Well I'm a college student in Nursing and I have hardly any time to play if anything I'd say go for a 3DS it's portable, the games are amazing, and you can easily play in short bursts personally I have a year and a half left before I graduate and until then I'm holding off on a Wii U because I don't have the time for it. Also it gives me a chance to see how well things pick up for the system. Also if you consider getting a system don't use the internet for advice come on that's a given rule not to mention any website is full of biased people (NL=Nintendo (not the staff just a lot of the users), Gamespot = 360 fanboys all around, and almost any other big website is full of PS360 fanboys combined.

Agreed...somewhat. Of course, most of the people are gonna be biased because this is a Nintendo focused website. BUT.. I will say that even the most extreme Nintendo fanboys I have ran into over time aren't as cruel and harsh as PS3/360 fanboys are. Hey diehard Nintendo fans! How many times have you heard something like this from a PS3/360 fanboy? "Nintendo is for kids! Only kids can enjoy the games Nintendo makes!" "I wish Nintendo games were multiplatform... I hate Nintendo but I would love Zelda on my PS4/Xbox One!" Let's not forget the recent slams against Nintendo from fanboys... "Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive??? NOOOOO!!!!! This isn't fair!! I won't buy a Wii U! I refuse!!!" Or "Sonic Lost World is exclusive to 3DS/Wii U.... NOO!!! I can't belive this!!! Why would Sega team up with Nintendo?!". I know I'm drifting off topic here but I feel like I gotta say this. I've ran into some extreme Nintendo fanboys in the past and this is basically all they say: "I prefer a memorable game full of dynamic gameplay than a cinematic story". Most extreme Nintendo fanboys find games like Last of Us/Uncharted stupid and incredibly flawed (I don't think that way). I'm not saying that Nintendo fanboys can't be cruel but I will say that Nintendo supporters hardly ever say the same messed up things I've heard PS3/360 fanboys say about Nintendo. So here's my last thing.... The people on this site will still (generally) give a good answer

I say it just comes down to the games. Look at the games line-ups for the future of each system and see which suits you.

@Blastoise you're definitely right about those PS360 fanboys but in my experience nothing beats the 360 D****

The only thing that should matter is the games! Wii U will get Wind Waker HD (September 20th/October 4th), Sonic Lost World, Super Mario 3D World (November 22nd), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (December 6th). Pikmin is out now and looks amazing, there's The Wonderful 101, but I don't really know much about it because it didn't get my attention. Well, I think that are all the games comming for Wii U this year (I don't know if I forgot some), and let's not forget about Super Smash Bros for WiiU and Mario Kart 8 next year.
As for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, yeah, they have a lot more power and some cool exclusives. I can't say much about these two because I prefer Nintendo and their awesome exclusives.
Also a Wii U is cheaper, $300 starting September 20th (Deluxe Model) with a sexy Wind Waker HD gamepad, the game, and Hyrule Historia!
Well, it's your choice.

Just buy it. There will be games you want. Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, and X seem to be the best Wii U has to show for now.
3D World and Sonic look to be a pretty big fanfare or for kids, mainly. Pokemon.

CoD Ghosts will be there with the GamePad and Wii remote. Rayman Legends just came out. Lego City is a decent open world game. Zelda will be out in a bit...

I think Nintendo has some good games on Wii U. I have a bad outlook on PS4 in terms of exclusives(and lack of camera or Move support), but I think Xbox One looks good.

Xbox One will have Dead Rising 3(which is hopefully as defining, but better than DR1). Halo will come out eventually. CoD Ghosts is gonna be on that as well(Kinect?). Ryse. You can develop directly on the console. The controller seems to be the best standard controller.

Blah, blah, blah...
Just choose one. I just think Sony could/should be able to handle their platforms much better than they do, but it's your decision.

I already have a Wii U, BTW. I think it's good.

if you like Nintendo exclusives, then go for it. PS4 and Xbox One are becoming more like PCs, and of course PCs are better in many ways. Sony does have some good exclusive games however, and I've never really been interested by Microsoft's exclusives (not a Halo/Gears of War fan, and whatever else there is).

So basically, if you're looking forward to games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Zelda, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, maybe even Metroid and Starfox in the future, definitely get a Wii U. I've always gotten Nintendo consoles for their exclusives. All other multi-platform games I play on PC, and I play Sony exclusives (Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, God of War, etc.) on PS3.

While we can't obviously decide for you we can at least give you some suggestions, so here's mine: i got a Wii U some months ago and all I can say is that I love it. I don't even consider xone or ps4, simply because ad weird sa it may seem, I don't have fun playing those games sa much as I have with Nintendo games. First party titles have always been wonderful, and there's a LOT of them coming, as well as second and some third party.
Considering you have a decent laptop, you will be alle to play most next gen games on it, so you should get a Wii U
Also, with more people owning and supporting the systrm, we'll hopefully get more games I, for one, to show Ubisoft my support and thankfullness for bringing AC4 on Wii U, preordered the Buccaneer Ltd

@Blastoise You haven't seen the whole "COD is for 12 year olds" thing from Nintendo fanboys? Nintendo fanboys are guilty of some of the thing you've said they aren't guilty of there.

Then there must be alot of 20 - 40 year olds playing COD wearing really tight pants if my ears serve me right

Yeah... I haven't really heard Nintendo fanboys say that before but I will say that COD's fanbase is full of a variety of ages but... .young teenager is the dominant age group. And hey! Which is worse: "Bayonetta 2 is a Wii U exclusive? NOOO!!!! This isn't fair! C'mon, Platinum Games! Don't do this to Sony/Microsoft!! Nintendo can't handle mature games!!!" OR.... "COD is for 12 year olds"??? They both are wrong and stupid but c'mon now... Nintendo gets so much hate that its not even funny.

Go on Youtube and try to find a video/trailer for Bayonetta 2, Sonic Lost World or even Lego: City Undercover. There are LITERALLY people upvoting people who say: "I wish this wasn't a Wii U exclusive.... Nintendo sucks". Go ahead! TRY IT. You will see people upvoting other people who trash Nintendo.. in other words... there are people who actually praise other people who trash Nintendo. NOW go on Youtube and look up a PS4/PS3/Xbox 360/Xbox One exclusive... Look at the comments. Do you see any Nintendo fans going crazy and saying: "COME TO WII U! These other platforms suck!". No, you don't. So what's my point? Nintendo gets the most hate and a Nintendo fanboy (usually) isn't worse than a Sony/Microsoft fanboy.

I wouldn't buy, not until I knew that Wii U had/could run the games I want to. (My own splurge was only because I had to get my WiiWare and VC purchases safe from a failing Wii.) Don't look to the future catalogue as a certainty - look primarily at what games already are there, then if the overall impression of the future line-up looks interesting enough even if any, say, 75% of those titles end up being utter crud or something you wouldn't care one whit about. Otherwise, you'll be lining yourself up for another Aliens: Colonial Marines: games that fail to deliver in a massive way (or are just cancelled altogether).

mamp also had a good point about this being a bad place to get unbiased opinions. In my view, people clamoring how future Nintendo first-party games are all perfect, worth the purchase and going to save the console are brand loyalists and believe that Nintendo's major brand games are never ever bad. (Remember Metroid: Other M.)

Agreed..somewhat BUT Metroid: Other M is one bad first-party game compared to a bunch of amazing first-party games. You can't blame people for having faith in Nintendo that their IPs will help the Wii U. Nintendo has proved over and over that their IP makes tons of money because they are usually must buys.

Actually, depending how how things go, you might want a Wii U the most.
Nintendo will have their exclusives, no doubt, and 3rd parties are pretty likely to have most of their games on Wii U this gen.

CoD will probably make the cut, regardless, and EA knows they need Nintendo. All the games Wii U will get will be a PS4 port, probably. That's alot easier than developing from scratch(besides the GamePad and Wii remote).

I think this generation of game consoles will play out similarly to 6th gen, where all the consoles were pretty equal in terms of support.

I guess you could wait to see how things go, but I'd be pretty content with what's already been announced for a good year or so.

I've owned the Wii U since launch and I'm enjoying it. In my own experience, I don't have as much time either to play games like I used to. But in the time that I do, it feels good to turn on this gaming machine and play for a few hours.

This is what made me get a Wii U in no particular order:

  • Monster Hunter Ultimate
  • Transfer data from Wii to Wii U(vc titles, save data, etc)
  • Off tv play
  • More virtual console
  • Wii disc backwards compatibility (my Wii had stopped reading discs)
  • Nintendo franchises (in HD)

I'm sure there is more, but I can't gather my thoughts.

Besides Mario, Zelda and other popular franchises that Nintendo is relying on at the moment, look at the other games available now that you can play on Wii U:

  • Pikmin 3
  • Earthbound (vc title, but still... it's Earthbound)
  • Game and Wario
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us
  • Rayman Legends
  • ZombiU
  • Lego City Undercover

That's seven titles, just one more of your projection for a years worth of games.

And there are more good games coming down the pipeline in 2014, which is around the corner. Not to mention it just got a markdown of $50 for the premium set, it's good to know that other folks still on the fence about it can get it cheaper than what I paid for a basic set. Should I have waited? Maybe, but regardless, I've enjoyed my gaming for the past months.

I have decided, if I can afford it, I am going with a Wii U. I have a gaming PC, now I just need my Nintendo fix. I also like the I can go back and play Wii games I never played.

As @ mamp said 3DS is always a good choice. I love my Wii U and i think this is a great time to buy one, good exclusives already out and more on the horizon. If you have a decent PC then you shouldn't care about third party games since we all know every time a steam sale comes around we can get what we want upto 75% off .

Well, I'll probably go with a Wii U in the end. I'm still gonna have the X360.

If you know for sure your gonna need some 3rd party lovin' then don't even bother with a Wii U at this point.

From somebody who likes Nintendo, but missed a few systems- I think you should without a doubt go with the Wii U. I got mine back in April. Don't worry about this silly notion of there not being enough games. I got mine in April and have zero regrets. Enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. I have:

Sonic and All Stars Transformed
NintendoLand
Tekkin
Injustice
Mass Effect
SuperMario Bros.
Madden
Batman Armored Edition
Scribblenaughts
2k13 NBA
Need For Speed
Zombieu
Monster Hunter
Pikman 3
Assasin's Creed
Nano Assault
Zen Pinball- Marvel and Star Wars
Trine

There's not a bad game on there- and I got most discounted by at least a third or half off. I don't even have time to play all these- and then there's all these new games coming out.

@rockodoodle For what it's worth, the original poster still seems to have an XBOX 360, and most of the games you listed are also on the 360 (and in most cases, superior on the 360. Even Need For Speed, a game optimized for Wii U, is arguably better on the 360, since one can organize games much more easily on that system. Also, analogue triggers. Still, off-TV play is great, although for that game in particular it is a bit much in my opinion, as I own it on Wii U). If we take away all of those games that are on that particular system, we are left with:
Nintendoland
Mario Bros. U
Scribblenauts
ZombiU
Monster Hunter
Pikmin 3
Nano Assault

Now, that's not abysmal by any means But it's not exactly inundating by any means either. With where the current poster is at, I can only really give a recommendation for the Wii U if he/she likes Nintendo games a lot or if Off-TV play is a very enticing proposition. And it very well could be. The college environment would definitely make Off-TV play useful.
