My prediction and thoughts on Wii U:

I think Nintendo is going to show new Zelda footage at E3 and it's going to change everything. Here's why...

A new HD Zelda is going to get gamers talking again and wanting the Wii U. Nintendo is going to avoid any kind of specific release date which will leave people talking and guessing about it. They know they have to bring something special to E3 this year. Not just something for their fans but for every gamer - something we all want - a beautiful new HD Zelda that is a show stopping event.

The good news is they can also take the time to say, 'Buy a Wii U this year and get a FREE digital copy of Zelda when it comes out.' Easy. Just give it away. Also, if you already own a Wii U - you'll get it free too for being an early adopter and supporting Nintendo. It's too tempting and too easy not do it and I think a massive amount of gamers will pick it up and it will be that last push to get them to own the console. It keeps current fans happy and it will create a LOT more. Furthermore, all the new Wii U owners will enjoy a decent library of games and start buying them while they wait for Zelda.

I would have to say Nintendo wouldn't find this 'tempting', nor 'easy to do'.

First off, I'm pretty sure we already know that Zelda U is going to be at E3, this year. I was under the impression this had been confirmed, already. Second, no way in heck is Nintendo desperate enough to give away one of their most valuable games of this generation for free. They might make an "early releases" bundle with all those games that they thought were going to be big (and in some ways, they kinda have, already), but there's no way they'll be giving out Zelda U for free to anyone. Even a discount would be out of the question.

Fun fact: I pop into my local walmart once a week just to peek and see if they have any Wii U games on sale. They haven't had the console itself in stock for over a month and I highly doubt that it's because they are selling out during the week. This is the mid-south United States and if you can't get face time in walmart, you are toast. The rednecks here literally live out of that store. I'm curious to see if MK8 gets some systems back on the shelf.

I live in the south as well. I don't hit the video games section there much, but at the Walmart closest to me, it seems like they've grown the Wii U section over the last few months, and they seem to always have a couple consoles in stock. That's not saying much though. The Wii U section is still only has about half the space the other systems have, but thankfully it's making a turnaround.

My local amazon.ca and ebgames.ca have quite a few Wii Us in stock.

Strange, last time I was at my closest wal-mart, probably one to two weeks ago, they had systems and a demo unit out for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Or maybe it also did other things I just remember trying that game out there.

everything's good and it'll be that way forever!

About the retail presence, this is getting a bit ridiculous isn't it?

The one non-specialist major store I tend to frequent that stocks games has a pretty large Nintendo section. The Nintendo part of that store all up is almost half of the total gaming space. They have maybe 4m of just Wii U space that's about 1.8m high plus a demo kiosk. They have about twice that for 3DS including a 3DS demo unit. Then about the same again (~4m, 1.8m high) for Wii and DS content they're trying to clear. So all up 16m of shelving just for the Nintendo stuffs. Then from memory about 12m total for PS4, PS3, PSP, Vita, 360, XBOne and PC plus another 4m length just for Skylanders, Disney Infinity and so on.

So, overly dramatic maybe with the dire state of the shelving space situation? Or maybe Australian retailers are just particularly fond of Nintendo.

I would have to say Nintendo wouldn't find this 'tempting', nor 'easy to do'.

I should probably correct myself. I don't think it's likely to happen. It's more like wishful thinking.

I don't necessarily think it's devaluing Zelda at all. I think it would be a bold marketing choice but nothing out of the realm of possibility. Games are often bundled at discounts. In a way, this isn't much different. Perhaps if not for free, some other discount or eShop credit towards the purchase?

What Nintendo has to do is ignite interest in the Wii U with a game that looks appealing to all generations of gamers and then incentivize them to invest in a second console. If they're interested in selling more, they're going to have to try more dramatic courses. If Zelda and Smash Bros. were coming out in June, I wouldn't really be worried and I think they could naturally rebound as they did with 3DS. However, with such far out release dates (Smash Bros in Winter, Zelda next year, etc.) - I don't think gamers are patient enough to wait it out. Nintendo needs to motivate the consumer to buy the console today. Without it, I'm afraid gamers are going to continue to not pay attention and never bother with the Wii U.

Personally speaking, I love my Wii U and I'm extraordinarily patient. It's sad to see that it's the laughing stock of the new generation. I think a lot of gamers are missing out on a great console but I don't necessarily blame them when Nintendo is moving at a snail's pace to launch new games.

This still reeks of setting the bar too high. Games take time to make. Nintendo isn't going to rush development and risk hurting the quality of their games. They also probably won't sell Smash or Zelda bundles, as these are the games people will be getting the console for, in the first place. They'll bundle games the gamers wouldn't likely by separately to increase the radio of games to console. As seen with the Mario and Luigi bundle.

So the idea is to bundle the console with a game people weren't going to buy? Well.....

Fair argument, but it wouldn't be right not to mention that the 3DS is meant to be a personal item, so selling special versions based on popular franchises is a no -brainer. After that, it would seem a shame not to sell the game with the system. This isn't really the case with the Wii U so it may be handled differently.

Huh????? A personal item? The 3DS and Wii U are both gaming consoles and BOTH come bundled with games consumers are likely to buy:

  • Wind Waker HD Wii U
  • Super Mario Bros. Wii U
  • Skylanders Wii U

Oh... and this was just leaked recently...

Of course it makes sense to bundle great games with their consoles - they want to sell consoles, too. Obviously.

Yes, but it's a tad more complex than that. No less than fifteen people have used my Wii U in the past year. Only I use my 3DS.
