Ok. I had the physical copy, lost it, now bought the digital one.

Then I read that the space needed was too much (13gb). Figured I'd have to delete a replay or two or something silly. Then I see my system has the free space of 4gb! Blasphemy! I bought the mario & luigi premium bundle, which should come with a 32gb console. So why the heck is it showing 4gb left when all I got on my wii is:

ZombiU demo: 1.6 gb
Wii Sports Club: 0.7gb
Pikmin 3: 4.2 gb

And a total of 1gb from smaller stuff

That means I got 11gb of max space if I delete everything!! What the hell?

Should I contact the store I bought from or nintendo? Now I rebought the stupid game without any way of playing it.

Ps, got no way of connecting an external drive, since for SOME REASON it needs to be formatted first?!??

A external drive always is gonna need to format first.

Yeah I'm pretty sure that the Wii U does some sort of encryption or does some other weird thing with the file system. Maybe some obscure and slightly modified file system. Presumably to reduce the risk that people go digging into the files and so on. But it's not a huge deal.

Look, if you're in a real desperate immediate need for it and don't want to format a HDD? Go down to the shops, go to the stationary section. Grab a 16GB or 32GB thumb-drive for $10 to $25 or so. It's not ideal and if you could grab a small HDD for a bit more that'd be better. But it'll solve your problem. It's not a big deal at all.
