Topic: how does Nintendo decide between 3DS and WiiU?

How does Nintendo decide what games are going to which platform? We have Kirby:TD and Mario Golf both coming to the 3DS this May. Why not make one of them for the WiiU? Honestly I'd be more excited about these titles if they were WiiU exclusives. Is it decided based off install base? I dont think so really. Sales numbers of the two systems were not determined when these titles went into production. Is it less time consuming/ difficult to make 3DS games? I'm not really sure. It just seems so lopsided between the two. What do you guys think?

The only 3DS games I would like to see on the Wii U would be Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon..........just for the fact that both titles had console grade AAA production values and they also have the depth to make the cross over.

the 3DS players waited far to long for a single NEW Kirby game and Mario golf seems to be made to fit a handheld, I mean, made to play in shorter sessions and with less "enjoy with your family" focus

Of course it is. Its cheaper too.

Why do you think things are lopsided when the 3DS was released before the Wii U? It had a bad launch and Nintendo shifted a lot of its resources to the 3DS at the time. They're currently doing that with the Wii U now and they have a lot of games lineup for 2014.

Four more months until Bayonetta 2.

Kirby games have always sold better on the handhelds and 3DS had yet to receive one. Besides even if Nintendo wants to focus on Wii U this year they still need to produce titles for 3DS to prevent hardware sales from dropping.

Because HD games are harder to develop for and the 3DS launched quite a bit earlier. The vast majority of the games we're getting now would be games that started development before the Wii U launched. It looks as drastic as it is because of that, it looked worse when the 3DS was starting to hit it's stride right in the middle of the Wii U's "post-launch blues" period.

Also I'm personally looking at this from a "games skywake is actually kinda interested in" lens. So to me I see Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros, DK:TF, Bayonetta 2 and X vs Layton/Wright and Yoshi's New Island. So I don't know what you're talking about.

The notion that Nintendo should not focus on the 3DS is ridiculous. The 3DS software sales are what allow Nintendo to make money despite the Wii U. Hence it actually makes more business to continue supporting the product that is succeeding. Now that is not saying that Nintendo should abandon the Wii U. I think it makes more sense to focus more on the 3DS while allowing some studios to develop heavy-hitters on the Wii U.

1 thing is that Nintendo develops games for 3DS that work better in short bursts. Then they develop games for Wii U that will require longer play times. The longer the game the more dev time it takes to make, kinda the reason you don't see too many launch RPGs.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I remember the E3 before the 3DS when "Wii HD" was still heavily rumoured to be on the horizon. They outlined the games heading for the Wii. I couldn't help but sit back and think that I'd rather these games on anything but the Wii. Skyward Sword I thought was great as a last big game for the Wii but by that stage I really wanted to see those big games in HD. DKCR I loved the look of but the fact that they played with the background so much made me think it was a better fit for 3DS.

That's just how it is.

When 3DS games like Mirrors of Fate have a small team's of dev's 5 to be exact, towards the Wii U games what use team's of 85+ it's obvious you'll get more 3DS game's. Not only that Nintendo has been hit with HD development and are now understaffed when it comes to Wii U games, not long ago thay where pulling dev's off other projects to help finish other games. But now thay are looking to do something about it by bring in other dev's, that's why games have been delayed and the reason your seeing these droughts coupled with lack of 3rd party support.

When they want a game to sell, they put it on the 3DS. When they want a game to fail, they throw it on the Wii U.

due to screen size and the idea of it being something you can use on a journey, hand held games tend to be experiences you can chop up into 10-30 minute sessions, Console games are designed for longer play times. This is why Layton, Phoenix Wright, and Pokémon are better off on the 3ds and more than like won't transport to the Wii U. If you look at Spirit Tracks or The Phantom Hourglass, they are designed so you can do bite sized bits as opposed to the longer Wind Waker. Horses for courses and all that.

Kirby and Mario Golf games aren't usually games that are put out near the beginning of a consoles lifespan if it is suffering. We're only now getting them because the 3DS already has a Zelda game, a few Mario games, etc. The Wii U will likely see a Mario Party game and a Zelda game before a Mario Golf one.

It wasn't a terrible idea, it was just a terribly made game. The Wii had plenty of Mario Party games, its not like the Wii U having one would have contributed significantly to sales.

So Pikmin 3 and SM3DW are failed games? Pfft.

I think it's based on graphics. If they think this game could benefit better from 3DS's 3D effects, then they'll go with 3DS. If they think the game would look better with Wii U's HD visuals, then they go with Wii U. That, and also the content. If the game has crazy stuff goin on all over the place like Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, or Hyrule Warriors, then Wii U would be the better fit because it would be easier to process all this than on 3DS.
