The cover has certainly improved from what it used to be, it looks a lot more livelier just by featuring more characters and showing more of the court and audience. At the same time, I don't find it quite as good as the cover to Mario Power Tennis, and I do wish they presented some of the more interesting choice of characters rather than the typical Mario, Peach, Bowser, and Luigi.

Oh, and Luigi is unsurprisingly confirmed to be playable in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash.

£40 is a bit steep even with a free cuddly toy and tennis ball. May buy if you can play online wont be buying if no online option.

Besides, the box art has the Nintendo Network logo on it. I doubt it'll be used for Miiverse only...

God first.

I'm late to this discussion so I'm going to lay out my thoughts on what has been said. I don't mind if it lacks motion controls, it would be nice if it had it but it's not a dealbreaker. If only for the fact that with motion controls I could play against my Niece. What will be a dealbreaker is if the game doesn't have much depth. Which I'm worried about. The 3DS Mario Tennis seriously disappointed on that front.

Online? I think it's fair to assume that it'll have it. Though how much it matters really depends on whether people actually want to go online. So many games come out with online modes that are barren wastelands all but day 1. So again the issue is more about whether or not the game itself plays well.

Lastly I'll add that I've always been a fan of Tennis games. On the SNES and then the GBC the flagship tennis games on those systems were easily in my top 5. Since then no other tennis game I've played has lived upto that standard. Especially not the standard of Mario Tennis on the GBC. Not even Wii Sports matched my enjoyment of those games. So if this can hit those highs? I'm on board regardless of how "barebones" it is. As long as the game plays well I'm sold..... and of that I'm sceptical...

So I wonder who is going to make it in for new characters. Rosalina is an Obvious one but maybe include some more DK characters (DK, Diddy, Dixie, Funky)

Rosalina and Nabbit are all I can guess they'll add. There is still that article earlier in this thread about Nintendo hinting that we'll be seeing quite a few new characters, including possibly from outside Mario games.

Here comes Sonic and Mega Man.

I see this and think "Wario characters". We've had DK characters make guess appearance in Mario spin-offs for a while now. Let's go one further and get Captain Syrup and Ashley up in here.

It is almost guaranteed that is has motion controls because the Wii remotes have to be supported for the offline multiplayer.

I agree with your worries and hopes, but I'm slightly more optimistic. The major reason why we're not sure is because there hasn't been much info and time between the announcement and now, but I have good hope it will be more than just a rushed barebones game.

@SuperWiiU: It's already been confirmed it doesn't have motion controls unfortunately.Wii-motes can be used but only sideways.

It's only mentioned in an early gameinformer article as far as I can tell, so they might've changed it. I also don't know if Nintendo has confirmed it afterwards, as it seems very odd to add motion controls to Splatoon, but leave them out of a tennis game.

@SuperWiiU: It would be very odd indeed.I never played the Wii NPC Mario Tennis but I had EA Grandslam Tennis and it was fantastic.Playing that game online with the motion controls was some of the most intense gaming I've ever had.i used to get so pumped playing that I'd be jumping all over the place, shouting at the umpire debating calls and sweating heavily like I was actually playing for real.My ex girlfriend thought I was off my head haha.Would love some more of that so fingers crossed it has them and they're implemented right.

That trailer didn't really show much. It's nice to see Boo, Waluigi, and Daisy confirmed, but what about the other modes in the game? And the other characters/newcomers that will be in the game? And this was the first trailer for this game since E3 and it's only a minute long? Maybe this is just build up for a huge trailer that is coming up soon. The game is coming in a month, and there's barely any info on it.

Sad but true...

Have to admit, I'm really worried about this game. Nintendo's said pretty much nothing about it since E3, we know nothing about any modes other than the basic matches or any interesting characters or courts and the game just feels like it's being quiely kicked out the door in general.

And it's supposedly coming this month? What the hell?

I'm not sure, the new trailer didn't get me excited either... I'm not expecting 50 characters like Smash, but where the variety? Show some characters, some modes, power-ups, anything really. I enjoyed Power Tennis on the GCN, I hope there's a lot more to this game than the trailers have shown.

Characters are great, sure, but there's a lot more to games than just the amount of characters or the characters themselves. I think with the game being so close to releasing, only a trailer of three new characters does not make the game look good. To me it screams "there's not going to be a lot in this game, so we just made a trailer of characters to help show off the only few features of the game."

I hope more info is released soon, but there's not much time is left! I really don't think I'll be getting this game, it looks a lot like Open, and I didn't enjoy that game much at all. I am glad Waluigi is included though, he's one of my favorite Nintendo characters.

Open was sort of just average and this looks to be using the same mechanics which makes me weary plus what's going on with the online situation?

@Jazzer94: That's the problem. They haven't confirmed nor denied that there will be online play. All we know is that ''Broadband Internet access required for online features.'', but that could mean anything from just miiverse integration to actual online multiplayer. Nobody knows, but it's definitely weird that they haven't yet confirmed online play if it is in the game.

[edit] I found some more: ''Claim your spot in Mario Tennis lore in singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2) as you play with and against family, friends or the CPU using returning and new characters to the series.'' Doesn't really seem as if online play is the focus. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

All they literally have to do is give it the Smash treatment and have online. People will jump at it.
