Honestly, City Folk is by far my least played Animal Crossing. When I was a kid, I played the original for hours on end, taking breaks for months at a time, and then diving back in if I ran out of stuff to play. I surely played it more than any other GC game (well.. I probably played Melee more, but whatever).

When Wild World came out, I freaked out. The ability to play Animal Crossing on a handheld simply astounded me. It's certainly high up on my most played DS games list (I'm sure the Dragon Quest games and some Pokemon games probably beat it) and, once I played it, I was unsure if I would ever want another Animal Crossing console game. The thing is, I would have my DS with me most of the time - in the car, on vacation, at home - but I had much less time to play my consoles.

When City Folk was released, I was considering it. It looked like fun, as all Animal Crossing games do. But I distinctly recall having a couple games to play when it was released, so I sort of forgot about it. About a year or so passed. I was looking through a bargain bin, when I saw Animal Crossing: City Folk + Wii Speak for 10$! It was a steal, and I had to get it (in this same bargain bin, I found Metroid: Other M WITH a Balance Board charger for some reason for 10$, Trauma Center 2nd Opinion for 5$, Hotel Dusk for 2$, and a lot more... I always look forward to going through it because there are so many awesome deals most of the time, and the games are always new and in perfect condition). So I go home and pop in the disc.

It was fun. But it was also more of the same. Wide World felt a lot fresher, and felt like it added a lot more than City Folk did, not to mention the fact that it was on a HANDHELD. City Folk added... Well, there was the City, which in my opinion really wasn't much. It remains my least played Animal Crossing game. I've already played New Leaf about 35 hours (which isn't much compared to some, but is in the top 10 of my activity log for me) and I believe I couldn't have played City Folk more than 25 or 30.

Animal Crossing is much better suited for a handheld simply due to the nature of the game. My first ever downloaded Retail game was New Leaf, and I haven't looked back since. I've now got it with me wherever I go, so if I ever get bored of some future 3DS release, I can always check on my town in New Leaf. Animal Crossing simply belongs on a handheld (in my opinion). I'm not sure if I'd even consider a Wii U version unless Nintendo really wowed me with a bunch of new features and some excellent graphics.

@bezerker99 - The DS version sold almost three times as much as the Wii version, and was more highly regarded by reviewers in general.

And I've played Wild World probably three times as much as City Folk. Doesn't mean I think it's better...it's just, for a long time, Wild World was all I had to play. And Yes, it took many hours of my life away, lol.

I stopped playing City Folk somewhere around the end of 2010/beginning of 2011. If I had known New Leaf was going to be released halfway thru 2013, I wouldn't have stopped playing CF. Game sales are nice for the developers but doesn't necessarily mean the game is better in terms of overall quality (that is still, a matter of opinion, as with all games). And games sales won't change my opinion that CF just, overall, plays better and smoother than Wild World. :3

Since City Folk didn't turn out too well... Never? I think Nintendo might focus on only handheld Animal Crossing.

Now okay sure, maybe City Folk was not the best game in the series, but do note that Animal Crossing was originally a Home Console game, and a fairly successful one too. I do however feel though, that Animal Crossing feels like more of a handheld game, then a Home Console game. However if Nintendo can offer something on the Wii U, with Animal Crossing that the 3DS can't, then I would love to see.

as far as I'm concerned AC should just stay on handhelds. As @Captain_Balko said the nature of the game just screams handheld. I was a huge fan of the original when I was a kid and would play it for hours, me and a few of my friends would trade the cards that you could scan with the gameboy advance scanner thing and talk about it non stop. Then I didn't play another one until NL, I did play a little bit of CF but hated it so I only played it for maybe like a day or 2. But it's just a perfect game to have with you all the time(i have a digital copy) and play wherever you're at and it's also great for playing in short burst or playing for a few hours. So I think it should just stay on handhelds and that's where Ninty should focus and put their resources for the Wii U elsewhere. I wouldn't be against a Wii U version but IMO it just makes more sense to keep it portable. They would really have to knock me off my feet with some craziness for a Wii U version and somehow justify putting it on a home console.(not that Ninty has to answer to me or anything like that lol)

I'm going to say yes I want it for the wii u, because as much as its great to have animal crossing as a handheld so you can have it at all times. Animal crossing is a beautiful game and on all the consoles it's been on, it's graphics haven't been showed off. Just like Zelda the wind waker, the only reason nintendo is releasing it again is because it didn't look as great on the GameCube. City folks ultimate downfall was the controls, but now we have the wii u gamepad which we can have our inventory, map, ect on the smaller screen and the beautiful village on our high resolution television, instead of having it on one screen. The wii u is way better than I anticipated and I'm sure they can add new features so you can play with your family (since of course it's a family console).

For the most part, Animal Crossing games have been released 3-4 years apart so I'd put it at early 2017. I can certainly see how they could make improvements on a Wii U version, but I'm not just not sure I'd be willing to play on a console after playing New Leaf. New Leaf was my first Animal Crossing game, and I'd been put off by the previous titles after playing NL. (My sister owns them.) The original seems primitive and limited, Wild World isn't very pleasing to the eyes, and City Folk just feels... Generic for the series. New Leaf is just full of features, but I'm sure Nintendo will do great with a Wii U version!

Don't you guys think its weird That Animal Crossing Plaza is expiring in 2014, doesn't it kinda give the hint that Animal Crossing may or may not come to the U. I wouldn't put up the assumption that it sucks based on City Folk, but Nintendo is capable of a lot of things and if they add a big feature that expands off of New Leaf it could probably be a hit.

Why would they close it right before releasing the next game?

City Folk wasn't that bad. The price was ridiculous and I didn't grab a copy at the $110AU RRP when Mario Kart Wii was selling for $79AU. I was very skeptical about the idea of the game and not at all interested. Then a year after it came out I found it in a bargain bin with Wii Speak for $20AU. Ended up being the most played game on my Wii.

The fact is the Wii U allows you to play on the GamePad and has all of that online infrastructure there from the start. Imagine having MiiVerse integrated into Animal Crossing itself! Or having global competitions for bug catching and fishing. Clothing designs in your clothes shops as voted for by MiiVerse and/or from your friends town swapped around on a daily basis. It could be a fantastic game.

To be honest, I'm not sure an Animal Crossing Wii U will ever happen. As people said, the series just generally works better on a handheld. And hey, Miiverse integration can be done perfectly well on the 3DS, at least when they bother to update to add it in (they said they've been working on something like this as a 3DS feature for a while).
