Even though Project Sora has been disbanded and reabsorbed into HAL Laboratories, I think Nintendo would be foolish to let a franchise this well received go to waste by not making more of it. That said, the gameplay didn't really work all that well on the 3DS, what with cramps and awkward controls being a serious issue, and Kid Icarus in HD would be amazing. On the 3DS, his game played out like a strange mix of Kingdom Hearth, Star Fox, Metroid Hunters, and Super Smash Bros. Would you expect Kid Icarus to even be the same game on the Wii U? Or would you expect them to continuously change the gameplay in order to keep Pit the most diverse member of the Super Smash Bros roster?
I think the next game will probably be a retro throwback with gameplay in 2D and Pit rendered in 3D like New Super Mario Bros. They could add in new gameplay concepts like dodging, charge shots, and manual aim (see Shadow Complex or Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet), but keep it mostly focussed on action like a scrolling shooter with platforming elements. Having the banter between Pit, Palutena, and Medusa would be especially welcome in a game that more closely resembles the original.
On the other hand, they could also take the series in an entirely new direction. I've said it a couple of times now, but I think the gameplay in Metroid Other M would suit Pit more than Samus. With the Wiimote turned sideways, it's a retro controller and all Pit really needs is a jump button, a D-Pad, and a fire button. Taking advantage of the Wii U gamepad would provide some more options, such as a button for dodging, and separate buttons for long range and melee attacks. Before Kid Icarus even came out I imagined him as the kind of character that would fit right in in a more light-hearted Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, or God of War. There's no question that Pit is indeed an Action game character.
And what of the storyline? It's set in a combination of Nintendo and Greek Mythology, so introducing more greek gods is a possibility. Dionysus would be hilarious, as the god of alcohol and freedom. Zeus might also be good for a joke or two as he was known not only as the most powerful god but also the biggest playboy, must to Athena's dismay. Pit also seems like the type of character that would be really awkward in a relationship, so introducing a new character that announces herself as his 'girlfriend' could end up quite the riot, especially if this makes Palutena jealous. That joke could go even further if their first meeting is on the field of battle as she's introduced as Medusa's secret weapon, and then revealed to be Medusa's daughter. Grandma Echidna might approve, but not Medusa or Palutena. And what would that mean for the identity of her dad? They could reference Bowser Jr here as well on that point as Medusa tries to say gods can reproduce on their own, but gets called out first for getting too close to Hades, and then for being the mistress of Zeus. Speaking of which, Zeus may be the new overall villain, smiting humans for their lack of faith in the gods.
What do you think Nintendo should do with the next installment of Kid Icarus?
