collectathon platformers are probably the only genre I can think of with no redeeming features. (There is not a single one I like ever - any other genre that I would say I generally don't like i can think of a counter example which I do other than this one).
I...I...I...
I have never disagreed with something more in my life.
The sense of adventure, creativity, exploration, puzzle solving, fun gameplay, replayability in good made collections are unmatched. Sorry the Saturn was dead when Rare was releasing those absolute masterpiece platformers for the Nintendo 64.
Not really. We're talking the guys who made a system called the 3DS for goodness sake.
Jokes aside, they're really not. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, New Super Mario Bros series and the recent Kirby games are the only real 2D examples of note in the last few years, and those are from series that were either made to be purely 2D or that never got many 3D installments in general. They''re still making lots of big 3D platformers and adventure games, even though the collectathons are lacking since Rare's departure.
Oh, and on another note...
Have you looked at A Hat in Time and Lobodestroyo? Those seem to be the kind of games you'd like.
No, they don't. It's all action adventures now, and the platforming in a lot of those games has been really dumbed down or removed completely since generation 7.

yeah, it really is. Other than the occasional sequel from Sony, what else is there? I'll grant you Sonic (especially the recent one, which is more based on platforming than normal), but the last couple of 3D Marios half the time are just 2d levels with a little 3D space. And anything else that comes around that looks like a 3D platformer is just a beat-em-up with some platforming added in. Boo!
