Can anyone who owns an external Wii U hard drive suggest or point to a link of a nice one, works well, that's also fairly inexpensive? I've run out of room for eShop games and don't feel like deleting and redownloading as needed.

You can just buy a SD card reader at your local store, put it on the back of your U and just buy a SD card, shouldn't be pricey, however the more GB you want on a SD card the more it costs.

You can find an 1TB External Hardrive in Amazon for 50 bucks. That's enough to last you for awhile if you're just downloading Eshop games and even retail games.

The only "rule" is that you need an Y-cable to power the HDD if it isn't externally powered.

Depending on the amount of space you think you will need you can choose.

If you plan to download all your games from the eShop including retail games, Wii and GameCube then get a USB 3 HDD. It will need to be powered from a mains adapter or as jariw says a Y cable to give the drive enough power.

Or if you don't download retail games and already have a large Wii library or would rather have the media version then look at a USB 3 pendrive. I personally have a 128GB pendrive in my Wii U which cost me £16/$24

The reason I say USB 3 is so that you can get the most out of the USB bus on the Wii U. Which is USB 2.

@Undead_terror: Why not just buy a thumbdrive, why get SD and an adaptor? And why the back? Curious.

@TwilightAngel: I've never seen a powered drive that cheap. And if you buy a portable you still need a Y cable. Which I can't use as I have an Ethernet adaptor, DI portal and Skylanders portal all plugged in. My kids and I go back and forth a lot and I don't want them constantly plugging them in and out.

@jmbarnes101: If you have any old PCs or laptops laying about with drives in them you can buy an enclosure for $15 or $20.
I'm using 1 similar to this with an old IDE 80GB HDD.

Good luck.

@rjejr: You just remembered me I have that old desktop pc collecting dust in the garage! The PC died years ago but I'll try its internal HD. I don't even know how an HD looks, but if it works (I saw there are many cheap "internal HD to USB" cables on the net) it may worth a try.

Praise the Sun, and Mario too.

@andreoni79: If it's a desktop PC the internal HDD will look a lot like this, and be held in by 4 screws, 2 on each side.

If it's more than a few years old it will probably have a big wide IDE connector.

Otherwise it's SATA. Make sure you buy the correct new connector, either IDE or SATA, or else it won't work.
