Shipped to retailers, and AFAIK not counting eShop downloads. End user statistics from retailers will take longer. Btw, if I read the statistics from the live stock correctly, some retailers in my country got a second shipment of MK8 today.
Picked up my copy today. Will be playing it tonight. I'm very excited.
I went to Walmart and I stood and looked at the game cabinet for a minute the clerk comes up to me and jokingly asks "Mario Kart of Watch Dogs?"
I smiled at her and said "Mario Kart. I'll get Watch Dogs another day.".
"Not surprising. This past week or so it's been either one of those two games. Everything else is just sitting on the shelf."
She then began to tell me that the store had sold over half of it's MK8 stalk since May 30th and that it hardly ever happens at that location for anything. So I thought that was interesting. We didn't get into Wii U units sold, but she told me that they had recently restocked the shelf with the bundles.
The real question isn't how much Mario Kart 8 has sold but have how many units the system has pushed between the Mario kart bundle and what's already out there in stores. The 1.2 million is great but there's like 4-5 million Wii U systems out there. I'm hoping the system is pretty high in the NPD, in any case it should push more units than the Xbone.
Actually it's over 6 million. Problem is its been there for a while. If Kart can't move a million systems by the end of July I'd say it was a failure! Free game and all!
1 Million Mario Kart + 1 Million Smash Bros. + 1 Million Unannounced Biggie + ??? over the year, hitting the target will be easy.
I'm guessing numbers wise its
PS4- 8 million
Wii U- 6 million
Xbone- 4-5 million
I'm guessing Nintendo is banking on the 1 million bump for Mario kart and another one million for smash bros.

My guess is it'll be #1 globally with between 150k and 250k units sold but will quickly drop down to #2 bellow the PS4 soon after. What will be interesting is whether or not they can sustain that sort of push with a good E3.
Between Nintendo being the definitive example for long term games sales and the fact that Wii U has still apparently been doing notably better than last year every week despite the huge gap after DKC, this will help a ton. Not gonna suddenly make Wii U the most popular game console or anything like that, but it helps.
Speaking of Wii U hype and mainstream appeal. Not entirely sure what to think of this.....

Well I'll be, didn't even realize it was covered by the news. Lol I can see this being a positive thing for Nintendo. Wouldn't be surprised if people want to check this out because of it!

It's not number of copies shipped. It's Nintendo's internal estimate of copies actually sold to customers.

19k Wii Us sold isn't that bad given that most weeks it hovers at around 7k and 320k copies of Mario Kart 8 sold is pretty decent. Being second only to the 3DS in Japan isn't really a bad thing.
