Topic: Is Nintendo saving Gamecube, Wii Virtual Console for their next console?

President of Nintendo of America Reggie is quoted saying that it is very difficult to make Gamecube and Wii virtual console.

Another leader at Nintendo — I don't know which one — confirmed they are already looking ahead past the Wii U. Now don't get me wrong I know it is normal for gaming companies to plan ahead. However, I feel the Wii U is going to suffer the same fate as the Gamecube, i.e. short life cycle. Nintendo quickly dropped the Gamecube like an ugly girlfriend for the prettier Wii.

But the point of this thread is: Is Nintendo not gonna put Gamecube and Wii Virtual Console on the Wii U? and, instead, save it for their next console? A console, maybe, with a one terabyte hard drive? Most Gamecube and Wii games especially are > 1 GB. There is only so much room on the Wii U's 32 GB drive. Maybe Nintendo didn't intend to have a big online marketplace for the Wii U since they're barely starting out with the Nintendo Network. Me, personally, I feel the Wii U is more than capable of Gamecube and Wii VC. Perhaps the big "N" is just being straight up lazy.

At this point, I could care less about VC for Gamecube and Wii. Having simple downloadable games like we have with a couple Wii games is sufficient. I don't really need the VC features like save stating, but control mapping is a good feature.

To be honest, I'm surprised we haven't seen N64 games yet. That's probably next on the roster.

Also, if you haven't noticed already, Nintendo hates hard drives. The Wii and Wii U don't have a spinning hard drive. They use flash memory. Hard drives generate more heat and are more prone to fail. They're not going to put a terabyte hard drive in their next console. I can guarantee they're going with flash memory again.

They are being quite lazy. The Wii U's VC is almost dead. Where are the N64 titles?

I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

by then it could be big enough and cheap enough for a 250 gb or 500 gb most likely 250 gb right nowif I look at it around 2018-2019 they could update the Wii u model with a 64 gb (solid state hard drive) flash memory

FWIW, there's a Wii U VC forum. How about posting your threads there?

On a side note. Why do Americans say "I could care less about something..". I am British and our version of that saying is "I couldn't care less about something.." i.e You care the least amount possible, i.e you do not care. If you could care less, then you at that point in time care to some level. I digress

I agree with Mr Brewsky. N64 games will be next. In fact I am hoping for an announcement next Nintendo Direct.

Because people don't actually pay attention to what they say. It drives me nuts and I'm an American. The correct phrase is "I couldn't care less" in the U.S. too.

For the record, I did type "I couldn't care less" but it autocorrected "couldn't" and I didn't notice. I have no idea why that happened.

Ah the curse of auto correct. How many times have you made me look stupid. Just a few minutes ago on Push Square I wanted to say I am happy with my Playstation 4 and instead it auto corrected to Plantation 4. Next person asked what am I in the south or something and have a cotton plantation. lol.

Ahhh pesky auto correct. I have seen people say could care less a lot. That explains it. (Btw, I am not a grammar Nazi or anything) WOW! You have 4 plantations.....

It's an interesting point. Maybe they're doing it because they'd rather the difference between the virtual console games and current ones is more pronounced (aka the Wii/Gamecube games have to look much worse than their current generation offerings).

Then again, it could just be incompetence. Nintendo's attitude when it comes to Virtual Console games is pathetic, especially how long they take to release any of them.

Thanks to people experimenting with home-brew (and them releasing Wii games as digital downloads) we now know that is complete BS. The code runs without the need for emulation, so it's just a line we're being fed if it was said.

I think it's just risk aversion on Nintendo's part, they won't put in what they see as a speculative investment into something the see as having an uncertain and unproven return. I'd rather they'd have faith in it and go ahead regardless like their core series (Mario, Zelda, MK, Smash etc. which always do well and make money even if the platform is struggling), but I think the commercial record of the Wii U has reduced investment in a lot of areas and slowed things down or killed them outright. I doubt at this point we'll ever see GC or the N64 on VC for the Wii U.

If they choose PowerPC architecture for their next console I think we'll see GC games on it, if not who knows? Depends on how successful it is.

Well bear in mind, Reggie doesn't know what he's talking about. He's just feeding you the line they've given him.
Getting wii games working obviously isn't that big a deal.

I've given up on GameCube & N64 VC. I don't think they even care about their VC service.

Why do people have to generalize Americans based off of one person. I hate it when people do that. We're not all the same. Just because one American does something, doesn't mean all Americans do it.

Hey now. Don't throw your pacifier out of your stroller. I said Americans. The s at the end of a word signifies plural i.e more than one! I used the plural because this was not the first time I had witnessed the misuse of the expression. You were lucky / unlucky to bear witness to the moment that promted me to ask the question. Every time I saw it the person happened to be American. Anyhoo, another less touchy feely person replied and said it was the auto correct so the mystery has been solved I appreciate everyone hates being tarred by the same brush....but there are a lot better things to be offended by than this subject. You should care less! (Erm...better check I used that expression correctly..I confuse easily O.< )

I've been fed up for a while now regarding Nintendo withholding releases for the VC that I think I would rather see that feature nixed for their next console. They've had two generations to really push that feature's content, and they're failing in my opinion, in fact, I think they have handled the Wii U worse than the Wii just solely based on the eShop not having gifting. Have any employee that may be working with the Virtual Console help with putting out new releases on the eShop, as that seems a much stronger area for Nintendo and developers in general.

I hope that they continue to stick with flash memory. If there's one thing I love about Nintendo hardware, it's the fact that their failure rate is byfar the lowest in comparison to the other consoles on the market. Sure, there are drawbacks (such as there being only 32GB of internal memory), but at least if the external hard drive fails, it's only the hard drive that will need replacing.

Not sure the Wii U has the power to emulate Wii games. GC, probably.

Well if you look at the prices flash is halving in price about every one and a half years. So, in theory, the 512MB in the Wii cost about the same as 8GB of flash would have at the time of the Wii U's launch. If you do the same with the 32GB Wii U and the end of this year you get 128GB. If you project that out to when a Wii U successor is more likely? 250GB becomes affordable, comfortably.

And for perspective, since 2006 flash has gotten about 60x cheaper but 2.5" HDDs have got only about 10x cheaper.....
