Does the 3DS version have 3D? I'll probably get it, but now it's down to the little extra features on each console that will help me decide. I'm guessing that the touch screen is used in both the 3DS and Wii U version...

Yep, the 3D screenshots on the eshop look quite nice, though I can't comment on the actual in-game footage. Still waiting for the review before picking it up, though I'm sure it'll be good. Though @UpdateNightmare seems to think the online isn't so great for some reason.
After two days with both versions in the house I have to say we hade some fun with it. On release day it was horrible to play online against each other... The waiting screen between moves took many minutes but strangely a restart of the game gave the update isntantly so I guess there is some kind of bug or whatever which they should patch. On the second day it was already more fluently, we continued to play against each other online and most of the time it was really fast. So I don't know... It is fun and it is chess so I don't regret it, playing versus the Computer is fun too and I hope they will patch the online for a stable performance.
As for which Version it's really up to everyones preferences, HD looks great with everything, 3D is good too and you can poth play either with stylus or with buttons. The replay ability is neat, I like to replay the whole online match to see where I could've done better.
After all the online has some issues but it is working (If the loading takes too long, just hit the home button twice and most of the time it works then) and if you like c hess and don't have someone at hand at all the time (or can't really put the board somewhere because of cats and a small kid) you should give this a try and Im quite confident they will resolve the remaining issues with the online stuff, it's not like it's unplayable but it could be better. Hope this helps
I'm at least finding opponents now, but so far I've seen more "Please Wait..." screens than the game itself.
For instance I just made my first move and it just took two minutes for the "Please Wait" loading screen to go away. I'm now waiting for my opponents move.
Previously I got Waiting for game to start, which seems to have been a plain bug at this point.
Does anybody remember Archon? It's kind of a chess game where you have to fight to take the space. It was an Atari game in the early 80s. I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this theme. Would also be cool to have a Star Trek tri dimensional set up
Archon Ultra was an amazing game. And battle chess was also pretty.

Well there's a Battle Chess Successor I believe from the original makers now on Steam early Access.
Then there's also Rooks Keep:
Which the media basically almost completely ignored. Which lead the Viscera Cleanup Detail. And if you know what Viscera is, you can safely assume Rooks Keep is pretty violent, and it had a Archon type mode. But it's also a full fledged Arena game, kinda confusing.
Wow this is Asynchronous Multiplayer? This is why people don't like the multiplayer. There should be an option for that in which if someone wants to play asynchronisly with others it is cross-platform (mainly because of the way mobile gaming works) but you should be able to choose to play with someone in a match without stopping
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
