Topic: How easy is it to transfer stuff from Wii to Wii U?

Ok so I have been thinking about this alot lately and I think it's time that I transfer my stuff from my Wii to the Wii U. One thing though that has kept me from doing this is I am kinda afraid I will mess up the transfer and lose all of my stuff on the Wii mainly alot of my VC games. So I was wondering what steps is there to do this? Do I need a certain SD card to do the transfer? What if I have duplicate items on my Wii and Wii U (For example the same VC games?) Do Miis on the Wii transfer over to the Wii U as well? What about games that are no longer on the VC service? Anything else that I need to know before I do this?

Well...
All you need is an SD card with at least 512MB free and a stable internet connection. Go on the Wii Shop (NOT the eShop) on both consoles and download the data transfer channels (one is for Wii and one for Wii U). Open the system transfer channel on the Wii and watch the best "please wait" screen mankind has ever seen.
When it's done, take the SD card out if the Wii into the Wii U and run the app. Nothing else to do.
All your games, including the ones that have been taken down from the Shop, will be transferred. As for me, the only data that couldn't be transferred were the Metroid Prime 3 demo videos and homebrew stuff (obviously).
If you bought VC games from the Wii Shop on Wii U I guess they will be overwritten by the ones from your Wii (you were talking about "duplicates" anyway). If you bought them on the eShop, then you have nothing to worry about.
The Miis on the Mii Channel will be transferred to your Wii U's Wii mode, so you'll have to import them from the Mii Maker in Wii U mode if you want to use them on Wii U games.

The more games you have the more of a pain it is.
My transfer is still buggy, cannot transfer LostWinds, even with the update on both Wii and Wii U.
ToriBash is still on my Wii, along with 5 selected demos that somehow couldn't transfer like the rest of the games and demos.
And yeah, Yoshi's Cookie (VC/NES) was completely removed. From both systems. No redownload on either system!

I hate that each transfer overwrites game save data. Wish for a option to select what you want to transfer.

I was just going to note that it can take a looong time if you have a full Wii, but I remember SKTTR had some issues, yeah. I wouldn't be too paranoid, but if you've got games that aren't in either shop you might want to keep your Wii around. Conversely this transfer system is the only legit way to copy your save data for games with online components. Most people won't have any issues at all.

It was easy. It was straightforward and simple. All you need is common sense and patience. Play your 3DS whilst it is running, for it took me around an hour for the transfer to complete. The Pikmin show was satisfying, though.

I did a Wii to Wii U transfer a few months ago and it was a slow but fairly smooth process.
The only annoying thing was that games on the Wii's SD card did not transfer. I had a lot of games on the SD card because my 5 WiiWare and 44 VC games easily exceeded the Wii's storage capacity. The games that were on the Wii's internal memory were transferred ok but I had to redownload the games that were on the SD card.

That was also my issue and made it slower because at first I thought it would just copy everything off the card. So I moved all channels off the Wii memory onto the card, then started the process and realised it was going to format the card and copy everything itself so I had to prioritise stuff and load up the Wii and manually download the rest instead. Took a couple of hours if I remember correctly and then Nintendo Land download had to be kicked off overnight. Needless to say the unboxing was less than exciting for me and my daughter given we didn't get to use it until the following day.

Lesson learned and with the Wii U my partner got for her kids we had everything, including Wii Transfer complete by Christmas so the kids could just play.

Do the transfer only handle the games/saves? I want to keep netflix on my Wii.

I'm pretty sure apps like that are ignored. Besides Netflix is a free-to-download app so I doubt there'd be anything to stop you downloading it again even after the transfer.

Isn't there a Netflix app on the Wii U - why aren't you using that?

Thanks. I do use the Netflix app on the WiiU. But the Wii is now in the bedroom and mainly used for Netflix.
