@brewsky and @gage_wolf Does Bayonetta 2 count? The screenshots from that game looks very good. There's a developer video of Platinum Games talking about how they wanna use the Wii U's hardware as best as they can.
Of course it counts. Platinum's a third party that's committed to making a good game. But...we still have an extreme lack of third party games that are not indie games.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.

Well this is getting a bit out of hand. Here's my first post again, without the sarcastic bits as you seem to be sensitive to those:
"at least in my opinion, that the Wii U is in a really bad place. There is a serious lack of quality games hitting the U. If you peruse through the Nintendo Life new stories, the majority of the game previews, MK 8 & SSB being the exception, the games look like they came out 15 years ago. This month, all the other systems are getting heavy hitters such as Dark Souls 2, Titanfall, Infamous: Second Son, and Metal Gear 5. What are we getting on the Wii U? Nothing. "
Read it again. I'm making pretty much the same point.
@gage_wolf
I read your posts, I'm not taking it out of context. I just don't see what reason you could have for saying the games coming out on the system look like they're "15 years old". Other than trying to be sensationalist and trying to get a rise out of people.

FYI nintendo believes in something called CLASSICS.. people tend to hate changes to their favorite game fanchises.. or companies.
Miss those days when you can get the highest score in pac-man and brag about it?.. NAH now we have online leaderboards of shame..
What about successfully creating a speed run in mario 64? eh.. now we got a slow paced mario galaxy (atleast for me)..
Sometimes it feels good to go back to the classics.. relive your achievements you had to EARN... want to explore wind waker? Nintendo remade it just for you! Want to relive mario 64? Although maybe not on the wii u.. they still made it happen! Wanna play ocarina of time without they incredible disturbing chanting in the fire temple? Thanks nintendo!
And how is microsoft or sony different? Microsoft makes halo and CoD exactly the same each new title.. halo with minor changes but it's still halo nothing new or exciting except a new vehicle that grows old.. You're either into a shooter or a classic platformer... and any special game like pokemon or wind waker are just titles to kill time or be competive (not wind waker of course). If anything nintendo is advancing MORE as you can see how vivid the colors on those games are.. they may be pixelated.. but the pixels for once really shine on the wii U..
even if they're NOT on the wii u if you really want to go there.. it wouldn't matter.. atleast nintendo is being creative not competive..
AND BTW... BTW... since when did graphics ever matter anyway... as long as the games are solid in ever aspect.. then stop worrying about how they look and when they looked like they were released.. you opinions are just that.. opinions...
yeah retro style became all the rage among developers with lower budgets.
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

Is that game in any case inspired by Metal Slug? I can't stop comparing the two.
Probably, I know I've heard people say it looks like Metal Slug before. Ironically, they're one of the few who didn't namedrop on any of their official pages, so it's hard to say.

So you grabbed a handful of indie titles to prove your point? Well that's nice. Just a shame you had to be so selective. You just drove right past Child of Light
Also, what's wrong with a nice artstyle? Ballpoint Universe and Pier Solar HD look pretty damn good. Get off your high horse, wasn't the best game for the PS4 launch Resogun?
edit: as a side note to everyone. Bit Trip Runner 2. If you haven't brought it yet and don't buy it after that discount. Something's wrong with you.

Hey, you said, " I just don't see what reason you could have for saying the games coming out on the system look like they're "15 years old". Other than trying to be sensationalist and trying to get a rise out of people."
So I was just trying to show you that I was not trying to sensationalize anything, but that the majority of the stories about new Wii U games on NIntendo Life in fact do look older and are indeed mostly platformers and puzzle games. All of the links are the most recent stories on the site, I was not being selective. Child of Light looks fine, but guess what...still a 2d platformer.
I am not on a high horse, I simply expect more from the Wii U. If I wanted a console that played charming little affordable indie titles I could have bought the Ouya and saved myself $250. I bought a Nintendo Console that promised me all the premium third party support of the other systems, Nintendo's amazing first party games, and indie titles as well. But here we are a year later and that promise is obviously not a reality. I have no problem with retro graphics or minimal art styles, and I'm aware that many games on many systems have retro aesthetics. The reason I pointed it out on the Wii U is because that's pretty much ALL we're getting. Meanwhile, Sony and Microsoft are both set to get a wide variety of titles that vary in art and game play style over the next couple months. I bought my Wii U with the intention that it would be my single new console for the next couple years, but at this point Nintendo is pretty much forcing people's hand to make it a companion to another system, which is a shame.
I am not on a high horse, I simply expect more from the Wii U.
First off: 15 years ago, we had hardly any 2D platformers coming out. That was 1999, when every game and their mother had to be 3D. I'm pretty sure someone else brought that up already, but I have to say it again because it's really getting on my nerves.
Second: You expect more from the Wii U? More of what exactly? Because as I mentioned before, the PS4, which has also taken a stance of bringing along a lot of Indie games to fill its gaps, has a lot of retro games coming to it, too. Along with lots last gen ports. Seriously, were's @Gamer83 when you need him? He's been pretty angry about that lately.
Nintendo is new to HD gaming, so they can only make so many games right now. 3rd Parties are indeed leaving, albeit for fairly complex reasons, with signs of low support right from the on-set. Indies have been on a retro kick for quite a while now, and they're the ones flocking to the Wii U, especially since Nintendo gamers tend to be more nostalgic (apparently, seeing as even Nintendo's been going retro). The signs were there, so I'm not exactly sure what you're expecting.

You guys and the 15 year thing. I'm not sure why you're so keen to prove that in fact I'm wrong and the games look older? Fine they look 20 years old. Odd battle to pick. Anyways, what do I expect from the Wii U? A variety of games to play. I expected Nintendo would learn their lesson from previous history and make a system that catered to third party support, as they claimed they had when the Wii U was launching. This month marks the beginning of major releases hitting every system...but the Wii U. And that's how it's going to be for the foreseeable future. I'm pretty sure after Watchdogs, that's it. No more major third party games for us. I'm a very nostalgic gamer as I've been a Nintendo fan for a long time, but that doesn't have to cancel out my interest in other big new games does it? Forget PS4, at the moment PS3 and 360 are still getting more games than the Wii U.

Those are all valid points.
That doesn't make the superiority complex against my favorite genre any less insulting to people's intelligence.
And calling Child of Light a platformer is like calling Paper Mario TTYD a platformer. :/
Disregarding games because they are 2D or pick a more basic style is very, very strange. Especially given there's a near universal consensus that some of the best games of the last ten years have been exactly that. I mean if I was to make a list of the best games that Nintendo has had on their systems in the last ten years I'd definitely have games like World of Goo, Bit Trip Beat, Art Style Orbient and Lost Winds on that shortlist. Not because I'm throwing a bone to the indie stuffs but because those games were fun and stuck in my head well after.
That's why people are having a go at that "look like they're 15 year old games" bit. Trying to use that as a negative grates especially when you're applying it to games like Ballpoint Universe, Pier Solar HD and Child of Light. Not every game needs to push the visuals to 11 and frankly some of the games that don't both play and look better than the ones that do.
@gage_wolf: we could argue the PS360 are filled to the brim with grimdark shooters and sports games if we want to use the same measurement you're using.
I'm with you, some of my favorite games of all time are 2D, but that doesn't mean that's all I want to play...ever. I'm not damning every 2D game that's ever come out by simply saying the new Wii U games look old. Those are two different sentiments.
Pier Solar HD and Child of Light both look like they could have run on the PS1. Those experiences were awesome the first time around, 15-years-ago, with games such as Valkaryie Profile (1999), Star Ocean: Second Story (1999), and Grandia (1999). If you were stuck playing the everything-must-be-3D philosophy of the N64 at that time, then I get it. Nostalgia is a powerful beast, and that's what the VC titles are for. I just find it odd when the retro games and the new games look about the same in graphic quality. I would hope we can move on from that time and experience new games that utilize the new technology in a meaningful way.
Dude, that argument is tired. Do you own either of those systems? Or are you just dropping generalizations to simply argue. I have a PS3, and I do not own one single sports game or "grimdark shooter." Here ya go off the top of my head: PS3 - Journey, Shadow of the Colossus/ Ico HD, Ni No Kuni, Dark Souls, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Katamari, Noby Noby Boy, all the Pixel Junk games, Folklore. Get out of the Nintendo vacuum.
