If there was ever a game that needs a level editor it is Mario Kart. Without battle arenas, I rarely see enemies in battle mode, especially when I play with my kids via local multiplayer.
That doesn't seem like much, but battle mode was the main mode my kids and I enjoyed. Without arenas it as basically nullified the fun experience we've had with Mario kart.
My kids now, either want to play Mario kart 64 or minecraft on the PC.
It's really a shame because this has been one of our favorite games and we were really excited for this new version.
The good thing is, this is an easy fix. Nintendo could add battle arenas one day as a DLC or add a level editor as a DLC.
Here's to hoping one day they do one or the other or both and bring that excitement we use to have playing 4 player battle mode.
even with the map....those racing maps are designed for racing. You can follow another kart for quite a ways before catching up with them.
Those tracks are for battles. That's why not all tracks are available for it and the U-turn feature is included in battle mode. The only issue I have now is when there are very few players and the leader can play a tactical hide-and-seek, but that wouldn't really be solved by arenas either.
No, I reject this. I can't even make a joke about it, battle mode is so bad in 8, it just doesn't work. The maps were not designed for battles and it is so abundantly clear. And it's odd because if you just changed up some parts of some of these maps you could make some decent maps probably but just slapping the whole race track into battle mode is one of the most baffling design decisions Nintendo's ever thought of.

How much have you actually tried it? I've played it quite a lot, and I absolutely don't find it less fun than arenas, specially with the 2.0.0 update.
"The battle mode was obviously an afterthought."
The one major complaint about mario kart 8 is no battle arenas. And instead of offering an easy fix and adding some to DLC content, they decided to add regular racing maps. That tells me, they either, don't care as much about the customers as they once did, or they are just not that smart.
I believe it is the first one. They just don't seem to care as much about their users.
And to add insult to injury, they announced the future DLC in May as not havin battle arenas. So, not only are they not adding battle arenas to the next DLC, they aren't adding battle arenas to the future one that doesn't come out till May.
Somebody really dropped the ball on this one. Someone high up at Nintendo isn't listening to the customer....and when they disappears, the great experiences begin to disappear. What makes Nintendo special disappears.
I can not actually believe Nintendo tried mk8's battle mode for real and thought it was a good idea. And even if they wanted to do something different with it, anti-gravity says "Hi... USE ME!

I have played it a lot and I think it's a great idea, except on Sherbet Land. I never really understood the big thing about the Wii battle modes, haven't played the earlier ones.

Mk wii was the first one I didn't buy/have. So I don't know about that one. But I think having a standard arena for some silly fun really works well together with the racing as a complete Mario Kart experience. The fact that it lacks that almost too simple multiplayer goodness is kind of mind-blowing. Like BOOOOM....mind blown.

Having the map makes it at least playable but it's not fixed. The open maps were much, much better for battles than the circuits are. They don't even need to do a level editor for it so I don't know why that has been brought into the discussion. All they need is a square map with nothing on it and it'll be better than what it has ATM.
