There are going to be Cross-Platform games in the future. Nintendo has confirmed it. S&ASRT was a launch game, so of course it wasn't going to be a big seller, nor very impressive.
But, from what I've been told, you can get multiplayer in other games like Revelations and COD Ghosts. So, to judge online play from a launch title is somewhat immature.

I'm pretty sure he meant cross-platform...for ALL platforms.

Keep it PG-13-ish.
To be fair its free this weekend on steam, normally the multi-player on that game is just as dead. But if you're after online player you're better of going with Xbox1 or pc (PS4 maybe but if you recall PS3 took ages catching up and is still regarded to be second best to XB).
Nintendo's focus is local multi, online is a bonus where given. There are however quite a few online games available on wii u worth checking out and more to come.
there's MH3U but the "cross-platform"(3DS and WiiU) play is almost only offline(3DS players still need a WiiU to play online so it's not worth the trouble)
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

Yeah, if online multiplayer is that important to you, you may want to sell a Wii U and get something else. Things aren't going to change for the system, unless if Nintendo does a major overhaul on the online infrastructure for the system. No friend invites to games, no party chat system, no cross-game chat system, not knowing when a friend comes online and is playing a game you have (unless if you take the time to check, which doesn't exactly facilitate playing with your friends), etc. It's kind of telling that the Wii U isn't just the only system that doesn't come with a headset: it's the only system without a first-party headset in general.
Even if certain games get good online communities (Mario Kart) it'll be by a game by game basis, not as a network overall. Without direct friend invites and party chat, organizing games is nearly impossible.
Best thread ever

Why would the Wii U need a 1st party headset? There's already the Nintendo licensed Turtle Beach headsets, the RocketFish one, and any regular 3.5mm headphone with mic is compatible. In terms of voice chat options(as long as it's stereo), Wii U has literally 1000s more compatible WIRED headsets. 1st party doesn't mean anything, in this case. Not to mention that the Wii U mic is compatible as long as devs implement it(Monster Hunter, RE: Revelations).
As to the OP: There's more games out there then Sonic Racing. I agree that cross-platform should be more of a norm that it currently is, but there's alot that goes into an online system like that. Any cross-platform game is reliant on the network, rather than specific hardware coding. Once a game strays too far on a certain platform, they can't make the game work as a cross-platform(most of the time).
There's a few games that will be on the eShop with cross-plaform multiplayer. I know you can cross-platform between the 3DS and Wii U in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.
In conclusion, if you really want more online stuff going on, you're gonna have to go somewhere else. Depending on the game, I can't really see PC having that big of an online gaming communty either, but the decision is yours. Nintendo systems always have the games I prefer the most, so I would never consider selling it for anything else.

PC is growing huge, unlike Nintendo Steam knows how to run a virtual store and revive games. Recently they had a free weekend of Sonic All Star racing (again), introduced a "yogcast" cart (popular youtubers) and put the game on sale for $5. Now all the sudden the population is booming again on Steam, That's 4k-5k concurrent players which is probably more than there is on the entire Wii U...
Heck a game like Starbound gets released (as alpha early access) and it grabs 90k concurrent players. It's capable of doing that because of the other well established games on Steam which makes people use the platform.
Maybe mario kart 8 might improve things a bit?
All I know is 3rd party multiplayer on the Wii U is lackluster and cannot grow in the current environment where everything in the E-Shop is overpriced and with no real games that can significantly grow the online platform.
Lets take Steam again and remove the existence of Cstrike, DOTA2, Half life and Left for Dead, bring it back to the state of 2006. Would there be 7 million concurrent users currently on Steam, I doubt it.
You can see the more users on the platform, the bigger the concurrent user numbers grows and spreads to other games. More players brings in more players.
The only way I see 3rd party multiplayer games surviving on the Wii U is if it burrows the playerbase from other platforms or if the Wii U actually brings in titles that can actually grow the online platform. Most of the games on the Wii U atm requires an already established player-base.
It really just depends on the game how busy the multiplayer is... for instance, once Mario Kart is out, you'll be able to find full online rooms for yeeeeeears. sonic however is not as popular a game, and especially a year after release, you won't find much.
Steam can still have good numbers because it keeps pulling in new people as the games drop to rock bottom prices.
I have a 3DS, but not a Wii U, and reading this, well... wow. Even the 3DS has a better online infrastructure than the Wii U...
I don't know about structure. I think it's more that online won't matter as much for a handheld, since it isn't stationary. Still, you can directly join games on some 3DS games, at least. You can't do that with any Wii U game yet. Which is rediculous, since it would work great with COD, NFS, etc.
The Wii U just has some weird design decisions when it comes to online. You know how the 3DS has a blue light flash for spotpass and an orange light flash for friends being onlibe? Well, the Wii U does a blue light on the gamepad for everything related to anything online. Miiverse posts, friend requests, friends showing up online, the whole she-bang. So not only is there no differentiating factor, but if you're looking at anything besides the gamepad (like the TV, for example) you'll be oblivious to anything until you press the home button.
It also helps that the 3DS has a waaaaaay better library of games than the Wii U and a more active userbase. And the games are cheaper, too.
@SCAR392 My comment was more aimed at how it shows where Nintendo's priorities are at. Them not making a headset for their system shows what they think about online.
