While it may seem bad, 100,000 in the opening weekend is not all that bad a start. Mario 3D World still managed to get second place and Wii U was the best selling system in Japan that week too. As I have said the real test will be in the states. Besides those numbers don't even account for digital sales.
First week sales in Japan it's the worst a 3D Mario title has done since at least Mario 64. Galaxy moved more than twice as much, 3D Land moved more than three times as much and Sunshine moved almost three times as much. There are good reasons for those (the Wii was the Wii, 3D Land is a portable title and gamers in Japan have moved more towards portables since Sunshine) but that fact remains. For a game it's not that bad, for the Wii U it shouldn't be unexpected but it's still not fantastic.
That said I don't think it's the "insta-doom" that people claim it is. We should just wait it out and see what it does over the medium term and across other regions.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
Eh, not bad a t all. It's not counting eShop sales as far as I know and Mario is more geared towards the west anyway. I'm sure Wii U still saw a solid boost in hardware sales.

@shingi_70 I have been thinking about this for a while now as well. I think the Wii U will end up being Nintendo's Dreamcast....
Kind of ironic that they both have a screen on the controller lol
Mario Sunshine came out six years after the latest Mario game, making Mario an anual franchise means the hype is lower, but it can still have some good sales in the long run.
Western sales will be much better though, that's for sure. The japanese console market is in big crisis. Just look at the last-gen, Wii, Ps3 and 360 sales combined couldn't reach 20% of the total hardware sales.

5000.
with evidence to back a claim, even zero is a solid number

To be honest I feel that people are a bit burnt out on Mario and Platformers in general. I feel Donkey Kong TF will have diminishing returns as well.
I'm not burnt on platformers, it's my favourite genre. FPS' on the other hand... Unlike SEGA at the time, Nintendo still operates a very profitable business, the handheld market. And the Wii U will eventually become profitable as well. Even GameCube did. So they have no reason to discontinue it.
By the way, is that Dreamcast controller specially made for lefties or what? xp

it's hard to see but I think the image is mirrored(the SEGA logo in the moddle of the console also looks like it's backwards)

Yeah, I noticed, I was just fooling around. Photoshop failure. Were it not the case, it would be odd to see a blue swirl logo controller (European) on a orange swirl logo console (American/Japanese). The Dreamcast will always be one of my favourite consoles, it was a dream console come true on a company living a nightmare. SEGA management was royally messed up. After Mega Drive/ Genesis, the flops just kept piling up. 32X, Mega CD, Game Gear, Saturn. There is a very stark contrast between SEGA and Nintendo as a company and business practices, I know that now.
@MrWalkieTalkie either that or they have so many gamers that only play offline that it's easier to have a good match when hanging out than playing online
@Samurai_Goroh wow I didn't know the logo had different colors in some regions(maybe because SEGA was never popular where I live, not Brazil as a whole more like only in the school I went when I was a kid)

I'm not giving up hope yet, but if Mario Kart and Smash Bros. yield these same overall below average results come next year (which I REALLY believe won't happen, hopefully), then nothing can save the Wii U.
