Topic: Is the Wii brand in conflict with Nintendo's potential branding power?

I don't think the name is confusing. I think the reveal was confusing. The reveal of the Wii U left professional game journalist thinking it was just an add-on to Wii, so I get the confusion from casual consumers. I also can't stand all the internet rumors about the Wii U's power. There is so much negitivity surrounding the Wii U, it is going to be hard for Nintendo to break free of it. I think once a new Zelda is released people will forget how horrible the Wii U was handled.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

How do you know this? Did you approach everyone who was buying a 360 and ask them 'are you buying this because it's the new Xbox system'? If so, how come you didn't correct the confused people?

Or is this just another gross exaggeration that you 'believe' to be true, but have no evidence whatsoever to back it up?

With the massive Microsoft advertising campaign, the large in store displays, and the high price tag, I find it very hard to believe anyone would have mistakenly purchased a 360 thinking it was an Xbox One, let alone 'plenty' of them. I also have a hard time believing you 'saw' this happen 'plenty' of times either.

Damn, bro, give me a break. When I was holiday shopping, I saw plenty of peole buy Xbox 360s intead of Xbox Ones. The price difference made the decision easy for people who didn't know WTF they were buying and were buying it as a gift.

I saw at least 10 Xbox 360s get sold when Xbox One was right next to it.
They didn't think Xbox 360 was an Xbox One. They didn't know or care about the difference, so they bought the cheapest machine.

How do you know those people weren't buying the 360 because its the 360. Microsoft has two decent selling consoles on the Market so getting either one is a benefit to them. I'd say that having confusion the way you describe it isn't a bad thing especially since most of the people buying the 360 now are familes looking for stuff like Minecraft and disney Infinity.

In defense of @SCAR392, I had at least one friend who told me he was getting the Xbox One just because he 'had to' because it was the 'new Xbox'... I thought that was just about the worst reason to buy a game console ever... he didn't even seem enthusiastic about it, it was just 'I have to get it'... :/

It's not a bad thing. In the light of saying being confused between the Wii and Wii U, though, there are similar situations where people are still buying Xbox 360s over an Xbox One. They are still aware that Xbox One exists, but continue to buy the older machine.

Anyone who knows the difference between both machines probably wouldn't even buy the Xbox 360, because Xbox One is the new thing that can do more. The same goes for Wii U compared to Xbox 360 or PS3. I find it pretty hard to believe that anyone would either of those consoles over an 8th gen machine. By paying $50 more for a Wii U(over Xbox 360), you get the GamePad, free online, some of the games you would have bought elsewhere(such as DI), Wii BC, future support, newer games, etc.

That's why I'm saying that anyone that doesn't know the difference between 7th and 8th gen machines, is either unaware of the differences, or REALLY wants to play the older ganes available, some of which are still available on a newer machine.

@SCAR392

I'd recommend the 360/PS3 since they're still getting alot of support and if your fan of Japanese games the PS3 will still be good for the next two years or so. I['ve been seeing people come into my store to buy Minecraft and a 360 even if its not the hot new thing.

You're already paying more for an older machine that does less. If you know that Xbox One is the new console, you're more likely to throw down the extra $150, assuming you realize it's a newer console.

EDIT: I understand that Xbox 360 and PS3 are still good machines, but anyone that knows about these things, already either has them or has moved on the new consoles.

Why is that? You can get a new 360 for like $350 less, it has a library of hundreds of games, will still get new games for at least a couple more years, and software is cheaper for it. If you have never owned a 360, or want another one, it seems perfectly reasonable to buy one right now. I almost bought my first PS3 a few weeks ago based on the fact that there are several games on it at I would like to play, and because I wanted a new bluray player for the bedroom. I ended up not getting one though because I could save $120 buying a standalone player and I don't even have enough time to play all my games on my Wii-U or 3DS anyway, let alone a PS3.

If the Xbox One could play 360 games, you would have a point, but as it stands they are both entirely separate products, so it's not surprising at all that people are still buying 360's. It's hardly an indicator that the consumer is confused by the name, which was the whole point of this thread.

Given neither the XBOX ONE, nor the PS4 are backwards-compatible and have tiny software libraries I have no problem believing people would choose the older machines.

I actually think that changed with the Wii. People no longer just referred to it as "The Nintendo", as they used to. The marketing was so strong with the commercials and the "Mii's", and I think people just liked saying it, as it was a strange word, that it eclipsed the fact that it was a Nintendo console. No one I know says let's play Nintendo anymore.

@gage_wolf I know tons of people who refer to (the handhelds at least) as 'Nintendo's... :/

Beyond that, I even once met a guy who was so out of touch with this that he didn't even recognize my DS lite... his guess was a 'PSP'... :/

But the 'reveal' took place like two years ago in a room full of reporters. It has no bearing whatsoever on consumers today (who don't even know what E3 is anyway) who walk into a store and have no idea that they can't play SM3DW on the Wii they have at home. The reveal was botched, but its now the name/branding that is still causing issue, be it confusion or preconceived notions (Wii 'sucked' so the Wii-U must too).

Those people got their information about the console when people didn't know it was a console. Some places were reporting it as a WIi Add-On. They get that info and don't need to look up anything else because they know it is just a WIi Add-On. That is the problem. Then those people who don't follow the industry are going to be stuck with that in mind. If I hear there is a new Nicholas Sparks book I assume it is a romance, I am not going to hunt for information because the first information I got I made up my mind on if I am going to get it. When big events like E3 happen more than the game Industry takes notice, part of the problem is that things change but wit less coverage. I still run into people who think Xbox One needs to be online all the time.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.

Interestingly, I bought the Wii late in its lifecycle and for the most part didn't like it. But I saw the commercials for the Gamepad and thought it was really cool. Took me a few months to pull the trigger (got it in April), but I did. BUT....the reason why i was even interested in it was b/c my step son's dad was going to get him a "new Wii." I thought he meant "The New Wii...." So he comes home from his dad with a Wii. I was disappointed and decided to get it for myself.

So I think at least part of the problem was just creating awareness about it and then showing what it can do. I doubt I would have thought twice about getting one if i didn't go through this.
