A boost in hardware sales of only 10K on the back of arguably the biggest game release on the Wii-U this year, and one of Nintendo's top franchises, is an abomination. Granted this was only counting the lead up to MK8's release and a couple days of it being available, so next week's numbers will be the true litmus test on whether or not things are going to pick up for the Wii-U over there. If the number drops next week or isn't much more than 20K, thats not a good sign.
Hopefully sales in NA/Europe will increase by a couple hundred thousand over the course of this month though, because nothing else until Smash Bros will give Nintendo a sales boost like this game can.
Eh...Japan has never truly been an accurate measuring stick on sales comparison.
Formally called brewsky before becoming the lovable, adorable Yoshi.

I wouldn't be surprised if consoles are officially niche in Japan pretty soon tbh. Nintendo needs to focus on the West if they want Wii U to succeed. That's why Sony is borderline not even pretending Playstation is Japanese anymore.

In reality it is basically not it has loads more in common with Xbox than Nintendo in the way it is run.
They have gone from intricate custom hardware that only the Japanese have the will power to exploit properly to cheap and nasty off the shelf stuff.

p.s. the sooner you realize that ALL news/media sources are bias and can be equally crappy and mindless, the sooner you will be able to think for yourself

The PS4 is so incredibly western that FF XV and KH3 might be the only big Japanese games it sees for a good while...
I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

It basically all comes down to your expectations, and certainly Wii U consoles aren't flying off the shelves in Japan (yet).
But is Mario Kart the right game to move software for Wii U, and inspire a broad increase in console ownership? Hopefully the software sales are a match for Nintendo's expectations, but we may have to wait until Smash to really ignite the regional fanbase. As much as Kart is a cultural phenomenon here and presumably in Japan as well, Super Smash Bros is an absolute juggernaut even by comparison.
Here's an article I found insightful; while the focus is on the lackluster console sales in the region, Mario Kart 8 was still able to move a respectable quantity of units.
Here’s how Mario Kart 8’s first week compares to the opening week sales of Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7:
we'll see between 2.5 million and 3 million sales within 2 weeks.

Using mad as a comeback is like 2004. That's almost as cancerous as just posting a troll face.
Sorry, I forgot we aren't allowed to dislike anything Nintendo does.

Hahaha you are preaching to the choir! But on this one, I don't have any problem with what Nintendo is doing.
IGN recently posted their Nintendo discussion video talking about this issue, with the one guy who was angry about it being made to look like a fool by his two co-hosts who disagreed. Check it out, they put the concept of the car into perspective quite well.
