Basically it just hit me - what the Wii U is all about.

Now I have to admit - I don't play the Wii U that much - I do however use it A LOT. I use it to browse the internet in bed, and watch films in the bedroom via Netfix or Internet Browser. I use it to play Youtube clips on the TV when I have friends round - and my Mrs. (Super Casual gamer, loves candy crush, and Facebook type games on her phone) uses it in this capacity only. She spent like an hour with her friend using Google Street View app. We use it when cooking, to get recipes up on the Gamepad (if her tablet is outta charge).

Just like how the Wii was designed to give casual average household an experience they could share with the whole family, the Wii U gamepad is designed to bring entertainment and integrated technology into the household. I will straight up say that although, at the moment, I haven’t been ‘playing’ the Wii U as much, it has been beneficial to the fun we have had in this house. I admit that there is also other ways and devices to achieve what I just explained. And that is related to the failing of Nintendo trying to be two things at once, a ‘Gaming machine’ and a ‘Household entertainment unit’. Like a wise man once said – “A sofabed in never a very good sofa, nor a very good bed”.

It’s almost like Nintendo have realised this and thought that Hey, we want to do both of these things, but they would work better if they were separate… Like one division for Gaming and another for , lets say, entertainment that improves the Quality of Life… in a household.

It hit me when I saw this website http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/hardware/pickup/index.html

You see how, besides the gaming, Nintendo wants it’s product to be used in all these situations, in the Kitchen, during Parties singing Karaoke, watching films, using the Wii Fit. Basically investing in fun ways to enjoy new experiences within the family and to be a unique household product.
Watch promotional videos like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybA6nGKi9pY&feature=youtub... for the Wii U., they contain stuff like this.

You then realise that Nintendo have been developing the Quality of Life stuff for a while, they just didn’t know what to do with it. They have a vision and they are trying really hard to figure out how to implement it – and you know what, there is a market for this. This is stuff that Families will want, yeah the boisterous 15 year old guys might scoff – but when has society ever took their views on board when choosing what they like. I know my Wife won’t, nor my Mum haha. And a Family that has this stuff will have something completely different as a part of their life, than those that don’t. Furthermore, this aspect of the consoles is never really rated badly.

So in short, the Gamepad is an integral part of their QoL vision, and less so for the gaming side of their vision. So this explains why they have trouble implementing it’s usage in their own games. This is a whole new development and idea, and Nintendo are still feeling their way out in the dark where it hasn’t really been done before.

So have peace, the QoL will be something veerrrrrry different from their gaming heritage, but something that we are all so used to from the Nintendo we know today.

I had my house remodeled just so my kitchen was closer to my living room. Now I can have my gamepad in there while cooking all the time!

Hey! I'm a (sometimes) boisterous 15 year old guy and I love my Wii U! The Wii U I bought with my own money. Well actually I'll be 15 in 3 weeks, but same difference.

I just like the universal remote function. You just pick up the GamePad and you're set, you can do everything you need to do while playing a game with that one device. Or you could just browse youtube, either way.

Some playlists: Top All Time Songs, Top Last Year

The Wii U is a truly great console, and it's a lot better for gaming compared to the Wii.

@open Awesome write-up, man! I've never thought of it this way before, but it makes sense. That being said, I think Nintendo has some trouble with staying focused...that might be why we have the "mash-up" that is the Wii U. And I'm not saying that the Wii U is a bad system--in fact, it's my favorite Nintendo system so far since the SNES, and I mean that.

When I sit close to the stage, sometimes I get sweat or spit on me from the Runaway Five.

This smells of denial. The fact that we are now bragging that the Wii U can be used in the kitchen, or for karaoke, is a sure sign, at least in my opinion, that the Wii U is in a really bad place. There is a serious lack of quality games hitting the U. If you peruse through the Nintendo Life new stories, the majority of the game previews, MK 8 & SSB being the exception, the games look like they came out 15 years ago. This month, all the other systems are getting heavy hitters such as Dark Souls 2, Titanfall, Infamous: Second Son, and Metal Gear 5. What are we getting on the Wii U? Nothing. A few VC titles if we're lucky. Until MK 8 hits, looks like I'll be playing games on my 8-year-old PS3 and looking up recipes on my Wii U. QoL baby!

................... >.> Who said we were bragging about the Wii U? We acknowledge the problems surrounding the console but that doesn't mean we can't like the stuff we can do with it. Give us a freaking break. And yes... we already know we are in a tiny drought until MK8 comes. Sheesh.

@shingi_70 I'm telling you... The Gamepad is actually really cool once you get to use it in your own home. I'm not trying to hype it up. I think the Gamepad is awesome.

@open Friend, you've only just begun to understand the potential of the Wii U. This rabbit hole goes deeper, oh yes. Much deeper.

I never said it wasn't awesome, my main thing is when it comes to getting new users onto the platform how can you convince them that the Wii U gamepad is better than a Tablet/console set up. My brother has a surface/Xbox One and other than say Off Screen Play (something he doesn't care about that much) it would be a hard sell to show him what a Gamepad does that the Gamepad can't.

I think it would help nintendo if they opened up app development for the system so more people could take advantge of the gamepad. The Wii U should have also came with software installed for the gamepad, like how the 3DS came with face radiers and teh AR card games.
