Topic: Mature games and Nintendo consoles

I been really wanting to bring this up for quite some time but wanted to do a little digging first.

This topic is about mature titles and/or new IP's and the perception from most publishers that they don't sell on nintendo consoles, Which is true but It ain't just nintendo consoles.

Take the conduit games and redsteel 1&2 for example, now we are probably unlikely to see a third because of poor sales of the previous 2 not to mention most games skipping the wii or wii u because publishers will have us believe that it's because these kinds of games bomb on nintendo consoles.

but there are many new and mature IP's that flop on the PS3 and 360 also

lollipop chainsaw 0.36m
prototype 2 0.62m
neverdead 0.06m
army of two TDC 0.07m
velvet assassin 0.14m
bodycount 0.07m
inversion 0.03m
resistance 3 1.29m

There are loads more, now I ain't gonna lie and pretend that these games would have done better on nintendo consoles.

But it seems that mature and new IP's are not selling any better on other consoles either. The biggest offender is sega, when the conduit, madworld, and house of the dead overkill, failed to meet expectations, they pulled the plug on any future mature titles for the system.

The house of the dead overkill sold LESS on the PS3 than the wii, yakuza dead souls, binary domain, bayonetta, vanquish all mature games that BOMBED on the PS3 and 360.

Goldeneye reloaded also sold LESS on PS3 and 360 than the wii version.

Now I'm not saying that this is always the case, but It's worth remembering the next time you hear that mature games "don't sell" on nintendo consoles

I'm surprised Prototype 2 flopped. It's no Infamous, but I thought it had a decent following.

Surprised at the low sales of Lollipop Chainsaw and Prototype 2.

I like how he left out all the good mature games out there, that should be on the Wii U.

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Like what for example? He was specifically talking about new IP's btw...

Third-party games mostly didn't do very well on Wii (I'm not talking about just dance). You're logic is that being a mature game on the PS3 or 360 means sure success is people mean when they say that they don't do well on a Nintedo console. They simply mean they often fail. These kind of games simply sold better on the PS3 and 360, some flopped of course, but that doesn't change the facts. The fact that Activision might not be putting the next call of duty on Wii is evidence against the big N too. A lot of the games you listed got panned critically too.

I enjoyed Prototype 2 and I am planing on getting Lollipop Chainsaw soon since its a Sudu 51 game.

It's pretty obvious the higher the age rating a game has will cut the audience for it, same as a 18 Film. Although in the fairly recent past older people play console games, there is still a large fan base from 3-17 that are guided not to play these games. That must be AT LEAST 40% if not more of the market not legally allowed to play the game, then cut out the people older than that who wouldn't want to play a violent game, then the people who don't want to play the game because they think it's rubbish. It does cut down the market. Plus it must be hard for gore games to stand out amongst each other, especially with the big titles like AC and Far Cry with big promotion budgets.

Personally, I bought my Wii U to play Mario and similar games with my young nephew. The PS3 and Xbox have games for kids, but I think most people would admit they aren't as high quality as Nintendo's flagships. I wouldn't let my nephew play anything I felt was improper for him, the worst way I would let him play Smash Bros. Plus no matter how formulaic it is, you can't deny the quality of a Mario game whatever age you are. Personally for myself I tried Assassins Creed 3, and although I don't really mind the killing (of video game characters) if it counts in the story, I found the story and gameplay quite dull and broken up. It seemed the killing was there for the killings sake. I enjoyed Darksiders 2 cutting cartoony monsters up just like Zelda with blood, and Arkham City and Injustice are great- but they are violent 16 rated games without the gore.

Going back to he film analogy, the Godfather and Saw are both violent 18 rated films, but one is a story where violence is used in context when needed, the other is gratuitous almost set piece gore and torture. Some people like a film or game like Saw, but I don't- there's already too much real suffering in the world for me. I like mature, dark storytelling, but shock value gore isn't for me, and I expect I'm not the only gamer who thinks that- especially a Nintendo gamer.

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

Resistance, Army of Two, and Prototype are not new IPs.

That's interesting TC, but I can't believe you without some form of proof.

That's completely and utterly incorrect. The Call of Duty series is rated M, and has more sales than and other video games out there. Many gamers are above the age of 17, and games with lots of violence, swearing, and mature subjects tend to appeal to them. They find Mario is too "childish" for them. The same thing goes for kids who are UNDER 17. They feel older and cooler when they play a game like Call of Duty. I remember back when I was a kid, I felt like such a boss playing a rated T game when I was like 7 (Super Smash Bros. Melee). M and T rated games generally sell much more than E rated games.

I dunno. CoD is just a commercially successful game in general so I don't think it should represent the sales of M rated games very well.

Just to focus on a few things here:

That was a given, really. The entire buildup for the release of Goldeneye cashed in on the nostalgia Nintendo gamers had for Goldeneye on the N64. By the time it hit the other systems the fog of nostalgia had lifted and it struggled to compete on systems that had plenty of alternatives.

That's also not surprising since you had to buy the PS Move to get the most out of the game. Who wants to play a lightgun game with a controller?

That and lets also remember that the had the collectors edition that came with the gold CCP. How many of those did people buy just for the rare controller or to just resell on ebay for a higher price?

I don't think there's some kind of magical difference between Nintendo gamers and other gamers. If that was the case games like ZombiU and CoD:BO2 wouldn't be on the "Wara Wara Plaza" as often as they are. I think with the Wii the bigger problem was the lack of horsepower. Developers wanting to make something like Bioshock skipped the Wii because it was didn't allow the HD visuals they were after AND it required a different look at controls. The Wii U doesn't have that problem to the same degree.

I'm fairly sure that if Bioshock Infinite and/or Tomb Raider had appeared on the Wii U we wouldn't be having this discussion. I'm pretty sure that when Watch Dogs launches we'll have our answer about whether or not Wii U gamers are interested in that sort of content.

No, you're incorrect. Call of Duty is one of the best selling franchises out there (not THE best). The Call of Duty audience does not care about blood, mature subjects, and swearing since none of that is present in the multiplayer. You know, the selling point of the games?

Though, I will say there is a little blood in the multiplayer but nothing note worthy. It's definitely not a deciding factor for consumers.

There's no violence in multiplayer COD??? The hell?

Yeah...... If you want to talk about the Wii U's audience lack of maturity take a gander at the Injustice MiiVerse community. I suspect that when Smash Bros released there will be quite a few screenshots of upskirts. Obviously not a Wii U thing specifically but it is worth remembering that "mature gamer" isn't about what rating the games they play get. People in their late teens DO tend to play more "mature" games than older gamers as a general rule.
