Topic: Is Nintendo better at making / supporting home consoles or portables?

What do you think? I tend to believe that portable games gel with Nintendo's design philosophy better (fun factor and accessibility being important), although I doubt few will argue that the home consoles have the superior software.

Nintendo always blows away the competition (not counting phones) in handhelds. I would say handhelds

It was better when handheld and console was separate.

Now handheld just gets the old technology at 30fps. (NSMB2 / Kirby Triple Deluxe / DKCR 3D etc etc) with very few exceptions (ALBW / 3D Land / Kid Icarus. Or just ports of old games.

Up until the DS the handhelds had everything made for them separate. (Or they were so good I cannot tell they weren't which is ok as well).

There is more on the PSP I want than the 3DS. (Really hammers the point home playing GBA games on the Wii U they are genuinely good games).

Yoshi's New Island and NSMB2 are rather bland, mediocre at best, but I have to disagree with you on Kirby: Triple Deluxe and DKCR 3D, I think both of those titles are worth the investment, and for the most part, both titles have a good amount of depth.

Agree that Nintendo needs to release GBA titles on the 3DS's VC, it's getting a bit ridiculous.

Handhelds have been way more successful and consistent for Nintendo than their console line. Handhelds for sure.

And now the 3DS gets mostly exclusive games...so what's the problem?

handheld easily.

Mainly because Japanese 3rd parties actually still care about handhelds and thus 3DS gets 3rd party games (though next year seems to be ****ING FINALLY when they're putting decent and consistent localization towards those games)

Non-binary, demiguy, making LPs, still alive

Doesn't matter whether it is exclusive it matters whether it is designed from the ground up for the hardware or not.

reusing Wii stuff and having 30fps because of it is not good. (By comparison I have no issues with the DS NSMB / Canvas Curse etc).

I actually prefer DKCR 3D, waggle free.

In terms of handhelds, they are basically king at getting alot of content and good content. The PS Vita is their only competition and they aren't really keeping up right now. Smartphones being 3DS' main competition is pretty telling, actually.

In terms of consoles, it's give or take. They do some things better or more than the competition, but so does their competition in other areas. Nintendo absolutely cannot compete with things like Kinect or media, so they draw attention elsewhere. That's always how they've done things, and that's why Wii U supports things like Netflix, because you can get media services without Nintendo straight up just throwing the codecs to run physical media outside of video games.

Reusing like 2-3 games is bad? Wut? As far as I remember, DKCR 3D is the only major Wii game that was "reused"...

Doesn't matter whether the levels are different or not just whether the technology was made originally for the 3DS or the Wii. Wii game engine (NSMB2/Kirby) at 30fps is just as bad as a 30fps port (DKCR3D).

(Funnily enough if they patch the games to run on the new 3DS properly at 60fps I will be ecstatic - maybe not but pretty pleased).

The N64 Remakes are fine. (Never designed to be 60fps to begin with).

Both NSMB2 and Kirby run smoothly IMO, although I'll agree that DKCR 3D can stutter a bit at times, regardless, I think your complaints about 30 FPS (the universal average benchmark for home consoles) belong somewhere near the 1 percent of 3DS users,........what's next? Smash Bros. for 3DS isn't in 1080p / 60 fps?

Back in the good ol' N64 days, we averaged about 20 frames of untextured polygons covered in fog per a second, but did we complain!?, nah, we manned up and we liked it.

Kirby was solid though. The only game I noticed with problems was DKCR 3D

DKCR didn't have waggle controls (at least, not in the sense that you could mindlessly shake the controller to win).

You had to shake the Wiimote to roll, the 3DS feels more natural / comfortable, just my opinion.

Fair enough. I don't think motion controls were necessary, but I don't think DKCR should be lumped in with the games that poorly implemented motion controls.
