Exactly rob. The sole reason I am buying the Wiiu is playing on the gamepad when others want to watch the TV. I am among the vastly growing market of a gamer who has a family. With the gamepad I can continue playing games while others are trying to watch TV and all. I cannot stress how massive this feature is and for me its the "killer app".
That's what I use my ipad for. I can't see myself wanting to play on the small gamepad screen, I'd probably end up waiting until I can use the TV anyway.
The gamepad is the thing that's turning me off the most, so I'd say no.
I'll hope all the good games let you use the nintendo GCN remake controller.

I like how the gamepad feels in your hands honestly. Can't say it's the main attraction for me, I don't really have an attraction yet, but I think it feels nice. Not nearly as heavy as I was expecting it to be, I like.

I think it has to be (for so many applications besides games) but I'm not worried about the GamePad affecting normal play. Which I guess it what you're getting at.
I don't expect every game to be Zombi U. I would expect the majority of games to utilise the screen inconsequentially. That being as an optional extra, so that its possible to play with the Pro controller, or with the TV off function on the GamePad.
I've not researched this. But I'm guessing the launch window games reflect this?
@Towels: No, actually, I was talking about the lack of significant innovation with it right now, hence it being less of the main attraction in comparison to other things, e.g. online system and such. The GamePad hasn't shown its full potential yet, and other things with the Wii U seem to be taking the light.
I don't think a second screen affects gameplay, really, especially not with a game like Zombi U. Having such intricate real-time control strategises the game to a realistic extent. It's very intuitive.
Oh well in that case (and I'm sorry if I sound like a grump) no. I simply don't expect that much creativity from the devs nowadays. So I don't think, from a gameplay point of view, that it will be the main attraction of the console.
@Towels: No, you didn't sound like a grump at all.
Personally, I think if we don't see some devs really attempting at a creative effort with the GamePad (which I don't think is likely, given its positive reception with development and utilisation so far), then Nintendo will most probably pioneer the utmost innovation of their own hardware with all the big hits inbound for E3 2013. It's a no-brainer.
I just don't believe it's the main attraction for quite a few people as of now.
