Topic: Lack of Wii Mote Pisses Me Off

So I recently mentioned to my family that I was looking to purchase a Wii U sometime this summer once I had enough saved up. I used to own a Wii but I hardly used it, I was in high school at the time and was busy with school and friends to have enough time to balance gaming on both my PS3 and my Wii, I eventually sold my Wii to my friend and figured I could just get another one once I had more free time. I missed out on a lot of great games on the Wii like Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Skward Sword and more and I was really interested in Mario Kart 8, X and Super Smash Bros U so I figured now was the best time to start saving.

Well, I ran into a financial hiccup and I ended up in the hospital needing surgery. My family decided to surprise me with a Wii U when I got back home and I was so excited to start playing some of the games on the Wii U like Super Mario 3D World and ZombiU but I was mostly looking forward to being able to replay Galaxy and then moving on to Galaxy 2. After I recovered I opened up my Wii U and I realized something. It doesn't include a Wii Mote? Now I hadn't done any research on what is actually included beforehand because I was very early into saving, I saw no point in looking it up. Obviously my family had no idea what was inside and I hadn't mentioned the Wii Mote being essential to my plans. So now I have a Wii U with Super Mario Bros U and Super Mario Galaxy but no Wii Mote...

It is my own fault for not looking this up yes, but I had no idea I was getting a Wii U so early into the summer. I just feel like if you're gonna include backwards compatibility with Wii games you should include the Wii Mote, especially because it's still being used to play current gen games. I feel like it might have been more appealing as a product if you had the option to use the Wii Mote right out of the box, for those skeptical about the Game Pad. What do you guys think, should it have been included with the console? Or was Nintendo right to keep it separate in order to reduce the overall price of the console?

They probably should have included it. At least by this point they should, especially with the local multiplayer focus.

It definitely should be included.

I can understand not including the Pro controller, but leaving out the Wiimote, one of the console's main controllers, is silly.

Cringing is really fun.

i don't think they realized the issue till recently (mario kart 8 bundle comes with one) i think they assumed and body plaing wii games on a u would have a few wiimotes kicking around.

It shouldn't be too expensive to pick up a Wii remote/plus & Nunchuck, you can probably score some used on eBay for almost half the price if you really wanted to.

I know that and I am looking into it, should be getting a paycheck this Friday so I will probably find something soon. I just find it silly that they didn't include it up until now with the Mario Kart bundle. Just glad to know that people like me in the future won't have to deal with this issue xD

I agree they should have included it. It's almost as if Nintendo forgot all of the reasons the Wii flew off the shelves. Including something like the Wii Remote is what encourages developers to develop for that control scheme.

I did not know that... What the hell is going on at Nintendo xD

Veteran players (nearly all of the Wii U's first customers) have Wiimotes left over from their old Wii, so for most customers the extra controller would be redundant. For newer/"casual" players Nintendo has included a controller in Wii Play U and Nintendo Land bundles. But it seems that you're in the smaller market of new, more serious players who needs a Wiimote and probably wouldn't be interested in those games.

Nintendo Land at least is worth getting for any kind of player, so you could save some money if you can find one of those bundles.

I could probably google this but I would appreciate an answer anyway, just because you can probably convince me more than Gamestops site for example lol But what exactly is included in Nintendo Land? Is it similar to what Wii Sports was? Which I considered kind of a tech demo to the Wii.

You can get a refurbished Wii remote+ and nuchuck for $20 off of Nintendo's online shop(NA). That saves $40 vs. new.

With that said, like everyone else has already said, they figure you would already have them from Wii.
I totally agree, though. They'll probably bundle a Wii remote+ with every console, once they can still sell it for $300.

If you had a Wii and a Wii mote and sold them a while ago, you probably would want to upgrade to a Wii mote plus by now anyway.

An original Wii Mote will work generally, but for most games including Nintendoland you will want the gyroscopic Wii Mote plus.

Ultimately, it's a little strange to expect a "last gen" controller be bundled with a new system, so I'm not sure why you expected it...but whatever.

Wii Mote+ are sold everywhere. If there is one controller that you won't have trouble finding it's a Wii Mote.

LOL I thought I was the only one who thought that when I opened up my Wii U box. I would suggest getting retail Wii Party U because it comes with a Wii mote plus. The bundle usually retail cheaper than the wii mote itself (which makes no sense).

It is kinda disappointing. Making a game that needs wiimotes at the moment, and it just adds that extra barrier / bit of friction to people being able to play the game.

I had wiimotes so it was not a problem for me. Specially now that they have those awesome Mario/Luigi/Peach themed wiimotes.

I guess they want you to open the wii u, realize you need a wiimote, then when you go back to the store, you are tempted to buy something else.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

Where have you guys been? The last couple of generations of video game consoles have only been supplied with 1 controller.

I never really gave it much thought.
I already have several Wii Remotes left around from my Wii so it's never been an issue, and I imagined it'd be the same with most people buying the Wii U.
And for the others, it shouldn't be too hard to go and pick one up, just like you would if you needed a second controller on any other system.
I would have much preferred my Wii U come with a Pro Controller, could still do with some more of them.

Yeah, that was a really strange decision.
What was even stranger was that in Australia we did get a charger with ours, despite also being a PAL territory.
I still had my charger from my original 3DS (and no idea where my DSi one went), but it's always nice to have another.

They sell Wiimotes for £40 and the cheapest they are usually available for is £30. nunchuck at £15. Pro Controller at £40.

Extra £100 just like that. (Of which most is pure profit).

@DexInDaJungle Go to the Nintendo Online Store and buy a refurbished Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk for $20. I got one, and I was very impressed.

Personally, I'm happy to not have to pay for another Wiimote when buying the Wii U. I already have quite a few Wiimotes from the Wii (and some nunchucks), and the GamePad and the Pro Controller is by far the most used controls here.
