content in Tri and then some.

Ultimate is the same as Tri, but it has even more content, and it has multiplayer. the servers for Tri went down in favor of Ultimate.

Blue blue.

Tri Was very bare bones compared to the Monster Hunters before it, Ultimate adds a ton of content which puts it on par with the other portable releases.

The Gamepad alone improves the experience greatly and even if you only play offline, someday you may run into someone with a 3DS and MH3U (or buy them for your gal). On that day, you'll be very happy you went with Ultimate.

Ultimate. There is no reason tri would be preferred. Both accessibility, longevity, content and pretty much everything make ultimate more than just an upgraded tri. It really is a better game in every regard, even considering tri was already awesome.
