Topic: Ideas for a new Metroid game

There is a high demand for a new Metroid. I've been thinking of how the story would be if a new Metroid game comes out. If you have any interesting ideas for gameplay or storyline for a new game then please comment.

As long as its atmospheric I'll be fine with the story as long as Samus is a good character to back as well.

Honestly I've loved all the Metroid games and their gameplay, yes even other M, so I have a very open mind to messing with the Metroid formula. I'd love to get a 2D Metroid again with beautiful 2D animation like Rayman Legends except in its own style of course. If its 3D like most people want I'd like to see a different spin on it, I love Prime but it makes me motion sick after awhile. I'm hoping for it to be Wii U, but I'll be cool if its 3DS. That's the beauty of owning both systems.

As long as I feel alone. I want to feel isolated and a little afraid, doesn't mean I want it scary just make me afraid

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

This is my idea:
On a far away planet with all kinds of different climates, Samus is in hot pursuit of a bomb making space pirate with a large bounty on his head. She fights her way through the city and to the bomb factory after some large space pirate fights. She infiltrates the factory and confronts the head pirate, but he flies to a remote part of the planet. Before leaving, he starts a countdown for a huge bomb that is in the center of the factory. Samus flees the factory and flies away from the city just in time to watch the bomb go off. A blast the size of a large moon rocks the planet. Horror stricken, Samus vows to kill the man responsible for he destruction. From then on, the player controls Samus (and can pilot her ship) and they must make their way across the post apocalyptic planet. Wild beast, roaming pirates, and scavengers are everywhere and Samus must defend herself and the remaining innocent she finds.

What do you think of my idea?

While I like some of the attempts at more traditional storytelling, I think the atmosphere + scanning storytelling should be the focus in nearly every game, as it is usually way more effective and interferes with the game play less. I'm not normally the guy to suggest games stop focusing on dialogue and cutscenes, but they really should for most Metroid games.

Similarly, Super Metroid and Prime 1 are how the semi-non-linear level design should be like. Later games got way too linear too often.

I have a few ideas beyond that...
-if Nintendo wants to continue to acknowledge Other M exists and/or continue Samus as a talkative character they should
1. Follow the advice for the games I just said
2. Hire legit sci-fi writers that have done good work and don't add an entire 3rd party dev that could cause too many cooks in the kitchen scenario
3. Have certain characters (let's say Anthony, Computer CO and that scientist girl from Other M) be in contact with Samus ala MGS, (totally stole this idea, don't care)

Also I'd like to see actual bounty hunting for once.

And maybe they can somehow find a way to make Ridley an unexpected ally. A certain other first person game makes me want to see this happen.

The best idea I have to give is to pick and choose ideas from Metroids past. And add a slew of new powerups.
I'd love to see Samus' new Jet Boots in a Metroid game
DON'T make COD-esque multiplayer in the game
DON'T put Miiverse integration, so the person can always be alone
DON'T make the controls so awful like Metroid Other M's forced Wii Remote controls

@Kyloctopus I actually enjoyed the multiplayer in Metroid Prime 2.

I don't really see the point of coming up with specific ideas for a storyline for a new Metroid game. I mean, it's not like anything we come up with (especially if it's detailed) is going to be the actual story for a new Metroid game.

I'd like to see a 2D classic-style Metroid game for the 3DS and a 3D Metroid game for the Wii U. The 3DS game could be Metroid 5, the sequel to Metroid Fusion. Metroid Fusion progressed the story in the Metroid franchise and I'd like to see where Nintendo takes it from there. I find it very interesting that
Samus is now part Metroid. It almost makes the title all the more relevant.
I'd also like to see them change things up like how Fusion did, like making Ice missiles instead of the ice beam. Not that I want them to do that exactly again, but just things like that so that it changes up the formula and gameplay some. Perhaps less hand holding than Fusion, though.

As for the 3D Metroid for Wii U, what I'd really like to see is an upgraded version of Other M, as far as gameplay goes. Perhaps even sort of combine the gameplay elements of Other M and the Prime games. My biggest gripe with the Prime games is how it took away Samus' agility. So in that regard, I liked Other M much more. But, that's not to say that the Prime games were all bad, not by any means. So keep it third person like Other M so Samus still has her agility. Allow the player to go into first person view, but unlike Other M allow the player to still move while in first person. A good example of this would be Skyward Sword. You're more agile in third person view, but not completely immobilized in first person view, either. Also bring back the targeting system from the Prime games mainly for when you're in third person view, so you'd have to go into first person view in order to manually aim. Also, very little hand holding, big world to explore and a feeling of isolation; which means no meeting up with other people or taking orders from someone (or a computer). Since the world would be big, they could also bring back the element of being able to use your ship to fast travel to different points.

@kkslider5552000 I hated the scanning in the Prime games. There was way too much of it and it was very boring. I know it was mostly optional, but I'm the kind of gamer that likes to do everything in the game. I completely agree with you on the linearity. I also like your idea of having the MGS style communications, but maybe just limit it to while you're in the ship, that way you're still isolated most of the time. Kind of like the navigation rooms in Fusion, except not having to visit the ship as often as you had to visit the navigation rooms.

There is a point for making fake storylines, it's fun.

Okay. Well, honestly, I'm not too interested in fan fictions. But if you have fun doing it, then that's cool.

I think the Wii U would benefit more from a Prime style game to showcase larger and more open ended environments. There's also some neat things the Gamepad can do to improve the experience, like using it for scanning or controlling Samus' ship like you could in Metroid Blast, in addition to the usual map and menu screens. Storyline wise, I'd like to see a continuation of Fusions as well, it would be interesting to have a storyline where the Federation becomes Samus' enemy.

As I said before, GamePad for 1st person view, and your tv displays third person view. No need for awkward switches between the two anymore with the Wii U. Other than that, just make a great game, I don't have many expectations or hopes.

Dreamz

I'd like to see a new game set post-Fusion in the style of Other M, with both the emphasis on story and the same third person setup. The only changes would be greater exploration and a lock-on system that didn't use 1st person mode for missiles.

I would like multi-player and on-line,Plaza and Street-Pass as side mission away from the main game.

I-U
  • 4-player multiplayer with bots and online, in-game material (exclude if sidescroller)
  • Miiverse integration would be highly preferred, as I would want to discuss the game via screenshots
  • Tell story through scanning the environment, but also have Samus's Notes that are voice acted
  • Quick Travel system would be preferred if first person, like ship travel, Echoes' Light Rails and Hunters' portals
  • If the Chozo must come back, I want to retrieve items from their statues' palms. Prime feels a bit odd without that aspect on Tallon IV.
  • Make the atmosphere darker and deeper, but don't make the game more difficult to convey that
  • Ice Beam needs to start creating platforms out of enemies again.
  • Go back to map stations and optional save locations
  • Give me audio options again. One of the very few issues I have with Other M is the default music volume can't be changed.

No first person view at all and I will be happy. Make it even more dark and get the Scary sounds back from the SNES version.

How would the camera system work, then? Typically, if a game has a first person perspective then you move slowly, otherwise it's nauseating. If the game is third person then you are able to move around quicker, but there is a lag so the camera is not always behind your back. Either the camera would be too fast moving and nauseating, or you'd have to switch between first person and third person controls. I've thought about this a lot, ever since the Wii U came out I've had all sorts of ideas for the Wii U including games where it was third person on the tv and first person on the gamepad, but there's always the issue of the camera. So, if you have a solution for that, I would love to hear it.
