Got this game for the kids a few months ago. Put it in, and cannot get past the first screen that wants to know what language to use for the set up. It just blinks english. the controllers wont allow us to move or choose any option. Not sure if this set up and game MUST be played using the WII U special larger controller with the screen on it, but ours went bad and no longer works. Having a hell of a time trying to find a replacement for that as well. Can anyone help?

You mean a Gamepad? Contact Nintendo, if there's warranty left. You'll have a hard time to get the Wii U to work without a Gamepad.

Also, how did the Gamepad go bad? It seems like some users have problem with the Gamepad charging cable.

I got it on ebay so no warrenty...it lasted a few months then went bad. Took it local guy who does good work with games and PC's and he told me mother board went bad. 100$ to fix and i may just do that.

For whatever reason, some games require a Gamepad as the initial input to get past the startup screen. Most will let you switch in the future, but unfortunately you appear to be stuck without a functioning Gamepad.

Borrow one or get yours fixed, if possible. That's ASAP because you could easily run into more issues without it...

Check with Nintendo how much they want for a new replacement Gampead first, or how much they would charge for a repair.

100 for repair 200+ for new game counsel. The thing is that other wii u games work fine except for the ones I have talked about here. dont understand why the game wont set up without the gamepad.

A 2nd Wii U is something to think about. One for the living room and one to shuffle about the house and anywhere else you desire. You could even play it like a true handheld with Off-TV play and just a wall outlet. There is plenty of utility for such a concept, provided you amass a proper collection of Wii U and/or Wii games to play. Shouldn't be a problem there, except I should note Wii U games may be going out of print... (Slueth around and use every opportunity to price match + stack deals and you'll be golden.)

Anyway, it's certainly something to think about. You can easily sync and re-sync the Gamepad amongst two systems and, in your case, simply having one will unlock much of the functionality of the Wii U you currently have. Honestly, this issue is more pivital than accessing a few games. Without a Gamepad, you cannot do several critical features, such as configure internet settings, update your Wii U, or change the display resolution. It's true that recent updates have improved accessibility without a Gamepad, you first need a Gamepad to update your system. It's a completely vital part of the Wii U system.

If you are going to bother though, know that Wii U games like MK8, SSB4, Super Mario 3D World, Nintendoland, Pikmin 3, Captain Toad, Wind Waker, Rayman Legends, and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze cannot be beat for kids of practically all ages (mine are 5 and 3, they love each of those with the only barrier being reading ability). They all have superb multiplayer and I would easily reccomend them to any adult gamer.

There are many of Wii U games where the Gamepad is (or will be) required. Pikmin 3, Lego City: Undercover, Tengami, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, NintendoLand, ZombiU, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Mario Maker, some parts of Super Smash Bros U, etc. It's an integral part of the Wii U.
