Topic: Is now the right time to buy a Wii U? (Wii owner here)

I have a Wii and a 108" 1080 projection screen. I admittedly do not play as much as if like (it's been a few months). I still have to finish Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy and play through Skyward Sword and Galaxy 2 (haven't played yet), then I've probably only logged 20 hours with Mario Kart, so I know there is plenty of playability left there.

Here is my question. A good deal is up for the Wii U with Mario 3D World. I'll buy it if there is a chance my games will definitely look a bit better with the Wii U.

I've read some things about anti-aliasing, color reproduction and frame rates, but this topic hasn't really been touched on since the Wii U release.

My low usage and cost are a secondary concern, but if I won't see a difference, I'd have no problem keeping the Wii until I've played through the preciously mentioned games and grab a Wii U next year.

I also have an enormous backlog of PS3 titles so I haven't even thought about getting rid of that. No "next gen" consoles for me yet.

I'm only really interested in Mario, Mario Kart, Star Fox and Zelda titles.

Thoughts?

If you don't care for third party games not coming to the Wiiu, then the console is great for you and it's the right time to buy it.

The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed: Revelations & Watch Dogs 2

If you're interested in Nintendo's first party titles, definitely get the Wii U. It's freaking fun.

I don't think wii games look better on wii u. I'm currently playing through Twilight Princess and it looks pretty average, graphically-wise. Keep in mind I've never played the wii version so I might not be the best person to compare but I don't think there is a difference?
Therefore, if you still have wii games to play and nothing what might be a system seller for you then I'd suggest you to wait till you're done with galaxies/zeldas. The system might be even cheaper next year.
Don't get me wrong, Wii U is a great console and I'd highly recommend you to get it, but if you have wii games you still want to finish then I suppose upgrade could wait a bit longer in your case

So i recently got a wii u with 8 games -inluding M3DW and zelda Wind waker- as a PC gamer i didnt expect great graphics but games like mario kart 8, zelda wind waker and mario 3d world took me by surprise. On the other hand buying a wii u pro controller is a must b/c the gamepad isnt comfy, feels cheap, plus the battery only lasts 4 hours.

if you want better graphics then go for it

Your old Wii games will not look any better on the Wii U. Mario 3D World will look better than anything on the Wii. MK8 looks and sounds truly amazing compared to MK Wii, and with the added content in the MK8 DLC it also becomes the largest Mario Kart ever in terms of content.

I had a "I'm mainly interested in platformers on the Wii U" focus before, but then I bought Pikmin 3 while waiting for the delayed Rayman Legends. That was a real eye-opener for me personally, and I discovered there are so many high-quality titles on the Wii U that are really great if I just keep an open mind. I have now redefined my focus to "I'm only interested in great games on the Wii U".

If you like nintendo games it s a great console to have, plenty of excellent titles... off screen and browser make it a perfect object for your living room.....

Expect past gen graphics and total lack of 3rd parties support, though...

Heh, Well the games'll defiantly look better on the WiiU, I can tell you that! Though I don't know about the Wii titles. I could say wait a bit since the 3rd party situations retail wise is next to dead at this point on this console but since you don't care bout that and since you currently owning a PS3, Good job for keeping the PS3 btw. . By all means, dive in! And check out the Nintendo eshop on that bad boy when you get comfortable with it..

Best Wishes, Captain Toad.

Was Mariobro4. No, I'm not taking off my backpack...it's important.

Sounds like you really enjoy Nintendo titles and you game on occasion, but not necessarily frequently, if that's the case............yeah, buy a Wii U.

Btw, you do know you can do a system transfer between the Wii and the Wii U, which will transfer your save files to the Wii U, so you can continue playing your old Wii games on the Wii U?

TC, I'm in a very similar boat to you. I have a Wii and PLENTY to play on it, as well as a 360 with a massive backlog.

And here's what I'd tell you, give the Wii U's games a try (either with friends or at demos tations). I've tried playing Super Mario 3D World, NintendoLand, Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, NSMBU, and Rayman Legends, and the only one that impressed me was NintendoLand. So even though, from looking at trailers and gameplay, those games looked pretty fun, I wound up disappointed, and I won't be picking up the system for a while.

Now if you like the games you try a lot, absolutely go for a Wii U. Else, you'll be fine with a Wii and PS3 for a while.

If you like Nintendo's first party line, certainly. There are also a couple of decent third party games, but for the foreseeable future third party support is going to be weak.
I've had the system for the year, and I haven't regretted it. I currently have 14 games for it, and 4 downloaded games. I always have fun with it.

As for if Wii games look better on Wii U... I think they have an extra pop to them thanks to the Wii U using HDMI, but that's about it.

Most people completely missed the OP's point. Yes, Wii games look better on Wii U on a larger HD screen, Xenoblade especially. So, yeah the upgrade is worth it as long as you have some extra money in your pocket.

Not to mention that it's over HDMI so for a lot of sets the input lag will be less on the Wii U playing Wii games than it was on the Wii. Also off-TV play with Wii games, even if you have to use another controller, is another nice benefit. Early on you did lose Wii Connect 24 but all of the online features for the Wii are completely dead now. So meh.

Also as far as your backlog goes. My Wii backlog is still pretty bad, Including Wii Ware I have almost 20 games on the Wii that I haven't finished yet. Mostly because I couldn't be bothered getting everything setup just to play a game I'm not that into. Especially when it was a game I got for almost nothing. On the Wii U there are only two games I haven't finished yet. Child of Light and The Wonderful 101... and I'm still playing the latter. The Game Pad and off-TV play has made it easier to work through my backlog I've found.

I think it's a great time to buy a Wii U. There's a TON of games that you can get steeply discounted on Amazon. Donkey Kong, Pikmin, New Super Mario Bros. U, Wii Sports Club, Wind Waker- these are very, very solid titles and then you have Smash Bros. and MK8, which pretty much justify the purchase alone. There's some very good indie games too. Throw in the 2015 line up is looking really awesome, with a new title coming out each month.

(Could've sworn that I replied... but don't see that post anymore so will respond again.)

Wii U doesn't make Wii games look better, but the HDMI connection should look a bit sharper than composite/component cables.

Off-screen play for Wii titles can be pretty cool if you don't mind the small screen and need for a separate Wii remote to control the game.

If you are mostly playing Wii games, then there isn't a meaningful reason to upgrade right now. The price of a Wii U (around $200 for a console, usually with game) is pretty easy to justify for most gamers and games are often available cheap if you look around - the only question is whether prices will continue to drop before you "need" the upgrade.

If you're running the Wii through component cable at 480p you'll get the same resolution over the Wii U, if you're using the standard cables that the Wii came with then you will see a better resolution and picture clarity when playing through the Wii U

Thank you for all the responses. I've been playing Mario Kart Wii like crazy the last couple of days.

I didn't realize Nintendo killed the online play for Mario Kart (bad move, Nintendo). If I buy a Wii U, can I play the Mario Kart Wii online, or do I need the new Mario Kart?

I really think I could play Mario Kart Wii for quite a while longer, but I'd like to play against real people, more of a challenge. Although there was a lot of cheating the last time I played online.

Once again, Nintendo didn't kill the online. The company whose servers were used for the DS/Wii online got shut down. This obviously resulted in server shutdown, so no more online. Nintendo had nothing to do with this.

Everything can change, but I'm never changing who I am
