it's mostly a matter of "Is the WiiU selling enough?" and/or "Can the developers be bothered to use the WiiU's Power proper?"

Steam Machines won't even make a dent in the normal console space. I'm still not sure who the product is aimed at other than being away for valve to accelerate their plans for Steam Linux since their scared of the Windows and Mac app stores.

I disagree but that wasn't the point I was making. I was saying that if performance was all that mattered then Nintendo wouldn't be the only ones in trouble here. The first Steam Machine prototype that has been shown is in terms of size between the PS4 and XBOne. It also has an R9 270, a significantly more powerful card, in it and is priced at $500US including the controller.

So if the Wii U is in trouble then surely SteamOS is doing the same to XBOne and PS4. If you think that's not the case and that it's all about the content and/or experience then cool. We agree then. The Wii U isn't in trouble for that reason.

For less than the price of any of these consoles, you could build a PC that is more "powerful" than that specific console.

I'm interested in seeing the $400 PC that is stronger than a PS4.

Feel free to post the build.

$400US? Ok, I'll give it a go

7850 beats the 7790 equivalent in the PS4 by some margin. $30 over budget, there you go. The fact of the matter is the PS4 is good value and about the same price as a PC of the same spec truth be told. The problem is last generation the consoles were well above what you'd expect at a similar price point. Given the extra flexibility of the PC gaming platform and the ability to push them to incredibly small form factors these days console gaming "for the graphics" is a much, much harder sell than it once was.

That's what I figured. I would have guessed between 450 and 500 so I am impressed with 430, but getting below 400 would be pretty difficult without cutting extreme corners (like skipping the case and using modeling clay to house this puppy)

Finding a $600 PC that was stronger than the PS3 was a lot easier.

While the original statement that you can get a better gaming PC for the price of the new consoles is hyperbole, I've always thought that people should lump in whatever they'd be spending for their basic computing needs into the hypothetical gaming computer alternative. I'm pretty sure most people don't only own consoles, right?

Keep in mind that console games cost $20 to $60 dollars. PC gamers get most of their games for around $10 or less. So if you filthy console peasants buy your $400 console and spend $60 on a few new releases each year, you're spending way more in the long run than you would if you were part of the PC gaming master race.

Well you could push it a bit lower if you went for more generic brands but in truth there aren't that many cases/motherboards/PSUs on the market that are cheaper and any good. Or, for example, if you were someone who could mass produce it as a pre-built system where you don't have to make a profit on every component. If I was asked to build a gaming PC at much less than that price the first thing I'd do is lower the bar and go just below what the PS4/XBOne can do so it wasn't a really cheap no-name components.

.... and the first thing I'd do if the price point was $100-200 higher would be getting a slightly better case/PSU. Really the price point you want to be at when building a machine that's overall good-value for gaming is more like $750-1000. For that money though you get something well ahead of the PS4/XBOne. When the last gen started that price point would be about the same spec as the then PS3/360. That's the difference this time.

This guy gets it.

CoD: Ghosts was £44.99 for consoles and on steam it's already gone in a sale to £22.99.

Console gaming is no where near cheaper than PC gaming.

For one, it's just a meme that you're taking too seriously. Secondly, what are you trying to say exactly?

The definition of a peasant is (peasant is usually an uneducated person of low social status) what your describing.

Only titles I buy from game are pre-owned ones that are a good deal. I shop around, Hot UK deals website is a good one. Not that I need to justify my purchase nature to an online stranger ofcause. PC released titles are cheaper, just how the market works.

The Wii U is powerful enough to receive any port from the ps4 or XBone, as long as the developer reduce the rendering resolution and turn off some particle and lighting effects. The problem lies not on the power but in the combination of the Wii U low sales, meaning less incentive to release new stuff, and the use of a Power PC instead of x86 CPU, which means the ports will need more work that they might not care to take.

Saw the pissed XBot/PSFan rant on the PC Gaming Master Race comments. However I can't take this thread seriously because I'm listening to BLUR right now

Is it powerful enough to sell? Yes.

So far as the meme, people typically say a PC costs more and so they don't buy it, hence, the term peasants being used to describe them.

Think I would go for a minimum 6 core AMD (Ideally the 8 core one) just because when it comes to the PC the minimum amount of effort possible is put in.

(And I have seen a demo of a straight port of a well optimised engine that runs like dirt even on a super expensive 4 core intel.)

I wish Nintendo were using full 1080p not upscaled 720p (For e.g 3D World). Sonic Generations at full 1080p looks great.

Thing about a PC is if stuff is stuttering from loading from the hard drive then you can use an SSD instead. On a console you are stuck with it.

Under the old system they would probably have put a 512GB SSD hoping the price would go down into these new systems and used a higher end processor.

If it was assumed an SSD was present that would make a big difference. (That assumption cannot be made for the PC right now).

I only interested in exclusives on consoles really. Don't know what will happen with stuff like Guardian Heroes that is on xbox live - I suspect it might go to iOS and support controllers. (The power is going up exponentially for the ipad and it is good in that it is still 4:3 which most of the old stuff needs or 3:4 which is even more annoying).

I will get a Wii U not sure when though. Probably when there is a good deal on the hardware. (I want to play Donkey Kong Country quite a bit really enjoyed the last one just hope they haven't nerfed the difficulty. If they have then I don't suppose I will bother for much longer).

The xbone/ps4 are even worse value though just the online costs (Without messing about) is a constant drain. It is annoying that Crimson Dragon is an exclusive though I really want it as I like the genre and they are pretty rare these days but getting a console for one game isn't worth it for me.

So just like last gen, games would have to be dumbed down

We saw how well that worked out
