I have finished Mario Kart and replayed some of Sonic All Star Racing Transformed.
Mario Kart has the better graphics and is the better two player racing game but for the most fun single player game I would give my vote to Sonic All Star Racing Transformed. The levels are more varied and more exciting and with the water craft and aircraft just more fun.
While Mario Kart 8 has the better two player racing experience, the levels, while graphically top notch, are much to clinical and less varied. There are only so many times on so many levels you can drive under water of glide over a bridge without having the feeling we done all this before.
Lets hope Mario Kart 9 has water craft and aircraft .
I honestly cannot go back to Sonic Transformed after playing Mario Kart 8. It's a glitch fest, fairly ugly in it's graphics, and feels really old and boring after 1 race. I enjoyed it when I first got it with my Wii U, but after Mario Kart 8 reminded me how great racing games can be, it just quickly pales in comparison.
Mario Kart 8 is much better, but Sonic Transformed was very fun for what it was however. It had a better battle mode too (an actual battle race instead of a weird mix in 8)
There is not one aspect of SART that I like better. The single player is more substantial and varied, but I find the driving challenges to be mind-numbingly obtuse and mostly, if not entirely, boring. The track designs are a complete mess. I think I prefer the ones from the original in all aspects besides spectacle. I don't recall one that I truly enjoyed mastering in Time Trials. The music, the tracks, the items... It all blends together in a forgettable experience for me. While I enjoy the water sections to some degree, the flying sections might be the single worst idea in any racing game I've played. Overall, I don't really have much desire to play SART anymore... Honestly, ever again.
The only thing I like about SART is dual screen multi, but then the console versions are so poor... The PC version runs much better, but if doesn't transform the experience. And an arcade racer I can't play on the couch with friends is a game I have no use for.
Granted, I only played the demo of Sonic All Stars, but I found it to be a clunky game with a terrible frame rate that rendered it almost unplayable on the Wii-U.
I am absolutely flabbergasted that there are people that even enjoy that game, let alone place it above MK8.
Sonic Racing Transformed is a vastly superior game. The game has better balancing, better, more varied levels, better music, etc. The only thing I can see MK8 trumping it in is graphics.

Mario Kart 8 has practically no singleplayer as far as I can see, where as Sonic Kart actually decided to rip off the best elements of the now sadly dead Wipeout franchise (esp. the varied mission structure) and put them in a game that's easier for noobs to play. Needless to say it's the only Kart racer I'll ever need.
Not even close. Mario Kart 8 IMO is the better game. Better tracks, better music, without a doubt better graphics. Lag-less online play that actually has people playing online. I like Sonic, it's got good single player modes, a more diverse roster (maybe because it has more than just Sonic characters), and dual screen play, but that's all it's really got going for it.

I still play the Steam version of All Stars Racing Transformed (Not touched Mario Kart 8 for weeks).
The characters are actually very different as are the tracks and there is a much better element of strategy of what to do and what character to choose which depends on how good your opponents are what the track is and how much risk you want to take.
I nearly always go for a console mod which means you end up getting hammered if your opponents are really good with weapons.
In Mario Kart 8 I am bored after the first lap.
There is nothing like my favourite tracks in All Stars Racing Transformed in Mario Kart 8 especially Burning Depths which is my favourite. (Best player almost always wins on that track which is what I want for on online game).
Finishing the World Tour is good preparation for playing online because you have mastered most techniques and know the tracks pretty well.
It is rare that you get people choosing the same tracks over and over again.
If you have a lead and lose (Other than very few particularly unlucky events it is your own fault - Someone going All Star or a Swarm at a part that it cannot be avoided but that is it).
Nothing makes Mario Kart really any different.
Amy's Speed Mod on Sunshine Tour is like a different game to say BD Joe's console mod on Golden Axe or the Nights stage.
I have still not mastered risk boosts either I know the principle and I try it sometimes but its rare it works out. Great mechanic.
