The truth is, the older a modern gamer gets, the less each new generation will impress them.
Maybe, or could be Nintendo is slacking in the games department. When I look at trailers for games like Zelda U, MGSV, and Final Fantasy XV those games look like they will be really special. I used to think Xenoblade Chronicles X looked fantastic but I get less impressed with it everytime I see it.
It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

Yea, I don't fully buy the whole "age ISN'T a factor" thing. I do think it is, at least to a certain degree. Becoming desensitized is a real thing, people, and you can't just ignore that fact because you want to.
I agree 100%. I was really impressed when I first saw parallax back in the day or when I first played a game on my Gameboy Color purely because "wow, it's in color!". Even on the DS I was impressed when Brain Training actually recognised my writing and turned that into a game or when Mario Kart and Pokemon were online. Wii Sports was impressive because it was so simple, Super Mario Galaxy was impressive because it was platforming on spheres and massive structures in space. On the Wii U? We get all those things.... but I'm not floored because I've already seen all that.
Diminishing returns. Although I'm sure if I was eight again I'd be just as floored by every tiny little bit of improvement.

The WiiU still blew me away seeing Nintendo in HD some really wonderful art design and the ganeoad has changed the way I play games forever smaller controllers don't feel right anymore. Nintendo never fails to deliver for me. Mario Maker is going to be my highlight next year the chance to make my own levels its every 20 something's childhood dream come true
Wii U games that stood out for me: Mario Kart 8 - The concept of proper DLC in a Nintendo game is amazing, also use of F-Zero related things (antigravity, Mute City) even though the franchise has been RIP for over 10 years. DKC Tropical Freeze - I generally really hate underwater levels and the DKC series is no different except this title, the structure of those levels in addition to Dixie Kong's special underwater abilities makes them a lot of fun (except the World 4 boss) Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed - Very fun game which provides an exceptional single player experience via World Tour mode as well as a fantastic battle mode (both of which hasn't been with Mario Kart for nearly 10 years). Hyrule Warriors - The first time that you can actually play as other characters from the LoZ universe rather than just Link all the time, DLC is also very prominent so hopes of playing as characters such as Skull Kid and Tingle could be fulfilled. If you want to complete the game fully it'll take you hundreds of hours! Super Mario 3D World - Captain Toad levels are literally the best part of this game, the fact you're playing as a character that can't jump means a completely different take on the standard Mario 3D experience. I was devastated when Captain Toad Treasure Tracker was delayed to 2015.

I do see that point. For me, I fell off the Nintendo wagon during the Wii era, so I was already used to seeing games in HD on my 360/PS3 - HD, therefore, wasn't a huge deal for me. But I can understand fans who stuck with Nintendo and didn't get to see HD gaming until the Wii U. For those people, though they may not be a huge segment, the jump to HD would definitely be WOW.
I think the internet is also a big deterrent to being WOWed these days. I mean, think about it. Most of us simply by the fact that we are here, visiting an internet forum, check gaming sites and forums regularly each day. We are inundated with other people's opinions on games which, sadly, tend to be rather jaded and negative mostly due to the general "internet culture" our community has going on (which is a whole other topic, really). Whether we realize (or want) these feelings to seep into our own, it happens, and in that way we also become desensitized to the amazing things Nintendo's been doing with many of these Wii U games.
An example? Well, for me, Mario Kart 8 WOWed me because I was away from Nintendo for so long, therefore this is my first "online" Mario Kart! And it's awesome! I've probably put more hours into this game than anything I've played in the last two generations purely because of that fact. So, OP, YOU might not be WOWed, and that's fine, and boards like this are for opinions, but many of us have been, and you (and others) should be open to that fact rather than crying "fanboy" or some such thing whenever a disagreeing response comes along.

Nintendo is making Zelda U...
Really? That's weird. All this time I think it was Naughty Dog.

I had a 360 as well and I'll have a ps4 at some point what is special for me is seeing Nintendo games in HD.
I'm with you really. I bought a Wii U for Mario Kart 8. I was originally going to skip out on it and wait for Smash Bros, despite the new graphics, but GameXplain convinced me with their extensive coverage. It's a good game, but I havent played it since 1 week after release. I bought Super Mario 3d World a couple days before I got Mario Kart 8. Again, a good game, but nothing seriously impressive; Vastly inferior to its predecessors in my opinion, despite its fresh ideas (new powerups) and looking back, I wasnt exactly in love with galaxy at first since I was forced to use a Wii remote. And then we get to the reason I was originally going to buy a Wii U. Not so long ago, it was finally time for Smash. Yet again, good game, but despite its innovation and new characters, in my opinion, and inferior game to melee's combat system (no, I never used exploits), had no form of adventure mode like the previous two, and this new Classic mode feels weird in comparison. I also miss things like break the Targets, Trophy Tussle, and run to the exit; the things that were featured in other Classic/Separate Modes. Also, for the first time ever...I didnt buy a Pokemon game on Release!! I still havent bought it, and even though I played the originals, Im not quite motivated, as it seems very identical to X and Y, despite being a remake (Yea, I know this is about Wii U lol).
Many good things, but honestly nothing that makes me want to get up and play my Wii U. It saddens me that I would rather play my old gamecube games, and a few wii games, over the newer and "better" things. A portion of it is nostalgia admittedly, but there was just so much more to offer in the past in my opinion. Super Mario 3d World did not feel like a proper next gen 3d mario, Mario Kart 8 was just okay (but superior to all other versions in most ways) and Smash Bros, while still fun, I wont be putting in 500+ hours into it like I did with Melee (The most Ive put into any game by far). I dont regret these purchases in any way, but I most certainly have not been wowed or genuinely impressed. I appreciate them trying so hard though (Like with the upcoming Mario Kart 8 DLC)
Soooo your saying that nothing has wowed you... and we tell you to play Wonderful 101.... and you refuse? Dude, step out of your comfort zone a bit, you'll thank us for it. If your getting tired of the same old Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon crap, just play something else. Personally, the Wii U is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the Wii so far in my opinion. The only games on the wii that I considered to be AMAZING and memorable were:
Super Mario Galaxy 1 (The second one was overkill, and Galaxy 1 actually had a STORY)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Best game on the system in my opinion.)
Metroid Prime Trilogy (Prime 3 is okay, but when it's packed in with Prime 1, it gets ZOMG amazing!)
Aaaaand those are the only games that I still play from the wii and enjoy. I've never liked Zelda all that much soooo no comment on those games. I mean, I played the other wii staples of course, like DKC Returns, Kirby, Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing, Galaxy 2, Paper Mario, etc. But I just don't care that much about those games. They were good but... meh I don't know. However, I've loved every single game I own so far on the Wii U!
Super Mario 3D World (Not as good as Galaxy, but who cares! It's light hearted, quick reflex fun! And I still replay levels every now and then.)
Mario Kart 8 (Soooo much better than Mario Kart Wii. The online and DLC keep me coming back for a couple races pretty much every week.)
Wonderful 101 (Great story and hilarious characters. The gameplay is very unique too.)
Nintendo Land (Okay singleplayer, but this is THE single greatest party game I have ever played!)
Looking forward to getting Smash and maybe captain toad soon as well! Also, I'm sorry you didn't like 3D world. I suppose it's not what your looking for in a "next-gen" Mario platformer, but Nintendo NEEDED a big Mario game for their failing system, so they looked to 3D land to help them make 3D world. It was easier to take things from what was already there.
Check out my YouTube channel if you love gaming, and Nintendo (especially Metroid) I think you'll enjoy my videos. :)

To the OP, all those games you listed were literally groundbreaking games that all changed the way that games were played and developed in general, leading up to what we have today. That's where that wow factor originated, it's because nothing like those games had ever been created before. The question is where do you go from there to create new experiences? Donkey Kong Country was one of the first uses of CG graphics and polygons in consoles. Mario 64 was the game that made 3d platforming a viable genre, and OoT solidified it by having more polish and introducing camera lock targeting into the industry, and Prime and Galaxy were also high water marks, pushing new grounds in their own way, such as Prime being a FPS exploration/adventure/rpg. Nintendo is trying again now to do something new with the Wii U gamepad, but they haven't quite nailed the perfect game with it yet. I'm betting that they will before the generation is over. It took a few years for motion plus tech to occur on the wii, allowing for games like Skyward Sword and Red Steel 2, which weren't possible before then. There might just not be very many new things to implement within games though with the current model and tech however, if you want to look on a pessimistic side. I have a feeling Xenoblade Chronicles X may push some new boundaries.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has definitely wowed me. Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 may/may not have wowed me (they are kind of borderline), but they are are great games nonetheless.
