Hello there,
Imagine you're a video game designer and you were tasked upon making a Wii U game. What genre would you use and how would you implement the GamePad? The GamePad has become under a lot of scrutiny as of late but in this game it needs a real purpose. How would you use in the case of Nintendo's new IP for Wii U?

A example I would give is an adventure game where the TV screen would show a different time period of the exact same location while the gamepad will show a different time period of the exact same location. The TV will show a modern day location while the gamepad would show a Historical location of that same modern location found on the TV screen. You can control the 2 characters for each time period simultaneously. This could be used to solve puzzles which will correlate with each time period and any changes in both periods will affect the other time period and vice versa.

I would like to see it used as a rear view mirror in a racing game. To me, that seems so obvious and useful, I am kind of astonished that no developer has done it yet.

I had Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed at one point, but the gamepad screen only showed an overhead map unless you tilted the controller. Was there an option for it to be a full rear view mirror?

No, there sadly wasn't an option for the window to take up the entire screen. That probably contributed to me never using it. Regardless of usefulness, you did say that you were astonished it hadn't been done before, when it had (poorly). It would be cool if Nintendo took the chance to do it right in Mario Kart 8!

I would take the motion controlled sword fighting concept from Skyward Sword and perfect it with the Wii U.

You use the Wii Plus Remote as your sword of course, but let's set this game in the future. It's a new franchise! Sci Fi sword fighting with a little bit of gunplay, action packed though suspenseful. Let's throw some steampunk in there as well.

Well here's where the Gamepad would come in, you've got your sword in one hand, but what about your shield? NintendoLand has shown us that the Gamepad is ready for complete motion based use. I'd ask Nintendo to release an accessory with the title that allows the user to strap the Gamepad to their opposing forearm (the swordless arm) so that it can be used as the in game shield! This allows for more complex and technical swordplay.

Now, we're not done utilizing the full potential of the Gamepad yet. In game, your character has an item on their forearm, much like you have the Gamepad on your forearm in real life, however the characters forearm device is an amazing piece of technology that can not only produce a shield made of light from it, but it can also allow the user to send attacks from it. The game player can use the touchscreen on the Gamepad, (which is attached to their forearm) to select attacks or even browse the in game menu, inventory, etc.

I'd imagine the game plays much like Skyward Sword but in a more futuristic setting. Name it whatever you want. Just make something like this for the Wii U. This would totally sell the system to people who want more action on the console.

Mario Party and its 1 vs 3 mini games. Think about it, this is basically what the GamePad was made for. The four players would initially use normal controls to get round the board, then whenever a 1 vs 3 mini game started, the unlucky sod who ends up their own gets given the GamePad and a special control scheme based on the touch screen.

Indeed, for all the talk of how 'revolutionary' asymmetric multiplayer was, Mario Party had already done the same thing in the Nintendo 64 days, basically predating Nintendo Land by ten or more years and having a very similar gameplay style.

My dream game would be a Rogue Squadron title with a 2 player mode that had one player using a Pro/classic/Wii controller to pilot the ship and the second player using the GamePad as a gunner or tech support. For example sitting back to back in a Snowspeeder, or manning one of the Falcon's gun turrets, or being an astromech in an X-Wing.

Shame that it'll never happen though with EA controlling the Star Wars franchise.

The Gamepad is a feasible interface for an MMO, methinks. Raid info, skill bars, etc all on the Gamepad.

For skillbars, you could tap the screen to activate a skill.
You could also map skills on the skillbar to to the A, B, X, Y buttons for quick access.
Or a combination of both.
Raid healing would be easy with tapping boxes to select different party members on the Gamepad.
The Gamepad could also display a list of mobs in your immediate surrounding for quick selection.
And of course, the Gamepad would be ideal for accessing maps, inventory, skill trees, quest logs, etc without obscuring your field of vision on the main screen.

I think using the geomagnetic sensor inside of the GamePad would be cool.

They could make "virtual reality" type games and activities compatible with the Wii remote or other GamePads. The Wii remote would require an extra 3-axis(it only has 6. the GamePad has 9.) attachment, but you would be able to move in free space based on where the GamePad is.

There is a thread in the back that you can screw something into. A stand accessory is likely.
They could create a virtual music game, a cooking game, a sim game, a building blocks game, etc. that are actually tracked accurately, in real time.

I'm sure they'll make use of that feature. I'm not really sure what I would make. I want a game that uses dual Wii remotes.

I guess I would make a flying game that makes use of 2 Wii remotes. It's a real time flight simulator, but you can have dogfights, race, time trial, and it looks like jets that actually exist.
I guess it would be the plane part of Sonic Racing, except more focused on that.
