Not only does my computer have a BluRay drive (a crappy one that glitches up frequently...), but I also have a BluRay player. And I use it quite a lot, since my TV doesn't have cable/whatever hooked up to it. Have plenty of anime/shows/movies on DVD/Bluray for me to watch constantly. Besides, I could still play one of my Wii U games and watch something on the TV at the same time, so HAH.

It's no news that the Wii U doesn't play DVDs, why did you just assume it does?.
People this generation especially gamers think because one company does it the others have to. I honestly wish I knew where that thinking came from. I wonder if those people walk into a Burger King and complain that they don't have Big Macs.

@Samurai_Goroh: I would assume that the lack of DVD license only applies to the Windows Media Player. But I was surprised to just see that they are trying to sell a DVD app for 14,99. LOL! I wonder if anyone buys that when there are great and established freeware alternatives out there (like the aforementioned VLC player, which became a de-facto standard a long time ago). ^^

Complaining for complaining's sake, that's all it really is. I imagine the 'logic' behind this is that "I don't have a DVD player, but some game consoles have them! But I only have Nintendo consoles — why don't they have players tooooo?"
Essentially blaming Nintendo for your problems (which one could easily fix by buying a player for far cheaper than an NX), and expecting NX to solve it for you.
@FriedSquid That too. It's that feeling of entitlement. My friend has a PS4 and it has X, Y, and Z. I wanted a Wii U because it's Nintendo but it should be like a PS because I want my cake and eat it too.

yeah I know it has Netflix but there really isn't that many good things on Netflix.
Surprised no one has tackled this yet.
I'm pretty selective when it comes to what kinds of movies/shows I'm interested in, yet I always find a movie to watch every week on Netflix, and regularly have a show I'm following as well (in the 3 or so years I've been watching it, I've yet to even go back and watch something I've already watched before).
A Tip, go to instantwatcher.com at the start of each month, and they'll have a detailed list of every movie/show that they got at the start of the month (they sporadically get things all the time, but they get most of their acquisitions at the start of the month). There you'll also be able to see what will be expiring soon, as well as some of the more high profile things they will be getting soon.

Burger King did have Big Macs. They were called Big Kings or something and it was their version of a Big Mac.
@Rexcalibr Ok fine then go complain at Wendy's that they don't have Big Macs. Point being just cause one company does something doesn't mean others have to.

There are better things at Wendys to get than Big Macs. Jr. Bacon cheeseburger for one, and I don't care. There is no good reason why any console in 2016 doesn't have a DVD player. Nintendo makes some off the wall decisions, like no voice chat ever, no ranking system in most games (why in Splatoon it's ok but not in Smash Bros)?
I will give Nintendo a pass though for putting all the Koopalings in the new Paper Mario game and they're all really cute and peppy.
On Windows I just install VLC player and everything works fine
I'm pretty sure the way VLC does it isn't technically legal. Someone cracked the DRM and VLC has ridden on that. Not that any of the people who would get paid really mind that much. If you have a drive you've technically already paid the licence. If you have the disk you're not an issue for them.

Why don't most Blu-Ray players have ranking systems? There's no good reason why a BR player in 2016 doesn't have them, when the Wii U does.
Nice logic. It's standard these days for gaming consoles to have a DVD player and it would help Nintendo actually look credible against Microsoft and Sony. It's not like anyone would be complaining if Nintendo DID have a dvd player.
Also, there should be a way to watch Netflix on your Wii U without having it play on the gamepad. Makes no sense that it needs to play on the gamepad as well as your TV.
Well I'm sure nobody would be complaining if DVD players had ranking systems either (except you), but you get my point. I'm only pointing out the irony in your logic (whining that a specific device doesn't have a feature that it wasn't built for), since you can't seem to understand the fact that there are, indeed, good reasons as to why the Wii U doesn't have a DVD player and no good reasons to complain that it doesn't.
But I'm pretty sure this thread lacked any sense of logic since the beginning. Can we go back to talking about fast food restaurants?

The PC I built for myself a few years ago doesn't have an optical drive. It doesn't have a WiFi card either as it happens. Actually it doesn't even have bluetooth come to think of it. And thinking about it more, I have a HDD in it but I don't really need that either. I have enough external storage for what I need and the flash it has internally is big enough for the OS and a few other things.
Ok, so I have an external DVD drive that I've had for quite a while. One I could use if I really needed it. I have used if for ripping a few CDs and DVDs on occasion. But TBH I don't really need it. I haven't used it for quite a while. I certainly haven't used it to play movies or music directly from the drive. I also have a fairly decent collection of Blu-Rays and have looked at maybe getting an external Blu-Ray drive. But it's hard to justify. I'd never really watch a Blu-Ray on my PC. I barely watch all the DVD's I've ripped. If I want to watch a movie? It's either a Blu-Ray on my TV or it's Netflix.
And you know what? If I can't find a reason to have these things on my PC? I find it even harder to find a reason why I'd care about it on the Wii U. I wouldn't. I didn't. I don't.

@Rexcalibr your right. Nintendo needs to start charging us all for using their servers just like Sony and Microsoft. I'm so glad you made me see the light.
I was surprised when they first announced it. I knew Nintendo wouldn't go Blu-Ray, but no DVD was surprising. The wifi on it sucks too. I have a large house so maybe I'm to blame for that.
It's your WiFi not the Wii U, I can almost guarantee that. Also technically it does have a Blu-Ray drive in it because that's effectively what the Wii U's game disks are. Just as the Wii used DVDs which the Wii U can also read. They're not exactly the same but the underlying tech is.
The reason it doesn't play back those disks? Licencing fees. They would have had to bump up the price (or reduce the margin) to pay for it. And here's the million dollar question. Why do you need it? If you have a collection of Blu-Rays or DVDs surely you already have a player. Why do you need another? Especially in this age of Netflix and similar movie streaming services.
Well my wifi is fine for my Xbox One and laptops, just my Wii U hiccups while streaming. I do have other players, but I would rather have one system hooked up in my family room instead of multiples. I don't like the young ones using my XB1 because of content where the Wii U stays fairly safe.
