My memory is a bit muddled on this, but hopefully someone will provide me with a quick resolution. What was the last brand-new, all original IP out of Nintendo (or a fully owned subsidiary like Retro)? I want to say Pikmin and/or Advance Wars (both from 2001), I can't remember any after that.

You have a bad memory.

I believe it would either be Pushmo or Dillon's Rolling Western on the 3DS eShop.

Advance Wars, which is in the Nintendo Wars franchise, started out in like 1988.

Lots of censorship here...

Ah, I don't have a 3DS so I don't really know what's going on there. Pushmo fits the bill, but it doesn't look very substantial. Oh well, I guess beggars can't be choosers. Dillon's Rolling Western looks like it was developed by an indie studio and published by Nintendo.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.

Does Chibi Robo count? Most people consider Pikmin to be the last major one. It's a shame, it really is, but I can understand Nintendo playing it safe right now. Wii U had a great launch, but if you take away those launch month sales and just look at monthly sales though 2013, it's selling worse than any console since the Saturn. I think Nintendo needed good games that they can get out quick, so that's why we're seeing this Mario game, and another Donkey Kong. Hopefully, once they're out of the 'megaflop' situation they'll start showing a bit more scope with the games. The Wii U has had one of the worst game droughts I can remember, and that's definitely coming to an end now, so that's a positive at least.

Looked up Disaster, wasn't aware that Monolith was fully owned! So I guess that or Xenoblade (if counted separate from Xenogears) might likely fit the bill.

The thing is, Nintendo can do a lot with its franchises so a lot of the time I think they feel that they don't really need to make new ones. Heck, Mario could probably cover every genre by himself if they wanted to.

I miss the days of the N64, where you had Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day. I wish Nintendo had worked on a new IP 3D platformer for the Wii U launch. Save Mario for a year or two in, but just experiment with something for the launch. I'm sure Miyamoto must have ideas for new characters and words rolling around inside his head.

That's exactly it. Pity, apparently Disaster didn't even get an NA release so I've not even heard of it. I want to play it now, actually. Steel diver looks ... interesting.
