You don't have to be an engineer to figure out your internet is slow.

It could be failing, maybe try it on some other device, like a flash drive or SSD. Or just another HDD

This is the second one I'm trying. That's why I thought I'd check in here and see whether anyone else is have the same trouble.

That's exactly what I figured. Trine 2 was at, like 2hrs! It's all good, because you can still use the WiiU while it's downloading. :)
BTW SeanAaron, I sent you a request in Miiverse!

You can use the Wii U while it's downloading, but not while it's installing.

They are probably compressing it, but that's a damn slow unpack algorithm, if that is what the issue is. They really need to fix that.

Downloaded Trine 2 yesterday. It took under 1 hour to download and 10 minutes to install. Not bad for such a big game, especially since three computers were surfing the internet at the same time and I also tried Miiverse and Youtube on Wii U while it downloaded.

Biggest download game I've installed Is Sonic & All-Stars Racing, which was over 5 GB. Download was a little over 2 hours (in the background, while I played ZombiU) and install was about 10 minutes... all pretty reasonable if you ask me. Trine2 and Little Inferno were quick.

Were they all installed on your Wii U HD or on an external USB HD? I've installed smaller things (like Sonic Racing) directly onto my Wii U, and those go pretty quickly. It's only games like Batman (18 GB) where you're forced to install on the USB drive where I'm seeing crazy long install times.

Yes, sweet tart simon79, I tried it.

And yes, it is slow. Perhaps newer Wii U models will do USB 3.0 (which was already available when they decided on 2.0).

Update: I tried defagging the drive/ No luck.

As product as large as 18GBs takes 7-8hrs. I start to question the merit of having games you can play in you 1 TB USB drive.

yep ... i tend 2 use external usb HDD's 2 backup stuff on my PC / Laptops & it takes an eternity using 2.0 /facepalm (the wiiu really should be using USB3.0 but cost cutting is nintendo's speciality unfortunately) :(

All my crap is installed on the USB HDD and it installed quickly so I think you either have a lousy HDD or faulty WiiU device.

theres allot of people on various forums complaining of slow HDD access when using the wiiu's usb ports so the OP isn't alone. :)

Yeah it's good having a non malfunctioning WiiU... Time to start sending the faulty ones back so you can get a superior replacement then if you lot aren't happy ;) I know I would.

Still doesn't explain why mine only takes 5-10 mins to install a download though.

I think the Mad Aussie is right, though I've only made one retail download purchase and I recall it did take upwards of an hour to install. Unless you're willing to buy a 7200rpm HDD then there's little point in wondering though.

I'd also like to note that "defragging" is totally irrelevant here. The Wii U is using a proprietary filesystem and as it's a console it's no surprise there isn't a full suite of volume management tools. In fact the only operating system I've ever heard of requiring filesystem defragging is Windows - and I don't think even that has been the case since Vista.

The OP should attach his external USB HDD 2 his PC & time how long it will take 2 transfer 16GB over ... That'll either prove or disprove the problem lies with the wiiu itself. :)

I;'d like to test the system before I go flying around as Batnan. Cost is not an issue. Or cozy.

I've had enough 'deals' on Steam. No reason for getting them on Wii U.

This is a technical question, honestly, your ideas about how your may download pikmin eventually are just vagaries.
