Racing is totally peaceful...until that blue shell ruins everything. Also, how the heck do you know what he does afterward considering there's no canon source for this.

Link does fun things as well as serious things, just like Mario. I don't see how this would be out of character especially if he was getting a weapon (like a Chain Chomp) from winning or something.
