Are there any official numbers out? How many consoles were sent out in the initial allotment?

I was just wondering the same thing. I'm sure NPD group will release some numbers soon. I wonder how accurate Miiverse Community size is for estimating game sales.

you can't go by the size of the miiverse community because you have to realize lots of people here in the states are getting this as a Christmas gift and haven't even opened the box yet

I dont care about europe and japan. Just how many systems were produced for the USA. I am sure they are building up consoles for europe and japan releases now.

Some sources suggest that in the US over 1 million preorders were sold.

Gamestop alone had over 500,000 pre-ordered systems and 1.2 million pre-ordered games. If you start to add up all the retailers I'm sure it was over 1 million for the US launch easy.

I'd guess around 1.5 to 2 million at this point. It'll probably get to 3.6 million by the end of the year, if Nintendo's manufacturing rates are any indication.

I think that might be stretching it. The Wii sold like crazy and only managed ~530k in the first week and got to 3mill globally by the end of 2006. If the Wii U gets to 3.6mill by the end of the year globally it'd be pretty impressive.

They probably have more WiiU's availlable now than they had Wii's bck then. I remember some friends of mine having to wait for months on a list, and they got on that list a month before launch. Nintendo wants a slight shortage I guess, as they did with Wii, but I really do hope they get to 3mill by the end of the year.
