This is a project that I had to do for one of my marketing classes this semester. We were told to market a product, whether made up or real and try to make it appeal to a certain audience. Seeing as how this Christmas sees the rise of the eighth generation of consoles in full, I decided to market the under dog: The Wii U. I tried as best as I could to appeal to Nintendos most important market: the gamers and put a lot of emphasis on the Gamepad.

Tell me what you think!

An All New Console by Nintendo!

It’s time to jump into the next generation! From the creators of famous series like Super Mario™, The Legend of Zelda ™ and Pokemon ™ comes the all new, next generation, high definition gaming console and it’s built just for U! The Nintendo Wii U brings a new gaming experience unlike any other to the living room! With it’s new revolutionary touchscreen-equipped controller, The Wii U Gamepad, you have an easy and intuitive way play your games and never be taken out of the experience.
You’ve been in this situation: You’re into a game, you’ve spent hours making progress and are about to approach the final boss of the dungeon when suddenly, a family member wants to watch the baseball game and you’re forced to either pause it and continue later or shut the game down. Well thanks to the unique second screen, you can quietly continue your game without disturbing your family with Off-TV play! The entire game will be displayed and fully playable on the Wii U Gamepad in glorious high definition. You can also plug in headphones into the Gamepad to immerse yourself even further. Never separated from the game, always connected. Games like Super Mario 3D World, Rayman Legends and Nintendo Land use the Gamepad to its full potential, allowing you to interact with your environment by stunning enemies, breaking boxes, cutting ropes. moving platforms, and much more.

You’ll always stay connected with Wii U through the brand new social network Miiverse ™ created by gamers, for gamers! Ever get stuck in a certain part of a game? Ask for help on Miiverse and get your answer within minutes. Ever laugh at a hilarious moment and wish you could share it with the world? Post a screenshot and caption it to your liking. Are you an artist? You can draw on the Wii U Gamepad and share your creations with everyone! No more “friend codes” or passwords are required to connect with people! Just befriend them right on Miiverse and start talking to them instantly. Even some of the games can’t get enough of Miiverse! Like In Super Mario 3D World you collect stamps in-game which can be then used to create a unique drawing to be posted on Miiverse. And if you;re away from your Wii U, you can still access Miiverse anytime on your computer. With Miiverse, you’ll never truly be alone ever again.
Though what’s a game console without games? Not to worry! Because Wii U has something for everyone! Platformers such as New Super Mario Bros U and Rayman Legends, Stealth games such Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, Mature shooters and beat em ups such as Call of Duty and Bayonetta 2 and fighters such as Injustice: Gods Among Us and Super Smash Bros. So much variety on one console, so much to offer and the best part? The Wii U sells at affordable price of just $300 dollars. With Xbox One at a steep price of $500 dollars and PS4 at $400, both using the same boring controller they’ve used since their first console, how could you ever pass up this great value? A console with a unique and innovative controller, an always connected social network, and such a huge library of a variety of games, for just $300; there’s no competition. It was meant for U.

And the Wii U mostly still uses the exact same Wii Remotes, too...

@The_Fox Oh Yes they have. It's the same controller with slight modifications. Picking up the Dualshock 4 is no different from picking up The Dual Shock 3 or even 1. It's the same circle, x, triangle square routine since the PS1. The Xbox's controller is the same way, in fact it's the most similar to its predecessor than even the PS4.

Well, this alone is still better then what Nintendo has been putting out, even including the "pitch" commercials.

Oh PS: I tried to invoke that cheesy 90's ad feel where Sega and Nintendo were basically slinging dirt at each other.

I wrote two articles discussing Wii U's bad marketing and what could be done to fix it, which you can find here if you wish to read the rest(has more pics of Ad ideas also)- http://pauseyourgame.com/2013/11/what-nintendo-wii-u-need-to-...

But here is the two Ideas I have
"Unique Campaign

The U can mean more then “you”, it can mean Unique (which I think is a better use anyway). The goal of the Unique campaign would be to distinguish between games of the same genre in addition to the quality and offerings that are exclusively available on the Wii U. Let me provide a commercial example:

Provide a sizzle reel of a good variety of games that are part of different genres(avoid overlapping if possible). Each game listed will have a label on it following the same scheme “Uniquely ______” that makes note of what sets it apart of the rest of the games in the same genre. Then after showing several games and their unique offers you can follow it with playing them in Unique places with the game pad. Finally end it with, “Wii U – A Unique Experience”

Here are a few examples of what could be posted when advertising games:
Untitled
Untitled

It’s a very straightforward idea that gets the message across that what Nintendo offers is not found on other consoles. Part of the key here is not directly attacking Sony and Microsoft, which forces (and endorses) a direct comparison where Nintendo usually looses on the technical aspects but strides in the “fun” department. By pushing this “Unique” message it serves to reinforce its exclusive library of top quality games that can only be found on the Wii U which will push consumers to want a Wii U as their second choice in addition to whatever else they may have ."

I had another commercial idea for the Wii U in part 1-
" Here are but some of the many examples the Game Pad off TV screen provide:

Cooking in the Kitchen? Put Netflix on and keep watching or Youtube to follow a recipe

Outside having a smoke? No more Angry Birds with that cig; you’re now hunting Rathalos in Monster Hunter

Taking an extended sit on the toilet ? Words with friends pffffft; you’re now playing Mario in a tanooki suit stomping on goombas in Super Mario Bros U
In the tub taking a bath? No more just listening to music; you’re captaining the Jack Doll and finding booty in Assassins Creed 4

Socializing in the Living room with family you’re not fond of? No more fondling your phone hoping for someone to get back to you to save you from this misery; you get to hunt down the Joker and his thugs because you’re Batman!

You see where I’m going with this. It’s a simple commercial idea and hits the mark on several levels. Its funny due to the absurd situations you can set up; it describes a feature’s ability to the extreme by showing all of those situations you did not consider; and above all, it provides awareness to the other pertinent features that come with owning a Wii U. Then you could take all those absurd situations and have them all end the same way, which is whatever the person was doing coming back to the TV and hitting one button and resuming their game there. It’s straight forward ,simple, funny, has room for variety, and above all helps Nintendo spread the word while better informing its potential customers."

Its just an example to show the many options you could have, you could go outside and do anything or any # of situations. I typically rather then explain the wide variety just show extremes in examples.

Yea, they should be bombarding their ads with new meanings for the "U". Unique, Ultra,Unparalleled, Ultimate, would convey the message far better than what their doing right now. "From Nintendo, an all new console: Wii U. Unique multiplayer experiences, Ultra "Blast" processing for bigger, better games ( do it like SEGA, it's ok to lie!), Unparalleled social networking connecting games and people, Ultimate family favourite games such as Super Mario 3D World, Wii Party U, etc. Tailor made for U."

@Guitardude7 Thanks :) I have a Marketing Degree myself and remember going through all said classes, may i suggest watching a TV Show called The Pitch(Its on A&E, not sure if available across the pond). If you plan on going for a marketing degree its real helpful watching what they do and you can get a lot of good ideas or at the very least how a complete advertisement campaign comes together.
