Just to throw my two cents into this one, since I never played either game online much, and many of my friends outgrew gaming, I'd have to go with Brawl because it's single player mode was much more compelling. I'm sad to see that something along it's lines won't be featured in the game because that was a huge plus for me. A fighting game with a relatively decent story, with progression and bosses. Other than that I'd choose Melee for every other category, I still play it with my brother whenever he is in town.
No it's not. It's really not. I don't even like Melee, but it doesn't take a fan to realize that Brawl basically stripped out any amount of dignity, complexity, and balance the series might've had as a legitimately competitive fighting game, further bringing the series into mear party favor territory that you break out when your friends don't want to play a real fighting game.
This is a pretty opinionated subject(based on observation). The game mechanics/physics have been factually improved, and there's alot more content, so I prefer Brawl by a long shot. Also, Brawl is NOT casual in comparison.
The only thing I can agree with that is wrong with Brawl, is its gravity, otherwise it is the better game.
I much prefer Brawl. Melee just feels like such an empty game. I don't really care what the competitive Smash Community and the FGC say. Brawl is a massive improvement on Melee, despite the various issues, Such as the wonky gravity, poor balance, and tripping.
With all of that said, this subject is moot because Smash 4 Wii U > all.
-slow gameplay, less gravity
-no wavedashing, L-cancelling, hit stun
-harder to combo
-tripping
-Metaknight
The first 3 points are the main reasons Melee is played competitively. It's about the speed, combos, and exploits. And this is why I dislike the game. Brawl is much more methodical. That doesn't make it any less skillful, contrary to what a lot of people like to argue. It's the same reason I prefer Mortal Kombat over Street Fighter. And for the same reasons, Street Fighter is much bigger in the competitive scene. Doesn't mean it's a better game.
Tripping is a valid complaint, though hardly a game changer in any way. It might happen once in a 3 stock match. It's more of a nuisance than anything.
Metaknight being overpowered is also a valid complaint. But besides him, Brawl's roster is unquestionably more balanced than Melee's.
Brawl all the way (until the new one comes out). More character, stages including custom ones, music, unlockables, single and mulitiplayer gameplay contents, and custom/different control opitions why not. Plus my favorite character kirby have become "playable" again (I hate his fireball move in melee).

Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.
Now playing:
Final Fantasy XIV (PC) | The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch) | Celeste (Switch)
Melee, my reason?
I won't hide the fact I'm a sore loser when it comes to game balancing problems and in Brawl little kids that only mash buttons like crazy or just spam smash moves shaking the wii remotes(AKA my cousin and my sister) had a chance to beat me while in Melee you'd have to actually play serious to win, that's reason enough.
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

I like brawl more. Melee has a better fighting system sure but Brawl has better everything else. Also Melee had some really weird characters taking up slots like Dr. Mario and Pichu...
@CanisWolfred I'm not a hardcore Smash player, but I find Brawl better. I like Final Smashes, I like the character diversity, and, believe it or not, I like the Subspace Emissary.
