Why are people using the Wii wheel instead of the gamepad? Physically speaking the difference between the two is going to be miniscule.

It's more comfortable/lighter. I don't find the Gamepad a problem for normal gameplay, but holding it vertically like a wheel would get tiring after awhile - and I'm no slouch physically! Gripping the Wii Wheel is also different from gripping the Gamepad, even if they are the same width.

After a bit of experimentation it looks like I'll just be using the gamepad rather than the motion control. The motion control just doesn't seem responsive enough.

Literally anything but motion control.

Well since I have played the game I played once with the gamepad (using sticks) off TV and once with the pro controller. Pro controller definitely feels better and more natural to use for a racing game.

I have a question for anyone who has the game. Does Mario Kart 8 have motion controls in the Wii Remote+Nunchuk configuration? In MK Wii you could shake the controller to do tricks and raise it to do wheelies. Wheelies are gone, but do the shake tricks return?

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

definitely the wii wheel now.. the gamepad felt way too heavy

the shake tricks are still there but it's harder to do a trick

On Wii you simply had to shake or press the trick button when you were in the air. Now, just like in MK7, you have to time your hop as you go off the edge of a ramp.

Actually outside of Anti-Gravity and changes to items this game is very similar to MK7 in my opinion so far (played about an hour before work).

The rocket start also seems more difficult to do right and not as powerful......

I only tried the pro-controller so far......

I've only played with the GamePad and Wii Wheel. It's MILES better than MKWii. I haven't tried the nunchuck and pro controller yet, but I'm pretty certain I'll just be playing with motion controls.

Wii wheel with out the wheel. I've gotten so good I don't even need it anymore.

Over time, I've actually grown to prefer the dual stick method that's offered on the Gamepad/Pro Controller. Although, I wish you could map the rear view button to somewhere else. X just doesn't work when using the dual stick method.

Ok so I wound up being a couple wii wheels (3rd party, shoulda checked better when I went to buy them but oh well) and I love playing it that way. Took a little time to adjust (especially since I never played mario kart wii) but it feels awesome. By the time I had finished doing time trials on all the immediately available courses it felt just as good as using regular controls.

everything's good and it'll be that way forever!

My first Mario Kart since SMK back in the day. Wii Wheel was great. I had no clue what the hop was for so I'll have to try off the ramps now that I've read that here. Controls were fairly intuitive and I think it's the most accessible/fun racing game ever!

I'm just using the gamepad.

As in motion control gamepad, not the analog.

95% of the time i spent playing MKWii i used the sideways Wiimote, no wheel though, as that hunk of plastic made it feel much worse.

I definitively prefer the motion controls in Mario Kart games now, which is a tad weird, considering I've played more hours of Double Dash than Wii. I just feel like I have more control, and that it's easier to make small adjustments. Might just be that I don't use analogs enough, idk.

A question for anyone that can answer: can I control MK8 using the wiimote + classic controller? The case just shows the classic controller pro, but I'm not very interested in buying that one.

Gamepad with tilt controls, didn't know you could use the gamepad to look behind you. Interesting

So far I think most controls are decent. GamePad is what I use the most for off-TV and the advantages of having the map there but the Pro and WiiMote + Nunchuck are fine to. The best thing about the WiiMote + Nunchuck is that you get the audio feedback in the controller and can have a more relaxed stance. The Pro has neither of those things but it's light and has a ridiculously good battery life. Not sure which is my favourite of those three options, all work well enough and have their own unique positives.

I only played with the Wii Wheel on Mario Kart Wii, I tried it on Mario Kart 8 but it's hard to get into. So basically anything but the Wheel. Oh and the Classic Controller, why would I when I have a Pro controller?

I use the tilt controls on the game pad and I am really impressed with how great it feels. Very responsive and fun. Now I just need to finish the Cups and unlock all the characters and vehicle customizations lol.

If you can use one, you can always use the other. The wii and wii u don't differentiate between the two, since the only difference is the shape.

Oh lol, I thought the classic pro had ZL and ZR buttons and the classic didn't.

With out wheelies and tricks being more difficult to pull off with waggle I am not as big a fan of the wheel as I was on MKWii.

The physics just don't feel as good with motion steering. I may try it some more but I have been playing mainly with the pro controller on the TV or the gamepad for off tv.
