Sadly, people will buy Lightning Returns, just to have Cloud's costume. Since Lighnting is the female version of Cloud.

I'm surprised no one has figure that out yet. -_-

Yeah, I'm not buying into Mario anymore now after NSMBU + Luigi. Sonic Lost World is more the old school type of difficulty I like... Massive pass on ALBW also

Even Sonic's last outing left a sour taste in reviewers mouths across the interwebz. I think Sega is finally realizing now that Sonic's 'fast as hell' speedy loopdeeloop' super blast processing shinanigans was just a silly gimmick to try and 1-up Mario by making him look like slow & sloppy lame speghetti filled plumber. Too bad Sonics gameplay feels akward and broken, coming to a complete hault after blazing through a stage is not only akward, but the platforming itself is 2nd rate. so yeah, what i'm trying to say is......Digital sucks for life baby!

Sorry mate, I forgot about the standard 'DEAL WITH IT' gif

Yes. Please. Just pretend the new DKC and Yoshi Yarn are new Mario games, Nintendo.

Nintendo needs more variety e.g.

1. Metroid Wii U
2. StarFox Wii U
3. Zelda Wii U
4. Xenoblade Wii U

Those 4 games are system sellers FOR SURE! Why? Because they are very different. For example I am not going to buy Super Mario 3D world anytime soon because I am buying Wonderfull 101 (I think it's more fun) and Zombie U (Later).

I have recently played NSMBU, Super Mario World, Mario 64, NES Mario..... IT's ENOUGH MARIO FOR NEXT 6 months at least.

exactly! Nintendo needs to focus more on the IPs they've been overlooking lately(though Zelda was never really overlooked ) BUT if I had a WiiU I'd get SM3DW without a doubt...

PS Vita and 3DS XL take top spot. Japanese gamers just don't seem to have the time anymore to play games at home?

Those aren't apartments. That's a Capsule Hotel, where businessmen & the like spend the night on short trips (people don't actually live in them).

That said, portable gaming is bigger than console gaming over there, and while their smaller living spaces probably do play a part in that, it's mostly due to the fast paced lifestyle of the people commuting to & from the big cities, where they spend large parts of their day on the Shinkansen bullet trains.

Many working men in Japan do hours like 8AM - 8/9PM, every day. This doesn't include the 60+ minutes of commuting time they have to do each way.

Metroid and Star Fox aren't system sellers (I wish they were real, though) If that was the case, then the Gamecube shouldn't have been last place. What the Wii U needs is good 3rd Party games and exclusive games that can't be find on any system.

Worth pointing out that PS3/Wii/360 combined in Japan was 22mill units. Go back to the previous gen the combined sales were almost 30mill. Compare that to North America where it was 117mill for PS3/Wii/360 up from 85mill the gen before. So there's your underlying trend.

Plus when Galaxy launched the Wii had about 3x the install base the Wii U currently has in Japan. Should we be surprised that Galaxy did ~3x better? The way the trend in Japan is going there was probably even a larger install base for Sunshine than there is for 3D World. If it doesn't translate into NA sales then you guys are free to make doom threads

@shingi_70: Probably because Mario takes up some of the top spots for almost every Nintendo system. I don't think Mario is as fatigued because there's more variety than you're giving it credit for. There's Mario Kart, Mario Party, 3D Mario, 2D Mario, and 2-3D Mario (3D Land and World). Saying people will be fatigued of Mario will be saying that Final Fantasy is fatiguing...oh wait

Exactly. Just because Mario is in the name, doesn't mean that you're jumping around and stuff.

Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, Mario Golf, Mario at the Olympics, Mario RPG.....

They are all a bit stale. Not just the platformers.

you're doing it wrong, you're supposed to refuse to support new IPs and then complain Nintendo doesn't have new IPs.

But even if we support them how can they be successful without Nintendo pushing them as well. Take something like the Wonderful 101, why didn't Nintendo take advantage its summer release date meant a ton of kids would see the game on TV since they're home all day. Do a promotion with the game with say Nick during Power Rangers or with Cartoon Network doing the DC nation block. Its not that hard to do cross promotion between brands.

Plus for all of crapping on Microsoft/Sony I see on this website and how innovative Nintendo is, the Wii U's gaming line up is the most homogenous of the three new consoles lacking in real variety in first party exclusives.

WAT!

This.

And with so much praise from critics and players, SM3DW was a more than sizable victory for the Wii U

because there isn't enough of a fanbase on Wii U for Wonderful 101 to have a chance to be successful regardless of what they do (and even when they do try to make niche games succeed with tons of money and effort people don't buy them, see: Sin and Punishment 2). There is nothing that was going to make the game a big success, and any attempt to do so would be a waste of money. It sucks but there is nothing that would have made that game a success.

There wasn't enough hype for it, man. It's all about the hype.

true, many people buy games just because of the hype even if normally they would never show any interest in that type of game
hype is sure a powerful weapon...

It sold in the tens of thousands. That is pitiful for how good of a game it is. If it had some hype and advertising behind it, would it have been a million seller? No...but it could have at least been respectable and done around 150-200K in sales.

Having said that though, the game is VERY hard to describe, and really needs to be experienced to understand what it is. It's also quite difficult too, so even though it looks bright and cartoony, I think most novice gamers aged 7-10 would have a lot of trouble progressing in it.

Perhaps the best form of advertising would be plentiful demos at retailers
