1. Bioshock Infinite (360, PS3, PC)** Take 2 Interactive - 750k - 1m, highest 1st month in franchise history
2. Tomb Raider 2013 (360, PS3)** Square Enix Inc - >600K, highest 1st month in franchise history, less than 10K between 2nd and 4th place.
3. Gears of War: Judgement (360) Microsoft - >600k, less than 10K between 2nd and 4th place. Will move down a spot if you include GOW:A bundles.

9. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct (360, PS3, NWU) Activision Blizzard
10. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 (360, PS3) Namco Bandai Games

**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)

Lego City Undercover sold more than 100k but less than 130k
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (both versions combined) sold more than 100k, less than 130k, but more than Lego City
Fire Emblem 64k (digital and retail combined)
Need for Speed Most Wanted Wii WU less than 10k
Castlevania 3DS around 30k.

A decent jump in 3DS numbers to coincidence with the release of Fire Emblem and Luigi's Mansion... hopefully that sends a big message to Nintendo that when they produce similar quality games on the Wii U, it will start selling too.

Things aren't looking that up for the WIi U but I can undertstand why they have delayed a bunch of software. The 3DS was doing terrible in upon launch and it took 7 months between before Super Mario 3D land came out and major software support saved the system. I'm guessing Nintendo plans to do the same since June is the 7th month the wii u will be out and that's when support restarts.

I expected GOWJ to sell much worse than it did so I guess that's good.

I wonder how many digital sales some oft he Wii U games got versus retail. Monster Hunter is an example of a game that if I were to pick up would be on digital download for both the 3DS/Wii U.

WAT!

Normally I'd agree that this is a lazy excuse but that isn't praise for Wii U as much as a sign that Vita is the current system that might actually be in danger. Wii U at least makes sense between continuing problems stemming from how bad late Wii software was (by pratically not existing mostly) and the first year of gaming systems, especially home consoles, being really bad for quite some time. There is not even an excuse for why Vita is still doing so poorly, even by normal standards it is completely unacceptable and I am amazed at how poorly Sony has handled it.

I was just poking fun at the situation. Though I must say 10k for NFS:MW is pretty shocking.

It is a game that came out ~6 months later than all other versions. Even with improvements and such, anyone that wanted the game before will have gotten it long before it came on the Wii U. I was one of those that got it on the Wii U, but I also took advantage of EA's mistake on Origin, and got it for $30. I think that is also one reason for the low numbers for the Wii U. It is retailing for $60 because it is "new" while other versions go for less.

Good point. Sadly though, now EA is just gonna use these numbers to justify cutting back on Wii U support. And whether you like EA or not, Nintendo needs all the third party support they can get.

Wow... And yet bizarrely there are still people who claim that the Wii "dominated" the gen and "destroyed the competition". I'm guessing they've been purposely avoiding any sales charts since 2009...

I mean, I know Michael Pachter gets a hard time round here for his predictions, but seriously, I remember very clearly the (rather smug and arrogant I'm afraid to say) predictions of Nintendo fans during 2007/08/09 about how huge a margin the Wii would "destroy the competition" by the end of the gen (and mocking anyone who disagreed). Looks like in two of the biggest markets (US and UK) it may not even win...

So in February was 4 weeks the Wii U with no real major releases but yet sold more than March which was 5 weeks and with 3 major(maybe) releases AND it got outsold by the Wii?

No words can explain the mindfuck.

I guess LCU, MH 3 U, and NFS: MW U didn't do much to improve sales :/

How can the Wii U get outsold like that from a dead console? They really needed a Smash or Kart from the get go.
I wonder if MS and Sony will have the same issue since the PS3 and 360 will still have lots of game getting released.

I love Nintendo, but I do have to wonder about their resource allocations and Iwata's core competency sometimes. I know DS and 3DS had rough starts, but Iwata said that they wouldn't repeat the 3DS mistakes. The Wii U's launch day line up was fine and had good November and December sales, but after that it went down hill.

No, I am not doomsaying. I am certain the Wii U will start selling better starting August. I just wish Nintendo would figure out how to not repeat mistakes.

I'd love to know where those numbers came from..

NPD does not announce hardware sales numbers. The only people really tracking them is VGCharts, which notoriously underestimates Hardware Sales, and they put Wii U over 70k.

I'm really getting sick of people just spewing numbers out like they are facts. The only company that has reported it's Hardware Sales and that is Microsoft.

Edit: Haha lol I just found what appears to be the original source for those numbers and it's a complete joke. It's a chart comparing VGCharts, Wedbush and EEDAR with so called NPD numbers, numbers NPD doesn't release. The funniest part is the glaring manipulation in the numbers. VGCHarts underestimated Xbox and PS sales, Wedbush and EEDAR dramaticly over estimate Xbox and PS sale and the so called NPD numbers put XBox and PS well over VGCharts and well under the other two. Yet somehow, VGCharts puts the Wii U at 85k Sales, Wedbush puts it at 55k and EEDAR puts it at 65k and magically, somehow, VGcharts only overestimated Wii U sales and the "NPD Numbers" put the console at 67k in line with the two Analysts that couldn't predict a Sales total if it was told to them by the First Party itself..

I genuinely don't think Nintendo had much of a chance to avoid early Wii U sales beyond launch being incredibly slow. I mean, they could have given Ubisoft ALL the advertising money to prevent Rayman Legends from being delayed and immediately multi-platform I guess.

Even based on your idea this is what VGChartz had to say for 2013 so far.

U.S. - Yearly Sales - Total
X360 - 864,962 (-84%) - 39,352,150
PS3 - 674,856 (-80%) - 24,278,457
3DS - 633,945 (-83%) - 8,440,937
Wii - 309,014 (-85%) - 40,963,187
DS - 251,887 (-87%) - 52,480,824
WiiU - 209,775 (-78%) - 1,142,906
PSV - 109,457 (-91%) - 1,286,506
PSP - 28,288 (-89%) - 19,662,619

I'm sure you're going to consider my comment "smug" and "arrogant," but those numbers are only U.S. sales, man. The 360 tanked in Japan. If you would change that chart to worldwide sales, the Wii DID "destroy the competition" last gen in terms of pure sales.

P.S. I don't own the Wii. In fact, I kind of hate it lol

rallydefault

Haywired

@rallydefault
No, I didn't find you smug or arrogant at all (but you must remember as much as I do the premature gloating of Wii fans of those years... It wasn't becoming of the Nintendo community). Certainly the Wii will still win in total worldwide sales, but not by as big a margin as many predicted. It will probably end up close to about 35%-37% market-share, which I wouldn't consider "domination". The PS2, now that was "domination", the Wii as it turned out, not so much. I mean, I don't see how a console can be considered to have "destroyed the competition" when it will (likely) actually lose to that competition in two of the biggest markets (US and UK).
