Seriously lol @ Nintendo, that makes no sense. Even X-Box 360 can play DVDs, and yeah I know it has Netflix but there really isn't that many good things on Netflix.
I was surprised when they first announced it. I knew Nintendo wouldn't go Blu-Ray, but no DVD was surprising. The wifi on it sucks too. I have a large house so maybe I'm to blame for that.
I was only thinking about this this morning and how Nintendo when the NX arrives will finally have an excuse not to be able to perform such a simple and commonplace feature. I still anticipate seeing messages on screen saying this video requires a flash player. It is stupid and annoying that you pay more and get less with Nintendo. They scrimp and cut corners all the time passing on some additional expenses to us like buying a proper battery for the gamepad or having to buy a decent hard drive(32GB's was a disgrace). And in a lot of cases there is no solution to problems unless you use a different device. It's a joke that I'm seeing ads for PS4/XB1 on TV all the time cheaper than a Wii U, are more powerful than a Wii U in every way and have more functionality.

It's your WiFi not the Wii U, I can almost guarantee that. Also technically it does have a Blu-Ray drive in it because that's effectively what the Wii U's game disks are. Just as the Wii used DVDs which the Wii U can also read. They're not exactly the same but the underlying tech is.
The reason it doesn't play back those disks? Licencing fees. They would have had to bump up the price (or reduce the margin) to pay for it. And here's the million dollar question. Why do you need it? If you have a collection of Blu-Rays or DVDs surely you already have a player. Why do you need another? Especially in this age of Netflix and similar movie streaming services.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
In what way would not having a video disc playback ability be cutting corners in a videogame console? Is your enjoyment of said videogames in any way harmed by the lack of DVD? No Nintendo console ever supported anything like a mere audio CD, so it is not surprising. Nintendo never intended to make media centre devices, they don't want to make the "box to rule them all" next to your TV set.
I'd say the lack of storage space and Dolby/DTS support is more an issue, as that can directly impact games for some people.
@skywake I'd have to agree that the wi-fi on the Wii U is pants. No other device in my house has the problems it has. I've been with 3 different providers and all had problems. My Wii U is connected to a wi-fi poweline adapter and wired to the USB port via the Wii/U LAN adapter. The wi-fi signal still drops out and I've to reset it by going into settings and back out again. Other devices I have don't have this problem or give me the headaches that Wii U does. It's down to the Wii U. The same way the gamepad can't leave the room without having a heart attack.
@Rexcalibr Before you mention it, the SEGA Saturn played CDs and the Wii U doesn't. So what, everyone was ok with the Wii not doing any of these apparently, but with the Wii U it is unforgiveable? Its just a different strategy. Nintendo does not follow the media centre approach, they make devices with one purpose: Games. It is on that sole purpose that they must be judged.
That's not true that they only make the device for one thing. Why do they have Netflix and Youtube then? Plus, yes, a next gen console should have it be a media center. Duh... the more features the better.
I have a fairly decent collection of Blu-Rays. Not once have I ever thought the lack of a Blu-Ray player on the Wii U was an issue. Because as someone with a decent collection of Blu-Rays? I obviously have a Blu-Ray player. Why would I accumulate a collection otherwise?
Look, when the PS2 and PS3 did it this was a big deal. Because at that stage most people didn't have a device to play back those disks. So their game consoles were a good entry point. But every other console? What's the point. When the Wii U launched Blu-Ray players had been on the market for a good 5 years. DVD players for far longer. At this point it's even longer still. So why does it need it?
Multi-function media boxes? That's what a console is about? Tell that to Microsoft......

Just lol @ people who are shocked that not all people own a DVD player... yeah I don't because your gaming console should already have one and it's one less thing to hook up and have wires all around the floor.
Or you could just tuck the wires behind whatever it is the tv is sitting on. If you need a dvd player I'm sure you can find a second hand one somewhere.

Don't be silly. Common sense would have been for Nintendo to let the Wii U play DVDs. Hopefully they will learn with the NX and at least have a ranking system in Smash Bros. Not sure why they think being behind in everything is considered cool.
