@Jazzer94: That's the problem. They haven't confirmed nor denied that there will be online play. All we know is that ''Broadband Internet access required for online features.'', but that could mean anything from just miiverse integration to actual online multiplayer. Nobody knows, but it's definitely weird that they haven't yet confirmed online play if it is in the game.

[edit] I found some more: ''Claim your spot in Mario Tennis lore in singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2) as you play with and against family, friends or the CPU using returning and new characters to the series.'' Doesn't really seem as if online play is the focus. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

All that info is based on the E3 and might be outdated. We need to wait to be sure. I'd rather see them delay this one too if they can't get enough content in by November.

If they haven't said by now that there's online, chances are there probably wont be...

@whodatninja: I disagree. Pretty much every multiplayer game Nintendo makes nowadays has an online mode. Even Triforce Heroes. I'm confident there will be online play.

@SuperWiiU: If the game has online multiplayer, I don't know why they didn't tell us, why don't they advertise it as an online multiplayer game, they even did so for Triforce Heroes. By this point the game is finished. They're probably preparing for production and getting the copies ready for shipping. If the game has online play, it's already in the game. I think it's a missed opportunity.

I'm starting to think that this game might've had a very short development time, if this is all there is to the game. I don't know for sure of course, but showing off your standard characters like Waluigi and Daisy in a new trailer a month before launch, whilst we already knew that they were almost guaranteed to be included in the game, tells me that there's not much more to this game.

Play against friends and family in multiplayer matches.

Claim your spot in Mario Tennis lore in singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2) as you play with and against family, friends or the CPU using returning and new characters to the series.

No mention of Online multiplayer. Not even mentioning taking on other players from around the world. Only friends, family, and CPU are mentioned. It is highly unlikely that Ultra Smash will have Online Multiplayer.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

It wouldn't make much sense if the game did not have online multiplayer, seeing as even Open had online multiplayer. If it doesn't... well, I'll have to skip it. Really hoping I don't have to.
Nintendo's silence is baffling, and it's starting to get frustrating. Don't give us some trailer and go back into hiding, Nintendo; come out and give the full details already.

I do think this game needs an Online Mode but from the looks of it, it won't or it will be limited to only friends.

@DiscoGentleman: @whodatninja: I agree with you guys, too. There's really no reason why they would want to keep it a secret. They say "no news is good news", but for this particular case, no news is really bad news... like, a lot of people aren't going to buy the game because of this kind of bad news.

On the other hand, more characters confirmed; Yoshi, DK and Rosalina, what a surprise!

I'm still waiting on a Shy Guy reveal, or at least a newcomer being introduced that I like, but for now I'm pleased to see more returning characters and newcomers revealed. The inclusion of online, and the ability to play online with a friend, is awesome to hear. While my brothers did enjoy both Mario Tennis games a lot, my love for Mario Power Tennis led to me sometimes playing the game just on my own, so online comes across as a very nice option for me.

Rosalina was a rather expected newcomer, and it's surprising to think that Toad has only just become playable in a Mario Tennis game. Neither are newcomers that particularly interest me, but when I think about it, aside from utilising more characters from the expanded Yoshi, DK, Wario, Paper and RPG universe, I'm not sure they'd be any newcomers from the regular Mario universe that they could introduce that would truly get me hyped.

All in all though, my worries have been eased a bit, which is good enough for now.

@Souldin: Toad was actually a playable character in Mario Tennis on the N64.

Oh yeah, so he was. I don't know why I forgot that. So that makes Rosalina the only newcomer so far. Whilst my main wish is for my constant main, Shy Guy, to return, I do hope to see a plethora of newcomers make their Mario Tennis debut.

And if they really introduce someone like Shy Guy, I'd be even more inclined to get it lel

Hooray for fans of Shy Guy. He was in both Mario Tennis 64 and Mario Power Tennis, so this does give him a good chance of returning. He's my main character in the Mario Tennis games, so I really do hope he returns.

This game is suddenly looking pretty good but it still feels rather bare bones. Not to make comparisons but... well... Power Tennis. That game had tons of mini-games and courts, and the presentation was awesome (need I post the outtakes video again?). Ultra Smash looks OK but I feel the game won't last, I'll wait and see until the game releases.

amiibo support a la smash bros and online play? Like I said, I'm surprised as hell.

Good.

Well BEEP me, there will be online play! This just got a lot more appealing to me.

Yay! I won't be skipping the game, then. amiibo Festival, on the other hand...

I like the amiibo functionality in the game, but I hate that Nintendo still hasn't done anything about backing up amiibo data. Does Nintendo really expect us to delete our data on our amiibo? That's just crazy.
@DreamyViridi Yeah, I'm sure there are minigames in the game; it's just Nintendo in silent mode...

@DiscoGentleman: Really? It's £40 in the UK, about €55 in the rest of Europe then. €55 is a little too high for me to pick it up day one. I mean, that's the same price as Xenoblade X, I know which one I'll be getting then. Perhaps later down the road when retailers lower the price...
