Home consoles? Generally when they first come out. The Wii U I waited outside my local Future Shop for 4 hours in order to get it on day one. The Wii I waited until April 2007 as I wanted to finish that current year at University before buying a console that would eat up most of my time. GameCube was a day one purchase. Everything before that I was too young to pay for things myself, so I'll skip those.

The handhelds I generally wait a bit simply due to the fact that I know that Nintendo always releases a better, re-design version eventually, so it's best to wait. I jumped on board the 3DS bandwagon when the XL was launched (plus by then it had a better game library... ports of Star Fox and Zelda don't cut it for me) and with the original DS I waited until the Lite came along, again launching alongside a Mario title.

My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

I always get a Nintendo system as soon as I can after launch, money permitting. I want to show my support to Nintendo and I know there will be new Mario, Zelda, Smash, Kart, etc. Zelda is my favorite game series, so I gotta get the new Nintendo systems to keep up.

I've nearly always bought early and never regretted. The price cuts and cheaper games are always outweighed by the fun, even with the N64 which took ages to get a decent flow of games. People moaning about Wii U's 3rd party and 1st party support have no idea how bad the early days of the N64 were. PS1 had 200+ games when N64 had 3. The Gamecube and Wii were also not much better for 1st or 3rd party support in year one either.

MK8 + good Zelda is worth the entire price of the Wii U to me. I will play 1000s of hours on MK8 until the next console.

I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.

When I have the money. I'm not usually an early adopter. The only console I bought on launch window was the Wii.

Hmmm, this question actually made me realize something. My first console of a new generation has always been Nintendo. I remember getting the N64 and GCN Christmas morning during their launch year. It took us a while to get the Wii because it was so impossible to find those first couple of years but we still had it way before the PS3. We would have had the Wii U at launch had I not had reservations about early adopting and shared them with my family. I still haven't gotten the Wii U yet (though the reason is mostly due to monetary problems), but it'll most definitely be once again the first home console I get this gen (possibly even the only one depending on what pops up in the PS4/XB1 line up years down the road).

Wii U will be the first home console I purchase with my own money, just as the 3DS is the first handheld I initiated a purchase. Both of these hardware caught my interest because of the games that have come out/been announced for them. So I guess at this point in my life where I'm the one making the console purchases, I buy the hardware when the software tells me it's worth the purchase.

I usually wait until there's about 10 exclusives I'm interested in, but the price could make a big difference. I buy every console eventually, so I rarely feel the urge to get something straight away, and I'm quite happy to wait and watch the price drop. The only console I've ever bought at launch was the Wii, although I did also get the DS and PSP before they launched in the UK by importing from Japan. The second Christmas is usually the time it starts getting good for me.

For me the Wii U currently has New Super Mario Bros U, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, and Super Mario 3D World. Donkey Kong, Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros will bring it up to 7, so it just depends on what else comes this year.

I also use to always buy consoles at launch but as the hardware becomes more advanced and opens up more room for problems I have stopped doing that.

Primarily for Zelda games though Wario games are very high on my list too, haven't got the wii u yet though as WW was my least fav of the 3D Zelda's still like it a lot mind you, also that game and wario title seemed to get some pretty meh reviews, since I'm not big on Mario or MK and SSB I don't really have a reason to buy the wii u any time soon.

I'm waiting it out until it's bundled with Mario Kart 8. I also want SSB4 & Sonic Boom.

It's an impulse buy for me. Got a Wii back in 2010. Barely played it. Missed GameCube and the others in between the SNES. But got a GBA for grins in 2002. Picked up two Wii Us- one in April and one in Dec. (WindWaker) for when I go to my GF's house. Got a 3ds b/c I enjoyed the Wii U so much (in Aug). Didn't buy any of the other DS systems.
