The gist is Iwata admitting the other two systems (xbl and psn) are too far ahead and instead of doing a straight copy going slowly and getting things working. This while may be dissapointing is a really good idea. Itsbetter to move at your own pace than to hastily put features in and the 3DS shows they have learned.
Could you do us a favor and just link to the source material instead of quoting other sites' entire articles? It's not fair to take traffic away from them by stealing content and pasting it up someplace they probably don't even know about. :/

Well I think they should follow the leader this time around but only until they figure out how they want their own online infrastructure to work. I think they're playing it safe since they're barely getting into the whole online thing, but I think once they figure out how they want things to work they'll add their usual Nintendo spin on things.

I think they probably have spent a lot of time thinking about and designing how they want to put their Nintendo spin on the online gaming world. In fact they have been working closely with EA on it. Nintendo realizes they need help moving forward and are no longer to proud to accept it.
