Topic: If you were Nintendo, how would you advertise the Wii U in a better way?

So we all know the Wii U sales are declining these days. One of the most obvious reasons is that the advertisements don't really show the capabilities of the Wii U. So if you were Nintendo, how would you advertise Wii U in a better way? Who knows, maybe one of the nintendo's staff is listening here in Nintendo Life.

Making promise is easy. The hard part is keeping it.

I know next to nothing about advertising myself, but I'd think that'd it be more profitable to advertise more heavily when the heavy hitters come out.

Since the Wii U doesn't have many games out now, I'd think they'd at least wait until they have something they'll know will make an impact, and step up the advertisements then.

But then again I have no clue whether or not that's a smart decision.

I'd wait on advertising it heavily until more games came out for it, like @TysonofTime said.
As for how, it's tough. There's a lot of appealing aspects about the Wii U, but they're going to appeal to people differently. From my minimal experience with the device and with my friends' reactions to it, I'd say showing off playing games on the pad to be one thing to show off. One way to do it would be like this:

Have a guy playing COD on a standard controller on a TV, his girfriend comes in and wants to watch generic soap-opera, guy says he can't stop because he needs the TV for COD, girlfriend gets angry, fight happens. Then, a new scene occurs with the guy playing the game with the Wii U on the TV. Girl comes in and asks to watch generic soap-opera, guy nonchalantly complies and continues to play game on the pad. It wouldn't have to be COD, it could be anything, really, but I think it'd be a pretty good move to market it more towards the games that hardcore gamers like since it tells them that games they enjoy work without the TV.

However, there's lots of other things about the Wii U that are appealing. It's backwards compatible with Wii softwar and accessories, it features a unique take on the online gaming community, can work with any hardrive, etc. It's really hard to convey all of that stuff to someone all at once through basic advertising.

I would emphasize that the Wii U is an entirely new console, not a controller. People still think the Wii U is just a new controller for the Wii...

I still don't get why Nintendo even agreed on the name "Wii U." It's a stupid name and it confuses the hell out of people...

I think the way they've been promoting the Wii worked really well - that is a family enjoying themselves! With the Wii U commercials (at least the ones we have in the UK) it's always just one person. They need to promote the asymetric gameplay better with a group. If you think of the pre-launch video of that family with the overly-enthusiastic dad would be perfect in a shorter version (without the drama of him practically clutching his heart). A little on the end to show that if you already have a wii you can still keep ur wiimotes and play old wii games on it could convince some who already have the wii.
If you want to appeal to the more 'mature' gamers then showing how games like AC3 and Ninja Gaiden are better thanks to the gamepad then obviously it doesn't have to be a family setting, and as 'Moomoo' said the whole 'wiiu will still play whilst TV is in use' is perfect for those 'lads' who have live-in GFs, etc.
What I don't think works is when you have about 5 or 6 different adverts each selling a unique aspect of the gamepad when all that could combine into one shortened but more powerful advert.

That perfectly explains the last part of my statement! Those 5 or 6 adverts shows off what the controller can do! Not the console!

To be fair, the mentality of "It's just an add on" is new, due to things like the Kinect and the PS Move.

I think they need at least two lines of commercials. One for casuals and one for gamers (maybe a 3rd for kids). For casuals they should show off the awesome browser, the streaming services and TVii, Wii Fit, Wii U Panorama and/or Google Maps, video chat, and off TV play. I think they should also work on getting a few Apps like Kindle, Pandora, facebook, and maybe even some weird ones like a fast food ordering app. They should also work on making Brain Age for the Wii U, and maybe some other casual favorites like Nintendogs. And maybe Colors HD or Flipnote HD? For gamers they should just show an awesome game reel, focusing on exclusives and exclusive features, with some time dedicated to the much improved eshop, online play, and Wii U Pro remote, and showing some of the aforementioned apps in passing. If they made a kid version, which would be a good idea, I think they should make a better point of saying that you can play on just the Gamepad, but have to be near the system (my nephew thought it was a portable). They should show off Mario and Nintendo Land, particularly tackling parents in Chase Mii, and maybe also a quick reel featuring games like Rabbids, Skylanders, Tank Tank Tank, and Sonic Racing and/or Scribblenauts. They should also make an easy to use art app for kids.

I wouldn't do TV advertising at all.

And yes this is a completely serious comment. TV advertising is a money sink unless it fulfils a specific purpose as part of a broad marketing campaign.

Simply assuming that "better TV ad = money" is... well... it's not why people do entire degrees in marketing and take another decade to reach a position in a marketing company where they get to make decisions. Let's put it that way, shall we?

I have a feeling most major gaming companies would find this ridiculous regardless of the accuracy of it or anything the advertising team knows. "It's the big product we have to show it on tv, that's how it sells!" Just a wild guess though.

I don't know if I wouldn't advertise on TV at all, but I think there is some truth here. I would definitely advertise more on Youtube, Hulu, other service provider ondemand services, etc. I would make it very clear that this is a brand-new console: lots of shots showing the sleek new machine, and even words/headlines to the effect of "Nintend's brand-new console."

I still show the gamepad-only gameplay possibilities, but I would also show someone playing something like Arkham City or ZombiU, using the gamepad along WITH the TV image to do things not possible on a home console before. I would try to cover different demographics by displaying nostalgia-filled games like Nintendoland and NSMBU in the background, showing "hardcore" games like Arkham City and CoD, and then even non-gamer uses like Netflix and TVii.

I would also advertise the digital deluxe eshop promotion- 10% per purchase consistently until 2015 is a pretty sweet deal to be taking advantage of.
